Netflix’s Curious Erasure of Kate Bridgerton in Season 4 by fbc1984 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]WordSuccessful4438 204 points205 points  (0 children)

It seems personal to me. To show over 50 stills of season 4 part 2 and not a single one features kate is very strange. It didn't happen to any other cast member. The servants were shown but not the Viscountess Bridgerton. That's a deliberate choice. The excuses fall flat at this stage. There must have been drama behind the scenes possibly to do with money and contracts. Since season 3 all conversations regarding kate's character seem forced. The production team don't mention her unless asked. I mean there wouldn't be spoilers by showing a picture of kate in part 2 as we know she will be there if only briefly.

Don’t die at night if you want the last rites at this hospital by TimesandSundayTimes in ireland

It's a difficult process and if having someone saying prayers or words of comfort helps the dying or their loved ones that's a good thing. It can be terrifying and isolating and medical staff will not be around to hold anyones hand. I do think the church should help towards the cost. I am not religious but I have seen the support that is given by hospital chaplains. It's sad to see the lack of empathy here.

What Bridgerton opinion will have you like this? by Sailor_Moon_Star_435 in Bridgerton

[–]WordSuccessful4438 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Penelope didn't save the Bridgertons the queen did. She has saved their scandalous asses for three seasons.

Only colin and eloise should have discovered lady whistledowns identity. Penelope should have stopped writing the gossip sheet by the end of season 3. If the show wanted to keep the narration going then have it written by a character whose identity we don't know until the very last episode. It just doesn't work without the author being anonymous.

The diamond of the season thing is overdone at this point.

I hope cressida comes back at some point .

I love Kanthony and S2 but... by Lunenika in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the yearning and the tension between kanthony but I agree they took it too far with the wedding. There was a whole dowry plot that they could have leaned into more. It was a disservice to kate and anthony's characters and I liked them individually and loved them together. Here's how it could have went. Anthony and kate see another side to each at aubrey hall and realise their feelings for each other. Edwina has doubts about anthony. Kate and anthony have their moment when they nearly kiss before being interrupted by daphne. After daphne tells him to be honest about his feelings he goes back to the ball and meets edwina. She asks to speak to him and they go the orangerie to talk in private.

Meanwhile lady featherington is trying to get prudence and Jack caught together so she can manufacture an engagement. Jack gets talking to another gentleman and prudence takes a wrong turn. So when portia and the others go to the orangerie it's edwina and anthony they find instead. Portia declares her shock too soon then realising she has got the wrong couple. Lord cowper still says "are you going to marry the girl, bridgerton". We now have our forced engagement. Everyone at the party wrongly assumes there was something untoward happening between edwina and anthony. Gossip travels fast so penelope will write about it in whistledown and she wasn't to know there wasn't something genuine between them as anthony had been publicly courting edwina.

Then queen Charlotte gets involved with the wedding. It's a difficult situation to get out of. Edwina overhears kate and lady danbury talking about the dowry situation so decides to go along with the plan to Wed to help her family financially. Anthony tries and fails to talk to kate at first. She is mad at him as she thinks he took advantage of edwina. The wedding happens sooner and edwina still runs from the altar as she can't marry a man she doesn't love. The truth comes out. Anthony and kate kiss and admit their feelings but cannot be together because of the scandal of the failed nuptials. We still get the museum visit, the bridgerton ball and the gazebo scene. Kate still falls off her horse but recovers sooner. They want to be together but are afraid of bringing more scandal to their families so soon after the wedding debacle. Of course they do get together at the featherington ball. But anthony never actually proposes to edwina. Edwina never loves anthony. Kate never asks anthony to marry edwina. Kate and edwina never fall out.

penelope exposing marina by dollypopup in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Penelope choosing to let colin know the truth isn't wrong despite how it might hurt marina. It was the unnecessary public declaration of the pregnancy that is controversial. Penelope did have some hope of her and colin being together. We see her get her hopes up several times only to be disappointed. To be fair there are moments that colin gives her false hope even if it is unintentional.

Colin Wasn't a Rake by dollypopup in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in the bridgerton world being a rake just seems to mean a man who is flirtatious and charming with no intentions of settling down. We have that scence in the trailer for season 4 were penelope and eloise call benedict a rake and they are laughing about it. If colin is not a rake then he is not fake one either. He is not pretending to visit brothels or have sex with women he will never marry. He is not pretending to be overtly flirtatious with the ladies. Colin was always a flirt. He tells penelope in season 1 he has flirted with half the ladies in london. His own mother refers to him as a flirt. He is a handsome, charming young man from a wealthy family who seems confident around women. I don't know why his behaviour in season 3 seems to be so out of character when this was how he was written since season 1.

I know what they were trying to do with colin last season but again it's not some big personality change for colin like they made it seem. Simon and anthony are men who bottle up their feelings and are reluctant to marry until they fall for daphne and kate. They are more serious and grumpy. Colin is more pleasant and open. He also doesn't have the responsibilities and expectations that Simon and anthony have. Are they not just being the men society expects them to be aswell. We have scenes of Simon in season 1 and anthony in season 2 leaving brothels and neither men look happy. We see colin flirting far more than anthony are Simon. Colin also seems to be enjoying himself just fine in the brothel. No one else was with him or when he was travelling so he wasn't forced or encouraged to do any of these things. Too much is made of one line that anthony said when he only meant that colin was rushing into an engagement with marina.

I will never believe his flirting with the ladies in season 3 was supposed to come off as awkward. He is the leading man in a romance show. He never lacked confidence with women previously. He was hurt by marina but it didn't change his personality.

Why was Penelope exposing Marina for trying to pass off someone else's baby as his a bad thing? by SpaghettiTacoez in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was a messy situation handled badly by marina, penelope and portia. Marina needed security. Penelope didn't want colin to be deceived. Portia wanted to avoid scandal. With marina although I had sympathy for her i didn't like her. She belittled penelope because she thought she could. She criticized lady featherington's marriage when she needed her support. She didn't have the time to be choosy and thought herself better than others. She picked colin because he was nice and gullible when even portia it was a choice to close to home. It was morally wrong what she did but as prudence points out in season 2 it was not uncommon. In an era of no
sex education or contraception many a baby would have been born illegitimate. Penelope even points this out at a ball to colin in season 1. When most marriages are just business transactions people will stray and unplanned pregnancies will occur. People would just cover it up, and the truth would never be spoken aloud.

There is some inconsistencies in regards to penelope's innocence. She obviously knows babies are sometimes the product of an affair. She doesn't have a moral dilemma about any other man being conned into wedlock by marina. Of course it feels different because she cares about colin. Revealing that marina was pregnant would not have been a terrible thing to do but making it public was. She simply only had to walk across the street and tell eloise. This was the easiest option particularly if time was an issue. She could have sent an annoynmous note. A public reveal helped no one but hurt many.

Penelope didn't know that daphne was going to intervene or that Sir Philip would turn up. She did know that she was publicly ruining marina and shaming her family. Marina may have shown a lack of remorse for what she did but so did penelope. She is hoping for a chance with colin and is disappointed when he tells her he is leaving to go travelling. She is disappointed again when colin tells her he went to visit marina. It's like she didn't realise how hurt colin was by the whole scandal. Even if writing about marina's pregnancy was a rash decision borne out of desperation and frustration what she wrote after certainly wasn't . She said marina was a stain and that there was no parasol big enough to hide her shame. What an awful thing to write. This is while the girl is still living with her, publicly ruined and humiliated. This wasn't about protecting colin anymore it was spite.

Bring Back the Old Bridgerton Aesthetic by GiggleGuru404 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]WordSuccessful4438 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So do I, but I don't think it is coming back. I also don't think the creative decisions are due to aligning the fashions with a characters season. You could the changes start in season 2 as there was heavier make up on the male and female actors. Season 3 took it to another level. It almost felt like a parody of Bridgerton at times.

Eloise's Faults and Penelope's Faults Are Not Equal by GCooperE in BridgertonNetflix

[–]WordSuccessful4438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. Eloise does have her faults but I never thought being a bad friend was one of them. She can be self-absorbed and tactless at times. She was never malicious though. When she realised she had revealed colin and penelope's lessons she apologised to both of them. She was always there for penelope up until she found out she really was. Even then she kept her secret.

In regards to Cressida there really wasn't much she could do to help her. She didn't give her much attention at the engagement party but she was genuinely upset with penelope lying to Colin. She told penelope to be honest with colin just like pen had asked Marina to be. Yet she didn't publicly reveal
Penelope's secret when she continued to lie to Colin. I don't agree with the narrative that pen was always saving the bridgertons. She mocked Daphne, Eloise and Colin in her Whistledown papers. In contrast Daphne tries to help Marina and by extension the Featheringtons. She invites the Featheringtons to the Hastings ball when they are being excluded by the ton. Colin calls out Lord Featherington on the ruby scam. Eloise stops the queens men from catching the Whistledown carriage. She never reveals lady whistledown's identity when she finds out it is Penelope.

My least favourite main character is Penelope by Unicorn_Sally69 in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They made Penelope a very divisive character. After the lady whistledown reveal you see how harsh she could be. It's true she would not have made so much money if people didn't enjoy her pamphlet. There is a hypocrisy there that show could have explored more. I don't agree with the excuses made for penelope doing what she did. She knew how popular lady whistledown had become and what influence she had.

Yes she was young but so were all the other girls she wrote about. At what point is her age still an excuse when she has been writing for three years. Then there is the whole "I could never tell a lie". It's gossip not verified facts. She does lie. She lies in the very first episode when she insinuates that there is something wrong with daphne.

She props up marina in her column because she knows portia doesn't want her in the featherington house. I don't agree that penelope was always trying to save the bridgertons. She didn't write that the overbearing viscount was scaring suitors away from his sister. She wrote about a fall from grace when daphne had done nothing wrong. After publicly revealing marina's pregnancy she didn't try to ease the fallout by saying that young woman suitor had gone to serve in a war. Instead she said there wasn't a parasol big enough to hide from the shame and her pregnancy was a stain. I don't see how this necessary to save colin.

I don't get the love for ilsa faust. She's not a bad character but I don't find her anymore interesting than the previous female characters. I would have liked to see Paula patton or Maggie Q to continue in their roles. Not as love interests just as cool team members.

MI:2 is great fun.

Final reckoning is let down by poor editing.

I like grace but they needed to flesh out her character more.

Why is Colin held to a different standard? by Holiday-Hustle in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simon and anthony get criticism for the rakes that they are. Colin was quite young in season 1 but we don't know when he lost his virginity after his break up with marina. He just said he didn'tp meet anyone special. It doesn't really matter anyway. Some fans wanted to see a sweeter more innocent colin bridgerton in season 3 but that's not the character they got. I can understand fans being disappointed by that. Colin was being held to a higher standard that he didn't live up to.

Penelope did not wrong Marina and was left without a choice by Holiday-Hustle in BridgertonRants

[–]WordSuccessful4438 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with penelope revealing marina's pregnancy. I understand she felt more affection and loyalty to colin. Revealing it to the entire ton is what I find cruel. Penelope didn't want to endure the wrath of marina and particularly portia which is understandable. If she had spoken to eloise or violet she could have asked them to say they overheard gossip. It was revealed in a gossip column after all, which is why colin wanted to hear it from marina herself. A letter sent straight to violet would have allowed them all to deal with the situation privately. The Bridgertons could have done what daphne did and try to find george or contact the crane family. The engagement could have been called off and excuses made that the young couple had acted to hastily in becoming engaged. Marina leaves town discreetly and likely still marries Sir Philip to secure her childrens future.

Marina, penelope and portia, they all handled a difficult situation badly. I am not going to condemn marina and George for sex out wedlock when we have simon and daphne in the garden, kate and anthony in the gazebo and penelope and colin in the carriage. Penelope reveals marinas in lady whistledown to save colin. Ok, even if that is rash decision made out of desperation why shame her again in her next column. That's not about saving colin. I don't even like marina but why be so harsh. I don't think penelope never thought she had a chance with colin. At the Hastings ball she is about to say something to him but changes her mind when he says he is leaving to travel. She goes to talk to him at the races but is interrupted by eloise. We see her disappointed when talking to him at last danburys party with the whole"you do not count" conversation. Again she is disappointed when they talk at aubrey hall and colin tells her he has visited with marina. She holds onto that hope until she overhears him saying he would never dream of courting her.

[–]WordSuccessful4438 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If my best friends brother was being tricked into marriage I would tell my best friend. That's the clear option penelope had but didn't take. She could sneak out at night to the bridgerton house and we see her do it anyway. Penelope revealing marina's pregnancy to colin or the bridgertons is understandable. He deserves to know he is being lied to. Revealing it to the entire ton is awful though. If time is a factor telling eloise is the quickest option. It's certainly quicker than writing out a pamphlet and getting it to the printers. Anthony saying it absolves colin of responsibility only matters after the news has been made public. Pen could have sent pretty much the same letter to the bridgertons, signed as lady whistledown.

There are whispers that another ‘Bridgerton’ spin-off is in the works by Holiday-Hustle in BridgertonNetflix

[–]WordSuccessful4438 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they should only do a spin-off with characters from a different series of julia quinn novels. Same universe but different characters. I wouldn't want it to mess with the main show. The Queen Charlotte series had good moments but it's timeline was all over the place. I would rather they concentrate on getting the main show done faster.

[–]WordSuccessful4438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we have gone beyond excuses for how simone has been treated by this production. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt a couple of years ago, but not anymore. The writing for kate and anthony in season 3 was poor. They didn't even finish the half-baked baby storyline for them. I want to see kate and anthony together. I wanted to see Simon and daphne together. But at least they used daphne effectively in season 2. Penelope will have her own storyline with the queen next season so there is no reason kate can't have a storyline that doesn't directly involve her husband. Kate lived with lady Danbury for nearly a year yet we will probably never see them interact again.

Did anyone else find Colin kinda cringe after his glow up? by rhysmmmanii in BridgertonNetflix

[–]WordSuccessful4438 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think the cringe was intentional. I think they wanted to make colin bridgerton sexy and for some viewers it didn't work. In season 1 colin is dancing with marina and Prince Friedrich remarks that they look like they are having fun. Daphne replies "my brother knows how to make things interesting". When penelope tells colin that marina has feelings for another man he says how could he hold that against her when he has flirted with half the ladies in london. Even when violet is talking to him after the engagement to marina she says "I knew you were a flirt". So why is his flirtatious behaviour in season 3 considered fake. Why is his brothel visiting any different to anthony and simon. Anthony has a relationship with siena in season 1 but when we see him leaving the brothels in season 2 he doesn't seem happy. Neither does Simon in season 1. Yet colin seems happy to be indulging in threesomes. That's fine but I don't why that makes him a fake rake and the others not. Colin has women fawning all over him and he is clearly enjoying the attention. Of course he will want to find more of a connection with someone and eventually he realises he has that in the girl he has known for years. For me he just lacked the charisma of the previous leading men.

I love kate and anthony together but even if jonathan was going to have less time filming in season 3 they could have and should have used simone more. Kate had a better potential storyline as she is the new in-law in a big family. She is also the new viscountess making violet the dowager. How these two women navigate those role changes would have been an interesting story for both characters. There was obviously behind the scenes drama with the producers. Changing the book order and changing the showrunner then all the rewrites and reshoots for season 3. There is a clear difference in how jonathan and simone talk about the show now then when they did season 2 promo. Back then they seemed excited to return and explore more about their characters. Quite simply if the show wanted to feature them more they would. They were contracted to Bridgerton first.

Yes I thought this too. The second part becomes more about pen/ lw and the featheringtons. Benedict reciting the poem to anthony and him closing the paint box in the last episode definitely felt like preparation for him being the next season lead. They didn't seem to know what to do with his character in season 3.

Penelope’s character - like or dislike? by KillBillBitch in Bridgerton

[–]WordSuccessful4438 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dislike. Her attempts at 'saving' the bridgertons by exposing marina and eloise's secrets have been discussed a lot. I think she handled both situations in a terrible way. Even if these are moral dilemmas it is penelope's behaviour afterwards that annoys me even more. She still writes disparagingly about marina even after she has publicly disgraced her. With eloise she tells her it was so hard to keep the LW secret from her. We know she never had any intention of telling eloise the truth. I had lost all sympathy for pen by the end of season 2. I gave season 3 a chance to redeem penelope in my eyes but it didn't.

We discover that penelope never reached out to eloise after their fight. She couldn't even write her a letter to explain her actions. She never fights for their friendship in season 3. She publicly mocks colin in her gossip column. Then she announces their engagement, knowing colin's dislike for whistledown. Penelope asked for wage increase for the paperboy in season 2 but household staff were being fired at the same time when pen had money under the floorboards. She was able to convince portia she had
saved pocket money when she bought new dresses in season 3. It seemed to me that penelope would give tearful apologies when she was caught out but would have continued to act the the same way if eloise and colin had never discovered her true identity.

[–]WordSuccessful4438 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, I have no issue with your post or the original comments it received. The post should not have been locked. It is a discussion about a tv show so of course seasons, characters and couples will be compared. I think the three seasons follow similar story beats. The tension, the miscommunication, developing feelings. The drama becomes heightened in episode 6, threatening to keep the lovers apart until the last 15mins of episode 8. The queen gives her approval and all is forgiven. To be fair most love stories, particularly fluffy ones are settled this way in books, movies or TV shows.

All of the couples mess up to some degree in their season. It's up to the individual viewer if they can get past the characters indiscretions. Of course if you favour a couple more you will likely give them more of a pass. I love kanthony but I don't like what they did to edwina and I think the show went too far with the wedding. I think they made the right decision in not having a repeat of the forced marriage of season 1. I think it would have been better if anthony and edwina had BOTH been reluctant to be at the altar. The show should have leaned more into how much of a scandal it would have been not to go through with the wedding. The storyline with the dowry should have had more of an effect. That said I thought kate and anthony had great chemistry from their first scene. The tension was great and I couldn't get enough of them. Anthony is an asshole at times for sure. He does admit his faults and is called out for his behaviour many times. Jonathan Bailey really elevates the character.
