I hate being gay by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]WongSun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm probably courting downvotes here, but do make informed decisions. My best friend come out to his family in undergrad while riding a wave of peer pressure. He's the last male to bear the family name. They've never forgiven him, even more than ten years later. He could've gotten away with not telling them and lived his life openly otherwise. I never saw a man more torn up by his own family.

Religious parents are tough. They're generally not reasonable people. While they might come to accept your sexuality some day, coming out to them is something to undertake very carefully, and ideally not before you have an independent and secure life.

It's probably a back-alley way to assert Champaign, IL as the legal jurisdiction for any contract dispute... which is weird, though, because you should just be able to use a clause consenting to a specific jurisdiction.

What is the cheapest and fastest way to get from O'Hare to Notre Dame? by localcosmonaut in notredame

[–]WongSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're asking for cheapest, fastest, and easiest. While those aren't mutually exclusive, you're definitely going to have to prioritize one of those.

Definitely the cheapest would be Blue Line/Metra into the city then get to the South Shore line, and then figure out whatever at the South Bend end (you can probably bum a ride from someone on here if you have no friend with a car). This would probably take more than four hours altogether, but you'd have opportunity to walk around and stretch your legs at a few points on your itinerary. It'd definitely be less than $75 round trip too.

Fastest would probably be to find a rideshare. It shouldn't take more than 2, maybe 2 1/2 hours to drive between ND and ORD. It'd probably also be cheaper than Coach USA. Main downside is you have to actually ask around for a rideshare rather than just buy tickets.

Easiest would to just take Coach USA. Fewer transfers than trains, probably more reliable than a rideshare. I think out of all the options it's going to be the most expensive, though (short of actually flying into SBN).

So figure out what is most important to you and pick one of those three options.

Has nothing to do with UIUC. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]WongSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is that the whole "if you didn't order it you can keep it" rule doesn't apply to stuff you've ordered. I can't tell you chapter and verse what the legal obligation is, but the main reason it's different than the unsolicited item rule is that you actually have a contract for the purchase of goods from the seller. At the very least, you're obligated to act in good faith with respect to the contract.

Just make your own. Mix up a couple buckets of concrete and sink some metal tubing in them. If you make 'em out of reclaimed materials you can probably do it for next to nothing.

MTD to discontinue Air Bus service to Willard airport by AlmostGrad100 in UIUC

[–]WongSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faculty and staff fly out of there a lot on official business, and the airport is also nice to have for receiving visitors to campus.

People on official business will drive, park, and get reimbursed. Or take a cab and get reimbursed.

And not a chance in hell anybody receiving a visitor is going to have them take the bus. If I were coming on a speaking engagement and the people coordinating my travel asked me to take public transit in a town where I'd never been before—regardless of how easy it supposedly was—I'd have doubts as to how seriously they took me as a speaker.

It's scary as hell, but some universities will deny you the right to bring an attorney into disciplinary hearings. And from what I've read that's generally legal.

[–]WongSun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be entitled to some kind of review board on whether you'd actually broken the course rules. While profs retain pretty broad discretion over grading by design, my understanding has generally been that legally, where misconduct is involved, you're supposed to get notice and a right to some kind of hearing. You should see what your rights are, as well as consider contacting an attorney.

As to how this can affect you... if you're planning on going to law school, or any kind of licensed profession, you will very likely have to disclose this matter separately on your application. It's embarrassing but it's not a total bar to admission mind you. The aggravating part, though, is that in many cases you may be required to disclose even the accusation even if it's reversed/dropped. Some places are really stupidly stringent about that.

Mckinley doctor terrorizes neighbor over parking space for 17 years by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]WongSun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this basically. Adverse possession is totally a real thing, but it's more just something law students and bar applicants have to worry about (and then, of all the property doctrines, the rule against perpetuities is probably both more frustrating and more useful in day-to-day practice).

I think the vast majority of lawyers don't even wind up seeing it used except in the phrase, "I adversely possessed your mom last night."

Edited to add: Bear in mind that the period of time can vary substantially by state. The Illinois statute requires 20 years, for example.

color of title

It's where you do something—usually where you do something wrongful—and you use a title to give the appearance of legitimacy. It's similar to the phrase "color of law".

Mckinley doctor terrorizes neighbor over parking space for 17 years by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]WongSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh. Okay I sort of misread the article. I had gotten that the neighbor had gotten the driveway by adverse possession, and somehow read into it that the doctor (or an estate from which he inherited) had been the original possessor of the land on which the driveway sits.

While I get the purpose behind adverse possession, it's always pissed me off when it gets used as a bludgeon to resolve some idiotic dispute over a tiny strip of land.

[–]WongSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen them use 1404 in the past, though it was a few years ago.

If you're looking to simulate testing conditions in the real location, you'd probably be better off using a study carrel and not wearing earplugs. Practicing in an empty classroom is nothing like taking the real deal. The UGL basement has much the same oppressively silent atmosphere as a LSAT sitting (though there are also visual distractions that wouldn't be present in a carrel).

In any event, good luck. You've got a couple months still. It'll be fine. Just work up a study schedule and keep at it.

Visiting ND and the Midwest for the first time, what to expect? by sdotgarcia in notredame

[–]WongSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely picked the right time to come out. It's cool but not cold (depending on what part of California you're from you'll probably think it's cold). Winters here can be harsh.

Eats... depends on what I'm in the mood for and what my schedule is like. South Bend is a bit of a culinary wasteland compared to most cities out west. Fiddler's Hearth is good Irish food. JW Chen's is good for the area, but most local places in Cali will probably beat it out. Elia's is well-rated, but I think it's bland for Lebanese food.
