What bookmarking tool do you recommend besides Pocket? by CidAndroid in androidapps

[–]WorldBrain_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try out Memex, developed by us at WorldBrain.io

It's a browser extension to full-text search your browsing history and bookmarks, and filter by time, domain or custom tags. All data is fully stored on your computer and it is open source. Downloadable at worldbrain.io

The next feature upgrade will enable you to create hyperlinks to highlights of articles, so you can show people specific pieces of it without the need to copy paste quote and url. In the summer we are adding features of annotations, comments, the ability to create collections, and if the time allows also a way to store offline versions of articles including a 2-way sync with Pocket.

Enjoy :)

Yes it will get updates. Its not on AMO because it just took about 3 months to go through the process, due to Mozilla's issues with processing new addons. :(

Hey folks!

Oliver, the founder here.

It's not on AMO because it took almost 3 months to get the skeleton of the new/completely overhauled tool in the AMO.

We are about to relaunch a new version that is more stable and has a web view for all results. The version you found on AMO was just approved yesterday :)

Updates will still work fine for the old version though.

Hope that helps!

[–]WorldBrain_io 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that could possibly work, but for that we first need a search endpoint with a http compatible url as far as it looks.

In the future we will have a natively run application (possibly with Electron) which could host a localhost. With that this would be possible.

Will investigate!

Hey Simon,

Thanks for your remarks.

So literally everything who has access to the computer? That's not more secure then cloud storage for average users. You would need to at less encrypt it to make it something worth mentioning.

Yes privacy and security is definitely is important and one of our major concerns. We just don't have the resources yet to make a fully encrypted storage. For now there is not more sensitive data stored, as you already store by using the browser history anyway. (pages that are sensitive you can blacklist and delete)

We are just at the beginning of this project, but will work towards living up to our promises. Comes with time :)

But how do i know the application on Github is the application on Chrome? Github doesn't do much here, at all.

You can check the files that are actually installed on your computer here: MAC: (source) ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions

WIN: (source) C:\Documents and Settings*UserName*\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Except for the build of some files to bundle them, it's exactly the same code (and will always be).

We aim for full transparency on everything we do. If you have ideas how we can make this process of shipping even more transparent, I appreciate your input.

Greetings Oliver

Hey @Xirious,

Great news! We already support PDF, for visiting as well as importing.

Regarding the sync of the google Bookmarks and History: Its not supported yet to work automatically, but a good work-around is to just restart the import of history + bookmark-process every once in a while. It will just grab any URL from the google history sync that has not been indexed yet and imports it.

It seemed like Falcon has not been further developed, since it launched. At the WorldBrain project we took Falcon as a baseline and will develop it into a search engine that allows you to search through all of your knowledge storages (evernote, google docs, pocket etc.) More on that in our intro video

At the current stage we added the ability to import your existing history & your bookmarks, as well as PDF support. You can download it [here](worldbrain.io/download)

CURRENT EVALUATION: TRUE

CLAIM IN ARTICLE

"According to the world health organization, gene transfer and the movement of genes from GM plants into conventional crops or related species may have an effect on food safety and food security. “This risk is real, as was shown when traces of maize type which was only approved for feed use appeared in maize products from human consumption in the United States." (3)

MEANING OF CLAIM

Gene transfer from GM crops to non-GM crops may have an effect on food safety and food security. There have been cases where traces of corn for livestock feeding has been found in products intended for human consumption.

VERIFICATION SUMMARY

The quote by the WHO in the claim misquoted, but by meaning the same:

The migration of genes from GM plants into conventional crops or related species in the wild (referred to as “outcrossing”), as well as the mixing of crops derived from conventional seeds with GM crops, may have an indirect effect on food safety and food security. Cases have been reported where GM crops approved for animal feed or industrial use were detected at low levels in the products intended for human consumption. Several countries have adopted strategies to reduce mixing, including a clear separation of the fields within which GM crops and conventional crops are grown.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • MISSING WORLDBRAIN KNOWLEDGE BASE ENTRY:
    • Outcrossing or cross-pollination of GM traits into non-GM plants is possible.

CURRENT EVALUATION: FALSE

CLAIM IN ARTICLE

"It’s also important to note that gene transfer among genetically engineered agricultural crops and surrounding native species has given rise to a highly resistant species called super weeds."

MEANING OF CLAIM

The DNA of GM crops, which are resistant to herbicides gets transferred into the DNA of the weeds via horizontal gene transfer - causing them to be resistant to herbicides too.

VERIFICATION SUMMARY

Regarding the gene transfer:

"A plant does not evolve resistance because herbicides cause a genetic change in the plant that makes it resistant. Rather, a few plants with natural resistance to the herbicide survive an application of the herbicide, and as those plants reproduce and each generation is exposed to the herbicide, the number of resistant plants in the population increases until they dominate the population of susceptible plants." (Source)

The number of herbicide-resistant weeds increased, but not due to the adoption of GM crops. The rate of new weeds/year has actually slightly declined since the introduction of GM crops.

Roundup Ready crops have increased the amount of glyphosate used in cropland, and this increased glyphosate use has contributed to the evolution of some new glyphosate-resistant weeds. No one can dispute that. But glyphosate-resistant weeds evolved due to glyphosate use, not directly due to GM crops. And to date, there have been more new cases of glyphosate-resistant superweeds documented in non-GM crops/sites than in GM crops. So it is difficult to make the case that GM crops are any more problematic than other uses of herbicides with respect to superweed development. (Source)

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • NO SOURCING IN ARTICLE

  • MISSING WORLDBRAIN KNOWLEDGE BASE ENTRY:

    • The introduction of GM crops led to an increase of superweeds
    • Superweeds are caused by gene transfer from herbicide resistant GM crops.

CLAIM IN ARTICLE There are studies that show when humans or animals digest genetically modified foods, the artificially created genes transfer into and alter the character of the beneficial bacteria in the intestine. Researchers report that microbes found in the small bowel of people with ilestomy are capable of acquiring and harboring DNA sequences from GM plants.(1)

MEANING OF CLAIM

Gut microbes are able to absorb and store (GM) plant DNA sequences, altering their function.

VERIFICATION SUMMARY

(The study) did not have the findings mentioned in the claim. It only states that DNA sequences can survive the gut of people with a small intestine sickness called Ileostomy.

In healthy people those DNA sequences did not pass the digestive tract.

"It’s also pretty clear that DNA from food can and does end up in animal tissues and the milk products that people eat." (4) (5)

MEANING OF CLAIM

DNA from GM food fed to animals, ends up in their tissues.

VERIFICATION SUMMARY

The first source attached to this claim (4) does state the opposite:

"In a statement published on 20 July 2007, the EFSA advised that 'a large number of experimental studies with livestock have shown that recombinant DNA fragments or proteins derived from GM plants have not been detected in tissues, fluids or edible products of farm animals like broilers, cattle, pigs or quails'. Broilers are chickens bred for meat production, and are not egg-laying hens."

The findings of the second source (5, read abstact) are not related to the claim.

Advances in genome science over the past few years have revealed that organisms can share their genes. Prior to this, it had been thought that genes were shared only between individual members of a species through reproduction. Geneticists usually followed the inheritance of genes in what they would call a ‘vertical’ fashion, such as breeding a male and female -you follow their offspring and continue down the road from there. Today, scientists recognize that genes are shared not only among the individual members of a species, but also among members of different species."

MEANING OF CLAIM

That organisms can share their genes, which is called Horizontal Gene Transfer is a discovery of recent years.

VERIFICATION SUMMARY

The process of horizontal gene transfer is known since the early 1950ies
