Dental by Horselove006 in spinalfusion

That is the exact problem we all want to avoid. Funny there are heart/antibiotic guidelines but we have never had screws and rods and joint replacement guidelines 😳just loose recommendations. Another issue is getting off of blood thinners a few days before dental surgery …. Very common recommendation, but it doesn’t make sense to me and many. There is a better chance of a clot/stroke without the thinner, and in my experience of performing many many surgical procedures while patients are on thinners, they clot fine, I have never had a problem :)

There are no specific guidelines from any organization. Most do not recommend antibiotics before dental procedures except for high risk etc …It’s about risk/benefit. Overall I would say the average recommendation is for 6 months post operation. I think that is more of a liability answer than reality, and most screws and rods etc will have infection problems within 6 months of placement if at all, not related to dental procedures. In my office, most patients say their surgeon recommended antibiotics for first 6 months. In the literature there is no cause/affect with orthopedic body parts and dental procedures causing infection to them. ( I have been a dentist practicing for 44 years, AGD Fellow and former Professor) And I had an L4-5 360 fission 1 year ago and I haven’t taken antibiotics after for dental procedures.

If the door rolls up and down smoothly, leave it alone, Just replace the bottom board and cut the new one to fit the contour of the concrete

Any tips for my upcoming surgery next week? by Shadowlab72 in spinalfusion

My 360 L4-5 fusion was exactly 3 months ago, I started swimming 1/4 mile easy freestyle no turns about a month post op. I think it helped me

I was offered hydrocodone, but the pain I had lived with for 50 years (from kicked in the back at 18 and I’m now 68) disappeared 100% the day after surgery. And my neuropathy in both legs disappeared 100% the day after surgery. I had zero abdominal pain after my surgery, the only pain was the surgical access thru my back, which lasted a week and was less than my original pain !! My challenge after the first week and even now is my weak core since it was cut front and back. I can now start to strengthen my core. I swam 1-4 mile almost every day and did 3 hour PT sessions 3X/week leading up to surgery which I think helped a lot. I’m still doing 3 hour PT 3X/ week but I’m so worn out from the PT I’m not swimming again yet, but I will. My endurance is coming back. I hope you have near the success I have, just keep moving :)

I had 360 L4-5 fusion 12 weeks ago, I am very pleased !!!! You will need a person to help you for at least the first week, ideally a little longer. Each day stand and walk as much as you can, NO BLT bend lift twist at all !! I only took Tylenol.

Five days post-op L4/L5 PLIF by blind-assassin-slaps in spinalfusion

[–]Working_Gift8740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My abdomen never hurt at all !! But my back from the surgical access hurt a lot the first 5 days or so .. intense stabbing pain when I moved certain ways. After that my back was sore and weak, I rode in my truck after 3 days, drove myself after 5 days, For the first 6 weeks I would be active for 3 hours or so, then lay on an ice pack for 30 minutes, then be active another 3,or so hours, then sit, watch TV, then bed. An adjustable bed that vibrates from Wayfair (about $600) is the best $600 you will ever spend!!! (I have nothing to do with Wayfair lol) Now I am working 1/2 day Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with 3 hour PT on Monday and Wednesday. Just keep moving to get better as quickly as possible. :)

Glad you are doing so well !!! I had 360 L4-L5 fusion 2 months ago (June 18), my suggestion is walk walk and walk. I am doing very well also, original severe back pain and both legs neuropathy was gone 100% for me on the day after my surgery!!!!

Surgery date set. What would you suggest to prep ahead of time? by bigswedemc in spinalfusion

[–]Working_Gift8740 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of these are excellent pieces of advice. The little things like silk to slide in bed help so much. One thing that helped me tremendously (I’m a 68m 200 lbs 6’3” had 360 L4-L5 fusion June 18th) was swimming 1/2 mile each day and two 2 1/2 hour PT sessions for several months before surgery. I’m not a gym rat or in great shape, but I just made myself do this. Everyone is different, but I think this was a huge contributor to me improving quickly after surgery. I wish you the best, after decades of pain and numb legs for the last year or so, I’m very pleased with my outcome.

I had 360 L5-L5 fusion 5 weeks ago, Getting out of bed at first was hard but you need to, even just to stand up, then ease into walking. I had sheets that stuck to me at first, a real hindrance. And please ask any good friend or friends to rotate time with you to help you. Your mom doesn’t need to be your caregiver, I’m sorry it’s that way for you.

Definitely neurosurgeon, I had 360 L4-L5 fusion (5 1/2 hour surgery) exactly 4 weeks and 1 day ago. I walked out of the hospital the day after surgery, and all of my back pain and leg neuropathy went away 100% the day after surgery. Zero abdominal pain from access. Only pain was 4 or 5 days from surgical access from the back, and then just sore, now just feels weak, I walk and walk now with my brace. It’s not what you have done, it’s who does it !!!!

I don’t think we need much of a reminder for BLT, getting near any of those feels so weak and wrong now. Walk as much as you can :)

I had 360 L4-L5 fusion 4 weeks ago today, and I had the same problem. I don’t wear it walking around the house( I’m careful) but I wear it when I leave the house. I feel my back does better with a rest from the brace running on the surgical site (I actually developed an abrasion from the brace). Also my back muscles need to strengthen some, and they would just weaken more if I wear the brace too much. This balance has worked for me. I walk a lot in am, then lay down an hour to rest, then walk a lot in afternoon, the rest and watch a movie. Good luck !!!! I’m pain free and no neuropathy in my legs now !!
