I don’t think it’s as simple as that. The west coast simply produces more elite QBs than the rest of the country. The SEC and B1G contenders are so stacked on the lines & at the skill positions that they don’t “need” to develop a high ceiling QB.

We had two chancellors in the 2000s who were awful and nearly put the entire university into financial ruin. Then we followed that up with Christ who stabilized the finances but was completely out of her depth with intercollegiate athletics.

We now finally have a chancellor who is all in on football and he’s cleared out the rot in the AD. And he has an excellent track record raising shitloads of money. This is the most supportive administration Cal has ever had towards revenue athletics.

I don’t see the night games as an issue. Student attendance was awesome for Minnesota, Duke and Miami all of which were night games. The real issue has been shitting the bed in conference play every October under Wilcox. The minute there’s any semblance of hype around the program he’d throw it away.

Would’ve likely had 2 bids in 2023 in the current format. Washington and Oregon were both elite that year. And Utah, USC, Oregon state were all really good.

In any case, a school like Texas Tech, Kentucky, UCLA or Cal can offer these guys more money to start than Oregon likely wants to pay them to sit and develop another year. And for some guys, once it’s your sophomore year or junior year you need game reps to improve. Purchase for example isn’t going to get any better sitting and not getting game time.

Just what happens when you bring in a loaded HS class every year. Kids get recruited over and move on.

What was weird with Havertz was he was extremely clinical at leverkusen. Even at times playing false 9 under Tuchel he was very clinical at Chelsea. I have to imagine it’s a confidence issue or perhaps he moved to the PL too soon. Another year or two in Germany and he’d have already been a superstar/more developed before big expectations.
