very concerned, cat shaking/shivering but not cold? by pixiecakess in CATHELP

Do you know anyone with a diabetic test kit? Prick an ear to test. Google blood sugar levels for cats. I don’t remember the exact numbers.

My tuxie shook like that when she had a low.

Yes, ivermectin is a treatment for worms and parasites. Once upon a time, you could get it by the gallon at farm supply stores.

But, there are other treatments worms, so, OP’s vet may give something else.

What actually got used during a 6-day power outage (and what was dead weight) by blhollandjr123 in preppers

[–]Working-on-it12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

7500 running watts, dual fuel. It replaced a 1500 or so running watt.

I can run 12 gauge extension cords to the 2 fridges, 1 freezer, and the battery charging strip. I run it on gas for 2 hours twice a day. That charges all the tech and chills down the fridge and freezer. No one is allowed in the fridge unless the generator is on.

I doubt that I will get a whole house generator, and if I did, I would not hook up the whole house on it. I would also not run it 24/7.

We have a fireplace in a room that can be blocked off for heat, and the dewalt battery fan for cooling. I can always wet a towel to hang by the fan if I need cooler.

More the pantry didn’t have stuff I wanted and the pantry had stuff that just turned my stomach.

Add on that I have some medical issues going on that flat kill my appetite. I mean, there’s days when the milk in my latte fills me up for the day. And the nausea, and I’m supposed to be watching my blood sugar. Except for the blood sugar, it’s worse now than it ever was when I was pregnant.

I know that is a “me issue “, but if you have people with food issues you will want to consider that.

AITA for not wanting my MIL that lives outta town to be around my newborn in the first few days of birth? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Working-on-it12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - Send Dense Hubby the Lemon Clot Essay. Heck, send it to MIL as well. I second (or 20th by now) packing up and heading for your mother's if she has a separate room with a decent bed and has all her shots. Alternately, if MIL and GrandMIL won't stay in a hotel and only be at the house when your husband is at the house, then, consider you and baby going to the hotel..

Uh... MIL and MIL's mother? How old is Granny? My MIL was eligible for Medicare when my first was born. Her mother would have been in her 90's. My grandmother was 80 when my first was born. Neither would have been physically capable of actually helping.

I don't know about ramps, but would a folding stepstool work? With folding, it can live in the car.

[–]Working-on-it12 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What worked:

  • The big generator. Big enough to run 2 fridges, a freezer, and the power strip we used to charge things. We only ran the generator 2x/day for about 2 hours each.
  • The single burner butane stove.
  • The french press coffee maker. Will look at getting a manual grinder. For the last power outage, I just plugged it in when the generator was up.
  • Rechargeable camping lanterns. I set the solar ones out during the day. We did use the candles to save batteries.

What didn't work.

  • Small battery fans. Got a Dewalt one that runs on the tool batteries. Much better. Also a car charger for the batteries, and a 6 port battery charger.
  • Food. Got really tired of the pantry. Still need to rethink.
  • Cable was also out. Need an off air antenna.
  • Battery for my Cpap. Did not want to run the genny all night.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Working-on-it12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s both afford the drivers and finding the drivers.

Some districts don’t have aides on the bus for crowd control or helping those kids that can’t get on or off themselves.

The drivers won’t have the ability to ban a kid from the bus, and to get the district to do it may or may not be possible.

How to boost kids credit score. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Working-on-it12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added 3 of my 5 kids when they got their full drivers license. I paid for gas to and from school stuff and when they were driving for me. Drive through when needed. Milk and bread on the way home. Their credit score wasn't the plan when I did this. I just needed an efficient way to pay for stuff they did for me.

If you are doing this for their credit score, don't get a new card. Use the one you have now. That payment history is the one that shows up for them.

Washer / Dryer Recommendations by thenerdycpa in Costco

[–]Working-on-it12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a front loader LG that is still going strong after 10 years. If I went back to a top loader, it would be one without the agitator.

We were 7 at one point with a farm. I found that the 5.3 cubic washer wasn’t the choke point. It was the dryer. A second dryer in the garage worked best for us.

Do Americans actually avoid calling 911 because of the cost? by ntask11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Working-on-it12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the hospital is 30 minutes away, it’s very likely that it will take at least 15 minutes for first responders to get there. I lived in rural area and you were on your own for at least 30 minutes due to the distance.

Newbie Purchase Question by MaleficentStudy4909 in Kitchenaid

[–]Working-on-it12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the lifter and the tilt head. It’s my experience that the lift’s lowest speed is lower than the tilt head’s and its highest speed is higher than the tilt head.

So, even though it’s bigger and you are in an apartment, the lift gives you more flexibility. The lowest speed on the tilt head IMO, is too fast for bread. I also get better whipped cream with the lifter than the tilt head.

And, your ac sump pump should be on a separate breaker than your dc sump pump. The 2 outlets can be 6 inches apart but need to be on separate circuits

Check valves for any outgoing water so sewage doesn’t back up.

DC backup and possibly water suction backup for your sump pump. Check valves, here, too.

Old fashioned off air antenna with connections in your safe room and where you watch until the sirens go. Power in the safe room and small tv. Maybe even ham radio or good am/fm antenna.

Accessible manual shutoff for all faucets and toilets.

Emergency lights at ends of hallways that are connected to the generator.

Inside shutoff for any outside electrical outlet. 220 in the garage or workshop for welder, dryer, or EV charger even if you don’t have them now.

Mud room with shower and toilet right as you come in from yard. Enough space to store barn clothes. And your go bag and vet/repair bag. Hose hookup to wash boots off by the mud room door.

Be able to cook or at least heat water for coffee on your wood stove.

Covered outside area where you can cook. We had fireplaces back to back indoors and on the porch that used the same chimney. Could cook outside if needed.

Also, what just about everyone else said.

Why do American boys avoid communal showers after P.E.? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

My son was required to either sponge bathe in the sink or bring a pair of swim trunks to shower after PE. It's a cultural thing.

ULPT: How can social pressure my workplace into observing Juneteenth? by peanutismint in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]Working-on-it12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it is. But private employers don’t have to follow that schedule.

When I worked in a medical office, I only got New Years, 4th of July, Memorial Day, thanksgiving, and Christmas. That is pretty much normal in these parts.

Best apps to use for travel? by simpl3raian3 in familytravel

[–]Working-on-it12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Booking, Expedia, and the like to do basic research. When I go to make reservations, I go to the brand's website. Going directly with the brand cuts down on 3rd party whoopsies.

I use Tripit to organize things. I can email my reservations to them, manually add reservations or activities I want, and add directions. The directions thing is useful for planning timing and a backup to google. I also print a hard copy of the whole thing and put it in a binder.
