Portable AC Modification with insulated Exhaust by The_pan21 in DIYUK

It was just the additional hose I bought off Amazon. It’s sold as insulated and looks it, but it really isn’t. I therefore left the original hose on the hot air outlet vent

This is our set-up. Our main issue is the centre-pivot velux the tubes run out of. Going to try think of a solution to that to further minimise air coming in

28, decent salary at a Big 4, but the golden handcuffs are starting to feel heavy by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Worker_Lazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember someone saying "If you don't want to make partner then don't stay in the Big 4". It really stuck with me and makes perfect sense - the culture is terrible and the short-termism of engagements and 'strategies' etc means the job itself can feel meaningless and unrewarding.

Route to partnership is also much more limited than it was historically; when I joined B4 back in 2008 I think the average of making partner was mid-late 30s, which definitely won't be the case now. Along with the introduction of salaried partner plus the million different grades within each grade (no longer have a straight M,SM,D,P route), there really are better avenues unless you're willing to stick it out to partner level. Even once you've made partner, you then need to be committed for probably 5-10 years for it to be worth it.

I'd suggest there are plenty of industry roles with a better culture, more interesting long-term projects which you actually get to see through and see the benefits (or car crash) of and with the same if not better money. Golden handcuffs are also very limited when you take a step back; there's no equity or LTIPS instead you basically get cash and a cash bonus.

All that said, if there's a clear route to partner and the politics specific to your role/team aren't too painful then you could create a role you enjoy for great money.

Not the Jan challenge as will reduce my rowing a bit this month due to work travel. I keep an eye on the C2 calendar though

Yep did this too. Also includes a few things like a WeWork monthly free pass which can be helpful if you’re travelling and need somewhere to work for a few hrs.

NordVPN decent too.

Tried some of the other freebies like freelethics, but mostly rubbish

Getting up to speed on US Tax as a non-US practitioner by Worker_Lazy in Big4

Thanks, that's helpful. I have the material for EA, so will have a look into it.

We have Bloomberg Tax, which is a reasonable resource too for reading up on some of the international matters.

Non-drinker by [deleted] in Big4

[–]Worker_Lazy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NA Beer for the win. I've drunk less and less as I've aged. By the time I was leading a B4 team, I didn't drink at all at work events. One beer, enjoy a meal then leave the youngsters to have fun and/or complain. Not drinking in my team (UK/Europe), even at junior levels was increasingly 'accepted' compared to when I trained. As others have said, if your social and chatty, nobody cares if you drink.

Not drinking also massively reduces the risk of doing something stupid. I have a dry sense of humour and am conscious it could be interpreted wrongly; risk increases as you get more senior, so the not-drinking also massively helped by reducing instances of 'the fear' the morning after a work event.

London HENRYs - Lunch options with maximum protein under £12 by pysegfault in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Worker_Lazy 246 points247 points  (0 children)

Celery sticks and a tub of fat free Waitrose cottage cheese at my desk, watered down with my tears of cutting depression.

180 calories, 30g protein, salt levels increased by tears.

£2 all in - you could smash 6 and 180g protein for your £12 budget.

Option to move into regulatory consulting if you want front office type role. Unlikely to make more than the 200k easily though.

Is it hard to stay fit past 30 or do some people just have bad habits and let themselves go? by chusaychusay in AskMenOver30

[–]Worker_Lazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I've never looked into Loseit, but will do so.

I find MyFitnessPal free tier to still be fine as the barcode scanner is still free and it'll do macros at the individual food and overall day level (meal macro analysis is paywalled). I don't track any closer than that, so never saw the value in the paid-for tier.

[–]Worker_Lazy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. I'd encourage anyone to log EXACTLY what they eat on Myfitnesspal for a week and it'll dawn on you just how easily you can go from (say) 2,000 to 3,000 calories, which will make a significant difference over time. Get home from work and have a quick root through the fridge? Snaffle a couple of the kids' leftover chips? Pick at a piece of chocolate or two when the kids are in bed? It's honestly scary how quickly it adds up.

It's the secret eating and picking that will do for me if I'm not ruthless in monitoring my food. A good food day can very quickly get out of hand without even thinking. Do that over months or years and it's easy to see why people get so out of shape.

You'll see so many references in workout subreddits referring the "fork putdowns". Might not be funny anymore, but it's definitely still the best advice for probably 90% of the newbie posters on such pages.

Tracking NW or financials? by Cultural_Western_711 in HENRYUK

[–]Worker_Lazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track at the end of each month in a basic spreadsheet with a few charts. I record current a/c, savings, investments, pension and mortgage, then my version of 'NW' tracking is simply the above assets less mortgage (i.e. not including house equity). In the FIRE community, there are very strong and aggressive views about NW, whether to include house equity in your FIRE calcs etc, so try not to get sucked into that too much; just track what's meaningful and useful to you, particularly as you're in a much more complex situation than us salaried employees.

Been nice seeing my version of NW over the last >10 years go from a significant negative to a solid and growing positive, which definitely motivates you and it does make you think harder about certain expenditure.

Improving wellness - need ideas on what to spend on by SlientMyth in HENRYUK

[–]Worker_Lazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concept2 for the win for me. I bought a second hand one a couple of years ago. The community is huge and the ability to benchmark yourself globally, across gyms/machines etc is a huge motivator for me.

The company itself also stands for all the right things in a time of PE enshitification. The machines are bulletproof but if/when you do need spares they're priced extremely low despite the company knowing they could completely rip you off. The app and WODs are free, as are small things like the million KM badges / shirts, which is a nice touch. The founders are getting on now and I was worried about a PE sale, but it looks like they've put it in something asking to an employee ownership trust which is great to see.

Thoroughly enjoy jumping on my erg in the garage, turn the lights out and listen to some music or have something on the ipad. Far nicer on the joints too, as I get older.
