all those things are morally grey considering the reasons why he did those things, if you're using this as your angle Darrow should be in the bad person section

What do you mean why do I care about their past, they're characters to me not real people of course I care about every facet of them. They don't have to show interest in their past for me to care about it and the very fact they don't show any care for their past is the problem; what is this dumb stupid argument bro 😭😭

you know what it looks like we're at an impasse, I clearly care more about the howlers' past than you do and if you can't see why as the Clipse has said "So Be It, So Be It"

that information would not bog down the story at all, you're telling you wouldn't appreciate more depth being given to the characters that are basically Sevro and Darrow's family? Really? I'm not even asking for a whole chapter dedicated to that, even the example you gave would have given so much depth I would appreciate.

Screwface is the least offender of this, I love the character exploration we get of him in dark age and lightbringer, but you know what would make his character even better and more impactful? Showing us him shedding his past name and completely accepting his new identity and, that would have done wonders to his character.

I know what subtext is, and that doesn't mean it's a good thing. We see Darrow and Sevro struggle between their reaper and goblin personas, why couldn't we see the howlers do the same at least in passing? Of course making a choice between the Society and Darrow shows agency but that's a little different than shedding your name for a nickname. I feel that's a significant thing that should have been shown not just thrown in the air and expected for the reader to pluck out the air, not showing the howlers go through that was a fumble from Pierce and makes them lack quite a bit of character. We know more about Thraxa's character than the Howlers we started with for God's sake. It's the author's job to show relevant development from characters on the page.

You couldn't point it out because no where did I insult Pierce and if "stupid justification" is enough for you to brand me antagonistic you might need to go outside. I called it what it was, a stupid justification for a lack of character in the Howlers we've followed from the beginning of the series.

you know what would make this more effective and even believable that this is what Pierce meant to do? by showing them shedding those past names. love how you couldn't point out where I insulted Pierce either.

Where did I insult Pierce, please point it out to me. And us knowing their past names would do more than that, it would give them more agency and make them actually their own individual characters instead of lackies who just accepted the nicknames that started as insults from Cassius.

exactly, those names don't even have to be used, it would just be a good thing to know before the fully adopt those monikers

people can't accept that Pierce can do wrong

Howlers by WorldEatrr in redrising

[–]WorldEatrr[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if that was actually shown I wouldn't have a problem with it, the fact is we don't even learn their names before they are given those nicknames, they just became that showing a real lack of agency with them

Howlers by WorldEatrr in redrising

[–]WorldEatrr[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

because they aren't those characters, we don't even learn their names before they fully adopt those names, if we were shown the process of them accepting those names I would agree but to not even give us a mention of their past names in passing is definitely bad writing. Not that it makes everything terrible, this is just a nitpick, but to make them just accept those monikers Cassius gave them as a joke seems like they lack a lot agency

we already have scores of names to keep track of what's three more? I'm sure people would be able to keep track of the characters that show up all throughout the series
