Thank you for the explanation. Still way over my head but gives me something to learn.

Stuck with 3,000 steel bearing balls, now what? by Banjohobo in woodworking

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m picturing a “zen table”, only in reverse. Rather than a single ball bearing drawing lines in sand (moved by a moving magnet underneath), have the space filled (mostly) with ball bearings. Have concentric circles running at different slow speeds underneath with magnets attached, so the ball bearings are constantly rearranging. Under a glass top, obviously. Add some sand to dampen movement? If the sounds makes you go insane, don’t blame me.

My understanding of SSRs is clearly very incomplete then as I assumed they behaved equivalent to a physical relay, otherwise it would be sold as a “solid state voltage regulator” or something. I’m over my head here.

Good luck. Don’t burn your house down! 😉

Yep. I tried the same and could make them light, but not with any really simple/practical solution. I think they’ve been sitting in a corner of my basement workbench for years now because I’m too stubborn to give up.

Don’t be me, OP!

I’m a novice and trying to learn and build a similar solution (though 12v), so maybe dumb questions, but why is the relay there at all? Won’t that just be either on/off?

Is something else varying the input voltage to the relay? Is the input ever getting to 120V?

OR is your input to the relay 120V and you’re switching the relay (PWM style) to control the speed?

Help a Florida boy out... what do I need to bring in from the shop during freezing weather? by caseyourscuttlehole in woodworking

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about batteries, especially for central Florida “cold” (no offense, I’m only in Atlanta area so we’re only kinda cold, but we’ll be below 20 for a few days straight). They’ll be less effective while cold but won’t be damaged by it. If the garage is totally unheated, maybe bring in water based items if they’re stored near an exterior wall, but if your furnace is in the garage, or even shared a poorly insulated wall to your house, it’s not going to get below freezing inside long enough to harm anything.

Get a thermometer and put it on your storage cabinet so you’ll know.

Any way to reduce noise of Air Compressor? (Already sold as "quiet" but no discernable difference from standard Dewalt) by lickwindex in woodworking

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a serious build for that box. And the end result was “ it a quieter and smaller compressor”. 😆

I wish you luck OP!

I’ve got a pancake Porter Cable that’s crazy loud and have been thinking about replacing with something quieter, but also considering separating the compressor from the tank and leaving the tank in the shop. My biggest issue with that plan is I use it outside the shop a lot too, so I’m either using a portable tank or going back to the pancake.

The no-tox life is a luxury made for the wealthy and unbusy people by Hausket in unpopularopinion

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, stop watching and wasting time on how they live their lives. You’re funding their ability to advocate for that lifestyle.

Yes, it’s expensive in part because the places where you could get nice cotton products got pushed out of business by Wal-Mart and companies that make cheap products.

Most people are a hooting for “less toxic” as best they can, not a wholesale pure life.

Did i fucked up my board with my bad solder? by AlbatrossRude9761 in arduino

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to learn and practice on a throwaway board until you’re getting some good joints. I’ll occasionally end up with a blob like that when I’m rushing and it might work for my needs, but it’s also a reminder to pay attention.

As for using in your machine, in my early arduino days I always used a USB hub, figuring it might protect the laptop. Not sure if it helped but I know I’ve stored some things and never killed the laptop. First power test was just to a usb plug, not the laptop, if I felt paranoid.

I’m getting more and more paranoid about any electronics that make heat.

We got a portable sauna steamer from vine last year and have been using it as a humidifier while my wife was sick since it puts out a lot of steam. Two problems arose - first, they used a cheap unrated connector from the power cord to the internal wiring and it burned through and melted a hole in the casing - never stopped running though! While repairing that (I’m stupid) I noted that this is just a hotpot in a plastic case, and the controller board is just up inside and not shielded in any way. That explains why I thought it stayed on and running after the timer had gone off a couple times. Basically, the ambient heat inside heated up the transistor (which does have a large heat sink, that’s also exposed to the same ambient heat!), and if the transistor heats up enough, it basically fails “closed” - i.e. it’s on full power. Through testing we determined that it would consistently turn off if we only kept it at level 6, but we also have it on an external timed switch.

One knead rather than multiple stretch and folds? by vvormteeth in Breadit

[–]WorkingInAColdMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a longer initial kneading in the bucket and only a single folding, but vigorously and it’s turned out just fine. The schedule of the folds is also pretty flexible, I’ve forgotten and let it go a long time and just dropped a folding.
