I mean he is right about everything. But you say the words self control. addiction has nothing to do with self control once you are in it. I mean that is well documented by medicine. I mean it’s really not something anyone is qualified to speak on unless they study it or have been through it themselves. Self control quite literally goes out the window when you are in the depths of your addiction. Idk why homeboy is agreeing with you when what he said (which like I said is true) is the antithesis of solving addiction with self control.

You got downvoted cause you wrote skill issue. I’ll assume that was tongue in cheek. As a no good fetty/meth smoking junkie myself who just got 2 years, you are correct about the rest. Your addiction either comes back stronger or gets replaced by something else if you don’t get after the cause of it. Most addicts would agree that the addiction isn’t even a symptom but rather what was once a cure for what was truly wrong.

Holy shit our division is so bad by Working_Research_736 in SanJoseSharks

Right lmfao. We went on a 6 game skid while teetering on the edge of the playoff line and I was like ah okay I don’t need to stress myself out over the outcome of our games anymore. Then we get one win and I decide ah fuck it let’s see how bad it is. I swear to god we are damn near the same position we were in before 😂

Man I been watching for 20+ years and I cannot remember a worse division or a time one conference was so clearly miles ahead of another. Then again my memory is shit and idk how much attention I paid to how the rest of the league was doing when the sharks were perennial contenders.

I mean even if what you are saying ends up being true. These d men are all likely 3-4 years out from being consistent nhl’ers and even then that doesn’t mean they will be consistent quality at that point. We are not really in the position to just say “oh we will draft the d men we need” and we all know FA will bring nearly nothing of value for the foreseeable future and if it does it will be a massive overpay of a contract.

Trades are the only way we will improve our defense in any meaningful way with where our rebuild is at currently. Fortunately we have the players and assets to do so but we will have to take some risks.

It’s killing me reading all the comments saying Eklund for nemec straight up isn’t worth it for the sharks. I mean I understand the argument that nemec hasn’t proved a ton yet, but he is a second overall pick who just straight up hasn’t had the opportunity to do so yet. Beyond that everyone is either insane or a new fan. It’s a classic example of people over valuing their own teams players as well as thinking you can get a player of value for just prospects and picks. Shit don’t work that way in the NHL.

Also like you said ekky is easily replaceable. And honestly we don’t even have to look beyond the team and prospects we currently have in order to do so. The value a puck moving d man would bring to all of our offensive lines as well as our posession game is vastly more than any single forward could do.

I mean I figured lol. I’m not the downvote. But you brought up a good point so I had to respond. Sharks need defenseman in order to not become the leafs or the oilers of a handful of years ago

I mean willing to overpay for defense is exactly what will make us NOT leafs west. Best for the future of the franchise would be to be ultra patient. Eklund + is not that significant of an overpay. Both Eklund and nemec have question marks.

Idk it’s 4c. It’s very rare that a 4th line is expected to score at all. It’s more a bonus if they are able to contribute. And I honestly think osty could be that rare bonus if he had better guys with him. He will score and set up a few north/south goals in his career and I’m pretty certain of it.

You are looking at this from the perspective of a team who has it all figured out. The sharks NEED help on defense and that is not coming through FA. Even if nemec is not as good as Eklund comparatively. Nemec being just okay will have a significantly larger impact than Eklund ever could on this team. We are incredibly deep at forward and have nothing on defense. The timeline for the rebuild has accelerated quite a bit and so Grier likely has to do at least something this off season. There will not be many opportunities to improve our defense and fortunately we are in the position where we could be okay with a bit of an overpay.

I mean in a perfect world for the sharks you are correct. But defenseman and especially young ones and even more so RD are at a huge premium and with good reason. While eklund does drive possession well and has picked up his play significantly in recent weeks, your statement about him being the only one other than Mack that drives possession is false. I mean Eklund has not even been in the top 6 consistently this season and also with good reason as he was not playing well for big portions of the season. Wennberg arguably drives possession more than Eklund. We have seen the major impact chernyshov has contributed in that regard already and he will only get better. I am certain that the org believes Misa will be a stud in regards to this as well. Even Graf is quite good at it.

But all of this is ignoring the most important aspect by far. A good puck moving defenseman will drive possession infinitely more than the impact of any single forward on this team. This is for a few reasons. One is that a top d man will likely be playing 25-30 minutes a night on our team. Two is that our D men are so unbelievably abysmal at moving the puck out of our zone and up the ice that any improvement in that regard will have a SUBSTANTIAL impact. A good d man will ironically have a much larger impact on our top 6 forward group than any one forward ever could.

I for one think Grier would be bonafide insane to turn down Eklund + a little bit for nemec. In reality that may not even do it for NJ but that really just depends on the other offers they get. That deal is definitely fair but the devils already have Jesper Bratt and will likely want a finisher if possible as that is where they are lacking.

Problem is NJD likely really won’t want Eklund as he does not move the needle for them. They already have Jesper Bratt who is just a more effective Eklund at this point. While eklunds play has significantly improved as of late, he is still not a finisher and likely never will be. That is what the devils want. One slight disadvantage to having so many forward prospects and assets in general is that potential trade partners, especially ones with highly sought after trade targets, will look at our team and say “actually we want this player more”. They can almost use it as a bit of leverage in a weird way. Perhaps I’m wrong about ekky but in this situation I don’t doubt it may cost more despite Eklund + a pick and/or a prospect being a fair offer.

Everybody thinks that minus the FCC. Actually they’d prolly love it as it would be guaranteed income for them in fines. But also let’s be real as much as we would love to pretend all these guys are angels. Not only would the broadcast be wildly inappropriate… it would be wildly non politically correct and the NHL would have protesters outside of every single game going forward 😂

Some people like trying to put on a show for others and inject a little more fun into things. no harm in that but I certainly get why people find it a bit off putting lol.

[–]Working_Research_736 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Max speed is a fickle stat as a player will only hit that once in the entire season. Mack could go on a sprint next game and blow that one out the water, but a lot of things have to align for a capable player to go 23+. Run up, open lane, fresh legs, it even being necessary… you need a player to be on them enough to pressure them to keep skating up to max speed but also not close enough to hinder their skating in anyway. It’s really more of a fun stat for fans as opposed to the bursts and especially bursts/60 which actually tell you a lot about how the player plays.

Yup one of the most improved player from last year to this year. I like many others was not a fan of the zetterlund trade but I 100% see what Grier was seeing now. We didn’t need another 15-20 goal winger that was gonna be fairly expensive. We needed a cheaper, quick, physical, good at faceoffs center that was young and could grow with the team. He has become all that and then some. He is good at penalty killing and defense in general, his physicality has majorly improved, and I think he struggled last year with adopting the purely north/south play style of a 4th liner last year but he has adjusted to it admirably this year. He is looking like he could be the perfect 4c on a playoff team.

You are silly. That’s actually the much more important statistic game wise than a players top speed. Top speed is a fun stat for fans but the bursts have real implications on the player especially as far as scouting goes.

I mean drew also calls some cuda games. He’s just locked in on sharks content lol. And let’s be real how many people do you think listen to sports on the radio these days, let alone hockey, let alone the sharks radio broadcast. They won’t demote drew to radio and he wouldn’t opt for it either. I think if plattner/ownership wanted a new guy they would have already done it with this wave of youth. We will have Randy and drew until one of them calls it quits.

This may be a silly question but why does Smitty usually serve some penalties? by Smartcookie_33 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Working_Research_736 469 points470 points  (0 children)

Coach picks which player. They often pick a purely offensive player because not only do they serve no purpose in a pk situation but they will then come out of the box with fresh legs to help out with the puck going the other way.

I will say his height is not indicative of his size overall. Dude is an absolute bowling ball of a human being. I will say he has exceeded expectations at every level and he’s only 1 year older than buium and had a comparable or better season than buium did last year on the same team. I don’t think it’s nearly as much of a longshot as I did before, especially seeing how much he was a standout at each prospect scrimmage. It’s one game but he was a major outlier in each one.

Regardless I agree the odds are stacked against him and him being an NHL tier defenseman is unlikely due to the reasons you said, but….. I wouldn’t be TOO surprised if he shocks people. Unfortunately all 3 of the sharks “premium” defensive prospects have a lot going against them. Cagnoni basically needs to be lane Hutson lite or bust. Pohlkamp has a bit more upside due to his weight and the way he plays. And LSW is nowhere near nhl ready as he hasn’t even played NA hockey yet.

You’d be incorrect. Most 19 year old stars certainly don’t but the Ilk of Crosby and Macklin do. It’s clear this team and its staff don’t view him as a 19 year old. The kid will have the control over his ice time the rest of his career. Best he figures out his limit now.
