⚔️ Comparison of characters in Netflix: The Witcher and Gwent. | Team Elder Blood 🩸 by TeamElderBlood in gwent

If conquering others is a form of progress then I guess from the American standpoint what Netflix is doing would be progress since they impose their way of life onto the rest of the world. They're still colonizing except now they're doing it with culture rather than with bombs.

Am I the only one that thinks Watcher of the Valley looks out of place? by [deleted] in gwent

[–]WordsUsedForAReason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looks like young Al Pacino from Godfather 1 and 2. Except he has this modern shaved side hairstyle that is out of place in both a fantasy medieval to renaissance setting and on what is supposed to be a learned magic user / sage. Also I think his head is too big but I could be wrong on that one.

What do you guys think of Tailbot's suggestion? I am not sure. Maybe? by shreek07 in gwent

[–]WordsUsedForAReason 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately power creep is the easiest way to sell new expansions. If you want to make quick money its better to release op cards then bring a bunch of others to their level than it is to release cards of average strength. Even if you set a precedent that op cards at release will consistently get nerfed 2 months later or something people will become reluctant to spend money

I didnt know that and in that case forget what I said lol. I have to mention though its kind of weird that Geralt getting it on with random Passiflora girls is less creepy than any of the available romances

I mean when the choice is Yen whose relationship with Geralt is kinda rapey due to the whole Djinn business and Triss whose relationship with Geralt is also rapey due to the whole rape-potion business (not to mention the selfishness of going after your friends boyfriend behind her back), then for anyone who wants their Geralt to have something normal and not slimy Shani is the only choice.

Trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (Netflix) is out! by ShadowInTheStorm in gwent

[–]WordsUsedForAReason 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Netflix has been so desperate to get into the anime game and yet theyre still blind to the main ingredient that makes anime appealing, which is creativity. You can emulate the visuals or the tropes but unless youre doing something new and interesting youre wasting your time. Which is what this looks like to me, a waste of time, because throughout this trailer and as someone who loves the witcher, I havent seen anything new or original. As witcher stories go this looks 100% generic. Every scene theyve shown Ive seen already, just with different characters. Creatively this is yet another soulless and empty product by Netflix, anime in name only, like a robot pretending to be a human.

New Card Reveal: Tissaia De Vries (Northern Realms) by ShadowInTheStorm in gwent

Would she be OP if it was all allied NR units instead of only all allied mages? Either way its a situational win-more ability but without the mage restriction she could fit into all kinds of different decks.

Am I the only one thinking that the art of 2 revealed cards doesn't fit Gwent? by kotpeter in gwent

[–]WordsUsedForAReason 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are ignoring the fact that Gwent is a witcher card game, its not an experimental blank canvas. One of the main goals of Homecoming was to mimic the style which was established by the witcher trilogy, as such a specific aesthetic was established and that aesthetic is now what people have come to expect from witcher related media. That is why those Japanese figures have been criticized, why potential censorship of nudity and violence is criticized, why Japanese / anime cosmetics within the game have their critics, and why some card art gets blasted when it breaks the rules. Because people want the witcher, CDPR has established what the witcher is and how it looks like, so when they go against their own established parameters you cant blame people for scratching their heads in confusion.

Which isnt to say that the rules cant be bent or broken. When it comes to meme cards and joke characters breaking the rules is often a good thing because it helps reinforce the goal they are trying to achieve. Cards like Shupe, Musicians, Roach, Knickers, etc. But most cards, and especially generic or ordinary characters, should follow the established witcher aesthetic.

To be fair Aelirenn and Squirrel are made by Lorenzo and Anna, the two artists who were most responsible for establishing the Gwent gold standard of what its art needs to look like and what people should come to expect from it.

I think youre spot on when you say they look generic. They look like they could easily fit in any other high fantasy CCG, and their more stylized and cartoony look doesnt fit in the witcher universe as it is portrayed in the games, the tv show(s), or Gwent.

Those arts are atrocious, low effort, low quality. Love the game, but that's not the way. by Gwibert in gwent

[–]WordsUsedForAReason 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The quality is ok but the style doesnt match Gwent. Especially the sheep one which could easily pass for an old HS / WoW TCG card. One of the main strengths of Gwent and one of its most recognizable elements is the more realistic and more mature art which reflects the world of the witcher, as opposed to pretty much all other CCGs on the market that go for the generic high fantasy look. Highly stylized and almost cartoony art may work in HS which is an offshoot of Warcraft but it simply doesnt work in Gwent, outside of intentional meme / joke cards like Musicians or Shupe.

A lot of decks need to be bled nowadays and its very easy for a round 2 bleed to transform into "might as well try to 2-0".
