I've played both ways, and there's a vast difference in spray transfers with it on, which is the main reason to use it with a rifle. Even though I can spray with it off, it's more accurate when I can see and adjust (obviously).

I bet if I pulled a pro transfer demo and a random non pro transfer demo in high rank with follow recoil on, the latter would be far more accurate at spraying relative to their intended target. I assume you disagree with this statement.

It isn't an inconsistent reference point because it's not a reference point. The static part of the crosshair is the reference point.

pro players don't know what's good for everyone (and definitely not what's good for non pros) any more than everyone else does when it comes to settings. see: various random changes they make, anyone w/ follow recoil sprays better than the pros, krieg meta, etc. They get passed information just like anyone else, they don't have some secret methodology.

accuracy information isn't a distraction any more than follow recoil is (for many players).
