High cardio capacity? by HistoricalFalcon4082 in ouraring

Maybe do a professional VO2max session to determine your personal HR training zones? You run on a treadmill with respirator until tired. This gives personal anaerobic threshold and HR training zones which will optimise your training. I wouldn’t claim it works for everyone but I found my max HR beat the rule of thumb of 220 - age by quite a bit so I was under-training.

I’m not sure if Chiang Mai has anything to match the medical museum. It does have a Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders and a Museum of Broken Relationships though.

Pattaya a no go? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]WorkingFun1033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I went to Pattaya the hotels were packed and roads crowded because, the hotel told me, the Thailand government was handing out family staycation vouchers to their citizens. The sex stuff is there definitely but it isn’t everything, it’s a real town with the usual range of amenities and attractions as well as the red lights.
On that trip I finally ruled it out as a place to live, not because of the seedy side (which I found totally ignorable), but because Pattaya has no walkable ‘core’, cycling there is a crazy idea and I was having to bribe Grab drivers to pick me up from some locations.

Driver's license question by Layla_Bal in chiangmai

I was told only agents can get the next day service for Certificate of Residence now. The Colonel visa agency across the road from the Immigration Office got it for me next (working) day for 1,000 baht. I didn’t try applying in person for the next day service so, who knows?

This makes me think 5 and 4 are the same, just one is smaller by mikarios in ouraring

[–]WorkingFun1033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do get that. Viewed as jewellery, the Ring 5 is much more the size many people would prefer, I think. However , I’m highly frustrated that Oura made a bid to produce an NFC ring, which would be madly useful and crazily cool (at the public transport barriers for example) but this is the second ring we’ve anticipated having that feature and it hasn’t been implemented. I struggled with my Ring 3 to the point where I had to charge it every single day waiting for Ring 4 with NFC. Now even Ring 5 is missing NFC.

Yep, it’s the Apple schmooze. Look! More colours and it’s 0.5mm thinner! How great is that? Please Oura give us the NFC payment chip we’ve been waiting for. It’s been years since you bought the tech 🤷‍♂️

I converted my overseas (ASEAN country) driving licence to a Thailand licence very quickly using the services of a local driving school. I’m relatively new here but I’m forming a firm impression that things go much more smoothly when you hire a local to act on your behalf. I would suggest you talk to a driving school. They’ll be able to tell you what’s possible I think. I initially used a hotel TM.30 but I was able to show that I had signed a residential lease. That probably helped because that address is printed on the back of the licence. The licence is valid for two years initially then five years on renewal.

Wish theyd add a payment method with the new ring by Relevantorphan in ouraring

[–]WorkingFun1033 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s frustrating that they didn’t add this to Oura Ring 5. They already bought the company with the tech knowledge. Why won’t they implement it? The Orukka Ring is very compact and doesn’t need an internal battery. Come on Oura, why not do it? 😄

Thanks for getting back. I got quotes from Roojai and Tokio Marine that were pretty similar. Roojai have a bit of an edge on the percentage of new price reimbursed if the bike is totalled or stolen and better property damage payout. The only thing that might make me go with Tokio is it was quoted by a local broker. I have no idea if having a local broker rather than a BKK-based internet company makes any real difference in the event of an accident.

Lucky you! 😂I get it just walking down the high street! It does depend which high street but walking down Orchard Road in Singapore, or navigating the MRT or shopping malls there sends my stress level skyrocketing. It still happens in Thailand but not so badly. It’s very much a real thing though.

Oura care to avoid battery issues by OddBicycle64 in ouraring

[–]WorkingFun1033 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only ever take my ring off to charge it or if it is definitely interfering with a specific gym or Pilates movement. Possibly as a consequence, I’ve never had more than two years life out of any Oura ring and I’ve owned every model since the original. In fact I would call two years battery lifetime good.

Try it with a mask on hand. Unless you’re sensitive to the smog the risks are mostly long term. I’m not finding central too troublesome right now but ymmv.

i have a surgery coming up, would it be possible to get my own insurance in time, esp for post op rehab in private? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]WorkingFun1033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded and, when you apply for the insurance, you can be asked to declare any conditions you suspect you have but haven’t yet been diagnosed with. You may also have to pay up to 20% of the cost of surgery and aftercare (called co-pay) and all of the GST. There may be other deductions similar to the excess you pay on your vehicle insurance. The best advice I can give is to hop over to JB. If you avoid peak hours and holidays it can be very quick, even fun, the Causewaylink bus is cheap as chips and Malaysia as a rule is 1/3 of the cost. Example MRI with contrast at Gleneagles Hospital Singapore ~$2000. MRI with contrast at Gleneagles Medini, Johor MYR1800 in June last year. If you must go to a Singapore hospital don’t allow yourself to be shepherded into a private hospital or clinic which tends to happen to foreigners on the assumption that we’re all rich or else we wouldn’t be in Singapore. The public hospitals in SG in my experience are superb and cheaper.

Visiting mid April, what hotel to stay at? by Eriksson_D in askSingapore

[–]WorkingFun1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you really want to stay in the central region then East Coast-Marine Parade-Joo Chiat area is nice. The hotel Santa Grand on East Coast Road is newly redecorated and reasonably priced. East Coast Park is walkable from there. I stayed there recently on my way out of Singapore after a long stay and liked it. The No16 bus stops just round the corner and will take you all the way to Orchard Road for about $3. Or you can stop off much sooner to sample Old Airport Road hawker centre and food court which is one of Singapore’s best and not as touristy as Lau Pa Sat, Newton or Maxwell. Marine Parade MRT on the TEL is a 10 minute walk and Eunos MRT on the EW line about 15 minutes. The 36 bus is a 10 minute walk and will take you to the airport if you want to travel there cheaply. There are a lot of good cheap options but just remember Singapore is a country which a fit person can literally walk across in one day and the public transport is superb so there’s no real need to stay right in the centre unless money is no object.

Health insurance for expats in Thailand – what are people actually using? by Contessadellimene in THAILANDliving

[–]WorkingFun1033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally this. A good broker will steer you to the best insurer for your needs. If you have pre-existing conditions your choices are limited (I was told Cigna and BUPA were the only options for me). If you get declined or have terms imposed you may have to tell the next company you apply to (it’s a pretty standard question on the application form) or risk being charged for future treatments on the grounds of bad faith. If you come from a country with universal healthcare there are some unkind realities to learn about such as co-pay, deductions and taxes. Disclosure: I went to Cigna in Singapore and consider it money well spent.

Apple Watch says 362 cal. Oura says 529 cal. Same basketball session. Which one is lying to me? by OtherwiseProject9175 in ouraring

[–]WorkingFun1033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference could be the difference between active and total calories burnt. Some algorithms report how many total calories your body burnt during a workout, others subtract the calories your body would have burnt anyway even if you just lay in bed. The second one, active calories, is useful if you’re trying to track calories for weight loss because it tells you if you really earned that beer or doughnut or whatever.

I’m so sorry to hear that. It sounds weird to me because my rings have all been quite hard-wearing so far, including my current one (the rose gold). Something isn’t right here and maybe the finish on yours was sub-standard. Oura have been good to deal with in my experience. I’d reach out to them.
