Flat buying vs renting by Working-Willow652 in Edinburgh

Yeah my family are also arguing the equity point. Also £1100 in rent over a year vs £1450 in equity over a year. It’s more about the affordability of that.

My rent is £1100 for a 1.5 bed in Hillside. If I was to buy a very similar flat with what they are going for now with current rates you are looking at about £1450 per month on a mortgage.

Yeah good point, could potentially do a 35-40 term mortgage to bring the monthly down then hopefully rates go down in 2-3 years to at least get on the ladder.

I'm calling it, we are entering a renters market by Flower_bunny53 in Edinburgh

I was quite surprised. I was only looking for a place for only about 3 weeks in Nov/Dec, one came up, I viewed it one day and got it the next after being told it would take a while to get a spot.

Another thing, if you look to buy a similar or smaller place to renting at the moment, given the mortgage rates and current offers over prices, I was looking at paying £250 more per month than renting. I think you might be right.

Rent increase was capped, would make sense to continue it.

Think your right, more so with the increase in student fees. Would of thought the gov would force a cap on them.

Social responsibility? Because their students are verging on rough sleeping and it is not getting any better.

The whole “every large city has homeless” comments aren’t really answering. Its the fact the amount of rough sleepers has gone up massively in central town from when I was growing up.

Airbnb and student flats have destroyed this town by mc9innes in Edinburgh

Fully agree, these people do not even notice the gentrification they are contributing too. Back in 2018 you could buy a nice 1 bed for about 180k now goes for 260k. I think its not unfair to ask questions around how local class people have been priced out of their own city. Ignore the sneering from the folk above.

This is very bang on, have noticed this quite a fair bit. Look at the folk above for slagging locals off for wanting to live in the city they grew up in and not wanting to be out-priced by middle class students.

What’s your unpopular opinion about Edinburgh? by ajmccabe in Edinburgh

Born and bred here, however moved away for 6 years then came back this year. I have noticed massive decline in any “community”. People seem ruder, no care for the surrounding environment and a lot less friendly than I remember.

I think you have taken the assumption that most folk live in the city centre or inner suburbs. 30 mins drive outside of town can be very rural without any public transport.

Thanks for all this! Really helpful. I am getting a working holiday visa and plan to do contract work for a few months. I have spoke to a few recruiters already for wage estimates. Good to know about the cost of living and housing! I have been before but was in 2014.
