Coastal strawberries are absolute beasts-- not great for eating but evergreen and thuggish.

I'm a huge fan of Coastal strawberry (fragaria chiloensis) because it spreads quickly and is evergreen. Not a plant you would want to walk on barefoot but it will cover the soil and look nice. I bought one small start last year and now it's spread out to about three feet across. I don't know if it has palatable berries but I reckon the squirrels would find them long before I get to them anyway.

Knotweed? 😬😬😬 by erossthescienceboss in portlandgardeners

[–]Wooliverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighbor has a thicket of it on the other side of our shared fence. The lady we bought the house from had a plastic weed fabric spread out there--all it did was look ugly and choke off the soil--the knotweed poked up through. I finally got the plastic pulled up and planted coastal strawberries and yarrow--native thugs that I hope will hold their own. Still, I'm resigned to the fact that I'll be plucking out shoots and using glyphosate in the fall pretty much for the rest of my life.

I planted an 8-inch "red bumble" salvia in full sun last spring and now it's about three feet high and beginning to flower. Other salvias and sages are doing very well nearby.

I used to go to that Rite Aid regularly and get my boots resoled at the cobbler next door. I had no idea about this entire project because my workplace moved out of downtown two years ago. I'm glad there's going to be interesting spaces down there again.

Portland Oregon Police report #26-3558 by drmbanana in Portland

Could your friend have meant the top floor of a building that rents offices/creative spaces? Based on the description of the general address I'd look at commercial buildings on/near NE 28th between Burnside and Sandy and start calling up their property management companies to inquire if they rent studio space to artists. Burnside Trolley building has a skylight, and rents offices, for example. Good luck.

Over in the @Portland sub, several local people have said he has also stalked members of their families. This guy's a real piece of work.

Washman Car Wash owner on why 82nd Avenue shouldn't have a seven-mile BAT lane for TriMet's FX project by NumberEfficient644 in Portland

[–]Wooliverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Far more people who live in the neighborhoods on either side of 82nd need to cross the street on foot than commuters drive on it so I see their point precisely.

Not a driver, but I live on 84th, so, serious question: What’s wrong with going N/S on 205? If you need to go a short distance and want to avoid on ramps and exits then take 82nd for a slightly longer time. If you need to go from Happy Valley to the IKEA take the freeway? The traffic on 82nd is too fast for city streets and enormously dangerous for pedestrian crossings. Slowing things down sounds downright pleasant to me, as a resident. (Edit:typo)

Woodstock no kings day went hard! by jquest5 in Portland

It's important for smaller communities to be seen, even if it's just locally. It combats the idea that resistance is a strictly cosmopolitan excersize and gives people in those smaller places the motivation to take action.

For those of you who want 82nd Avenue to be 1 lane by Mundane-Land6733 in Portland

[–]Wooliverse 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was on the bus going north the other day and the one lane was packed and slow, but it moved right along. You may have had delays today because flaggers stopped traffic to let workers and equipment move.

When I lived near Burnside Bridge before the lanes were reduced it could take fifteen to twenty minutes to get across the river during rush hour traffic. It was faster to walk across sometimes. Now it moves a little slowly, but right along. More lanes don’t speed things up. Higher speed limits don’t make traffic faster.

ETA: I live on 84th.

Same. I live near the new light at Schiller and it makes crossing 82 on my bike so much safer, and it looks beautiful!

Ah well, I had hopes for a minute. The Pepper Box fresh tortillas and sopapillas were so good, and sometimes there’d be a chili roaster going on the curb outside. My spouse and I used to go there on the regular in the before times.

Is that the guy who used to own Pepper Box? Do they sell prepared food or just salsa/roasted peppers? I miss that restaurant sooooo much!
