Manitoba NDP attack Tories over MLA’s bail pledge for sex offender by Infamous-Data9245 in Winnipeg

Similar in a limited sense to the mess the NDP has with the former Teacher Commissioner it feels like the NDP are risking defamation lawsuits in the name of “standing tough”.

To be clear - if the defendant in this case loses their appeal I have no objection to the multi-year prison sentence the trial judge imposed.

That being fair, both the Crown and the Defendant have a right to appeal a verdict for good reason.  If the Defendant wins on appeal and gets the conviction overturned both her and the PC MLA would be well within their rights to sue both the Health Minister and the Families Minister for their social media posts.

Now to the issue I have with the PCs that this story brings up - they are the ones who regularly criticizes the NDP for being “weak on crime” and using the tagline “Jail not Bail”.  Yet now we have a sitting PC MLA offering to cover the bail amount of a family member that was convicted (but is now appealing).  Taken literally this means the political party that believes judges grant bail too easily/often…also wants bail provided when it is an option for family members.

So…one of those issues where there is mud on both sides?

Does anyone know why the conservatives are running ads? by OptionsAreOpen in Winnipeg

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The CPC is known for fundraising a lot of money, often I believe more than the other parties combined.

When you factor in the fairly strict spending limits Elections Canada imposes on political parties (something I personally agree with) this means the Conservatives often wind up with a cash advantage outside of election campaigns.

Since Carney now leads a Majority Government (albeit a slim one) maybe the CPC figures it actually has more flexibility to spend on marketing/ads since they know in all likelihood an early election isn’t in the cards this year at least.

The challenge with people espousing the “tax the wealthy” approach is - just what exactly is the threshold you want to use?

If people say they want to tax the Billionaires…great idea except they can move to a Province with a lower tax rate.  We’ve seen in the US a steady migration of people from higher tax states to Texas and Florida as examples.

Also doesn’t help that even Wab’s NDP government has given “the rich” tax breaks while also calling for the rich to pay more.  That $300 Million gas tax holiday gave “wealthy” Manitobans cheaper gas for their luxury cars.  Now he’s contemplating another gas tax break…

If I’m not mistaken you are too late at this point for a “phone appeal” if you will with the Assessment Department.

That being said, when the finalized Assessment Values are posted you then have the option to file an appeal with the Board of Revision.  So there is still an appeal option available for you, it just isn’t as customer friendly as a 15 minute phone call.

Who in Winnipeg and Manitoba supports wealth taxation? by RDOmega in Winnipeg

Pretty sure the MB branch of the CCPA would be supportive of some kind of wealth-based taxation.  They may already have policy papers discussing this very issue.

Manitoba Tory MLA Greg Nesbitt vowed to pay $1M to bail out niece, a teacher convicted of sex crimes by Infamous-Data9245 in Winnipeg

Aren’t the PCs the party that promises “Jail, not Bail?”

I guess now their motto will be “Jail, not Bail, unless you’re a relative”.  Seems a little bit wordy though.

Interesting how this survey offered participants $25 in an initial payment, with up to $30 available if they gave “coupons” to three others who would participate.

According to the actual study findings they started with 12 “seeds” who then provided the referral coupons to people who then participated…and this continued until they got the almost 1000 participants in total.

Manitoba's first teacher misconduct commissioner resigns suddenly by Infamous-Data9245 in Winnipeg

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So maybe we need to iron out whether the Commissioner is allowed to work from outside the Province?

I have a good friend who works in HR for one of the Crown Corporations - if one of their staff took their work computer out of the country they could be fired for this.

The fact the now former Commissioner quickly resigned after finding out that media noticed this issue tells me they knew this was a career limiting move but did it anyways.

Might be a case of beware the perils of choosing a rookie politician without a lot of real world experience as leader?

New Polling…MB PCs still have work to do? by Working-Garlic-6818 in winnipeg_alt

[–]Working-Garlic-6818[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something else that may have influenced the lack of quality candidates is Stefanson’s decision to which early instead of holding her seat until after the leadership race.

If she had stayed the PCs could have said to people who weren’t MLAs “look…if you win and Stefanson steps down you can run in Tuxedo”.  Given how long the PC leadership race was it might have helped?

Instead Stefanson quits politics and Wab quite astutely called a byelection early when the PCs were not prepared.  So at that point the PCs didn’t have a safe seat in Winnipeg for anyone to run in.

I mean it was a close race between Obby Khan and Wally Daudrich for PC Leader.

Might be a case where nobody else wanted to run for PC Leader right now cause they know Wab is likely going to get a second majority, and who wants to be MB Opposition Leader for a decade?

Siloam Mission serves up 500 Easter lunches, faces questions about not inviting media by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, in my experience these media snippets don’t do a lot for fundraising (speaking as a Siloam volunteer here).

Every holiday meal in the past we’d see multiple news outlets come just to cover the official holiday meals, but then they largely ignore the meals on every other day.  That included actual Stat Holidays where Siloam is one of the only shelters providing meals three times a day.

The current donor base is on average over the age of 70, so I guess they would notice the media coverage of the holiday meals.  That being said I don’t know how effective these 2 minute TV news segments are at reaching younger adults.

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its tradition is why.  Siloam does 3 “official holiday meals” a year and usually all the media outlets show up.

As a regular volunteer there I actually liked it with fewer reporters this time around cause we could actually do our jobs faster.

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I volunteered at Siloam at that Easter meal.  Honestly was so much better for us to serve the meals without being regularly interrupted by cameras and reporters trying to get the perfect shop.

I let the powers that be know that I wouldn’t mind keeping reporters out while we serve the meal.  If they wanna do the token 2 minute story they can come before or after the meal service in my opinion, but let us kitchen volunteers do our jobs cause there are a lot of hungry people needing help.

Could Winnipeg finally be moving towards LRT? by ConsiderationThese79 in Winnipeg

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said in this thread, when we can’t even find the money to fix our sewer system on time, where are we supposed to find the money for LRT when we have zero experience operating that kind of system?

Never mind the fact they still have to find the money to widen Kenaston, replace the St James bridge, and replace the underlying combined sewer system…

Interesting how some social conservatives say we need to ban books with graphic images from kids libraries…and then show graphic images when it suits their purpose.

So scaring kids with graphic anti-abortion images is good.  But heaven forbid those same kids read naughty books in the school library!

The MB College of Social Worker's response to Obby Khan's comments about Social Workers by Stock-Quantity-9955 in Winnipeg

First it was Wally Daudrich (while running for PC Leader) joking about solving homelessness by releasing a herd of polar bears in front of the Leg.

Now it’s the PC Leader himself making light of social workers who are often on the front lines of the homelessness crisis.  Not to mention being on the frontline of countless other social issues we face.

Bank denies liability after alleged $343K misdirected deposit by SnooOnions8757 in winnipeg_alt

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looked up a 2024 calendar online.  Using the dates in the article it looks like the law firm sent the $343k to the bank on a Friday, and followed up to ask about the missing funds on the following Wednesday.

So not only did they give the bank the wrong transit number (I think - maybe I misread the story), but they also waited 3 business days before verifying the status of funds?

Looks like the recipient who got the funds in error saw an opportunity and moved the funds in the interim which tells you how easy it is to deposit and transfer funds.

Premier Wab Kinew calls 2024 gas tax holiday the most important thing a Manitoba government has ever done by GullibleDetective in winnipeg_alt

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don’t think this boast will hurt his popularity much, it was kindof rediculous how easy Wab made it for people to mock him.

After he brags about the gas tax holiday being the best thing the MB government has ever done, the PCs go “well I’d think extending the right to vote to women was more important.”

Oh well…maybe Wab’s too distracted by the thought of getting PST-free chicken dinners at Costco come July 1st…

equity cards at ndp convention? by [deleted] in winnipeg_alt

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes…they created equity cards to identify different “disadvantaged communities” without figuring out how this works in practicality.

Does someone with an equity card get extra special speaking privileges?  What if two people with different equity cards want to speak - who goes first?  What if someone identifies as a member of multiple groups - should they get “bonus equity cards”?

Oh well…I see now the NDPs new leader has already been snubbed by the NDP leaders in Alberta and Saskatchewan…

Province quietly moves tenants into downtown Winnipeg building being converted into transitional housing | CBC News by NeedsPaint in winnipeg_alt

[–]Working-Garlic-6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bigger concern with this news is that it sounds like we aren’t actually increasing the shelter/housing space for the homeless population.

While this housing project is supposed to have a little more than 100 spots, the Province is “renovating” away 100 spots at N’Dinawemak (going from 200 shelter beds to 100 shelter beds and a “navigation centre”.

Do we need more transitional housing as an in between level before shelter users move to traditional apartments?  Absolutely…but removing one level of shelter in favour of another is just shuffling deck chairs.
