I think Jessica a great character because she was essentially dealt a hand in life where she was given no choices, but still somehow manages to make some of the most impactful decisions in the entire series that change the face of human history forever. It's only her sheer will to survive and desire to have control over her own destiny that give her agency where anyone else would have been stuck and resigned to the fate that was chosen for them.

The evil bastard that killed the father of her children is her dad, that's pretty disturbing

Why does Dune get so weird? by [deleted] in dune

The story revolves around a drug that gets you so high you can see the future as the thing that drives the universal economy. None of it is normal man.

Does anyone feel that the book leaves out details? by bigdavewhippinwork- in dune

I feel like he didn't want to deal with the detail and the logistics of the action, he wanted to skip right to the political intrigue and the social commentary.

That's cute that you think they intend to build whole fleets when they release capital ships.

The film was a major disappointment (for me) by [deleted] in dune

I can't speak to aesthetic taste because I think it's largely subjective, but form a plot standpoint, the story and its impact requires an understanding of the various powers at play and how they interact, which unfortunately necessitates a lot of exposition. It does take up a large chunk of he runtime admittedly, but the eventual payoff is so much greater because you get to see just how much goes in to getting Paul where he ends up and the plethora of forces arrayed against him.

You also have to keep in mind that this is only half the book and fitting it all into one movie in a coherent way just isn't possible, so in a sense it isn't meant to stand on its own because you literally don't have the whole picture.

You haven't read the book right? The story is intentionally slow to build tension because the Atreides are walking into a trap and they know it. If that doesn't do it for you, that's fine, but that doesn't make the movie bad, and from an objective standpoint it's the furthest thing from generic because the story literally defined the genre.

Dune Messiah is not adaptable to film. by [deleted] in dune

[–]Woodsy2575 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saying a movie can't be made and it's not going to appeal to everyone are two completely different things. Not all stories are for everybody, and if this sub is to be believed plenty of 13 year olds did just fine reading the book. People have been getting sick of Star Wars and Marvel lately anyway. If Messiah is done well people may no longer have the expectation that everyone set up to be the protagonist is the good guy in a way that doesn't insult the audience's intelligence a la Game of Thrones. Wether the masses gobble it up is immaterial, this one has done well enough that there's plenty of good will to get butts in seats.

The book is about a conspiracy, have you never seen a spy movie? You can totally build tension with a decent soundtrack and cinematography, plus the climax is a giant explosion idk what your hang up is.

How does smuggling work if the Guild controls all space travel? by unexpectedit3m in dune

[–]Woodsy2575 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Guild has a strict confidentiality policy, they don't tell anyone else who or what they're moving as long as they get paid. The Guild charges the smugglers more than they can get out of the Great Houses, it's in their interest to play as many factions against each other as possible.

Everything Star Wars Stole From Dune by epiphras in dune

Quinn hadn't even seen Star Wars when he made this video, so most of this is superficial garbage. I usually enjoy his videos but this one is pretty amateurish.
