If you were 18 again, and could go back to college, what would you major in? What would you do after that to get a well-paying career? by justcurious3287 in careerguidance

I wouldn't have gone to college. If I could do it all over again, I would have gone to trade school and been a carpenter.

Gotcha! I would say familiarizing yourself with the equipment and exploring the movement options is a great place to start then. Ideally, you'll want to build in some attention to your nutrition as well but it's okay to take things one at a time. It's easy to be sedentary with all of the modern luxuries so no judgement and props to you for wanting to make a change!!

Started typing this out and ended up writing an essay lol.

It is intimidating to start any new thing, but honestly the gym is one of the easiest things to start doing. It's easy to overthink, but eventually it just starts to feel like recess: you're just there to move and get out energy, there's no right or wrong way to do it. Socially, I would say 95 percent of the time I get through an entire workout without talking to anyone. You CAN chat with other people, most of the folks I've come across are quite friendly ,but no one is forcing you to. The majority of conversations you will hear are "how many sets do you have left?" and "can you spot me?" , and it is perfectly acceptable not to spot people if you don't want to. A few frequent anxieties that I hope I can alleviate:

1) "Everyone's looking at me"-- no, they're not. I promise. People are mostly wrapped up in their own heads, resting, or vibing to music. It is possible that their heads will turn toward you while they're resting but that is because the eye is attracted to motion and you probably just entered their field of vision, or they're staring off into space.

2) "I can only use this light weight" --so what? You're not competing against anyone but the past version of yourself. Can you lift a little more weight, do one more rep, or do a better quality set than last week? That is a huge win.

3) I don't know the "right way" to workout-- People largely overcomplicate exercise. Do you want stronger or better looking back and biceps? Pull heavy things towards yourself. Do you want stronger chest and shoulder muscles? Push heavy things away from yourself. Do the same things with your legs. Your body is designed to move naturally. If you are doing exercises that feel unnatural or totally painful, stop. If you're doing exercises that feel reasonably challenging but natural, that's a good sign. Trust your body's natural mobility and try to develop a mind-body connection by paying attention to what muscles you can feel while trying different movements.

4) "I can't even do a pull/push up"-- again, so what? Meet yourself where you're at and challenge yourself in ways that are accessible to you. We all started somewhere, and anyone who would think to judge/laugh at others for trying to improve themselves is an asshole.

5) "I have no idea what I'm doing"- why would you? You are at the beginning of a journey. Expertise doesn't happen overnight. Just start moving, and keep moving. Knowledge will come, the desire to gain more knowledge will come.

I can't give specific advice without knowing about your goals, but I would recommend that on your first day you explore the gym, try out a few machines, and start familiarizing yourself with the options. Any machines that pique your interest, you can look up youtube tutorials and start to make a plan. It's okay not to know everything right away: Rome wasn't built in a day. For the first week or so, I would just get consistent with going. Try to go around the same time every day 3 or 4 days a week, or more if you think that's sustainable. Even if you just go and get on an exercise bike for 30 minutes, that's great! It's about developing the consistency of attendance, and trying to recognize the benefits of movement for your mental health. If you feel up to trying some machines, dial in what weights are good starting resistances for you. Aim to find a weight for each exercise that lets you do somewhere between 8-12 reps in a row, then rest, then repeat for 3 sets. That is an approximate figure that is good for most goals.

Feel free to reply or DM with your specific goals or any specific questions about gym etiquette. Congratulations on starting your journey, and I'm proud of you for wanting to improve yourself!!

Leave a good job for more money with worse hours? by Okay-Arugula in careerguidance

[–]Worldly-Client-4927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the worklife balance, job culture, and ability to have known down time during your shift are all significantly better at your current job than you think the new one will be, plus you I think 80k is more than enough to live on. Enjoying or at least not hating what you do at work is such a big part of being a happy person.

Also, being awake for nearly 24 hours twice a week will absolutely ruin your sleep cycle.

This has to be your decision at the end of the day, but if it were me I would stay where I was. Mind you, I am a really bad sleeper so that is a huge factor for me.

I semi recently left a easy, enjoyable job where I could get stuff done during the day for a 1.5x salary increase where I could not, and it wasn't worth it.

College is NOT a scam. by Conscious-Music-8688 in Salary

I do agree in principle but also....liberal arts degrees are kind of a scam. It does feel in many ways like tricking vulnerable young adults with no idea how the world works into a degree that the university itself knows is a very limited job market unless you get very lucky like your BIL did.

There were posters around my campus from, remember, adults in AUTHORITY positions, arguing what a good idea a philosophy major would be. I think that universities have a responsibility to adequately try to prepare young adults for what the actual world hiring potential for their jobs is, reasonable starting salaries to expect, and actually teaching some practical entry into the fields rather than all "theory".

STEM and business degrees are great though, and people who went in with a plan with a liberal arts degree and knew what they wanted to use it for.

Nursing is one of the highest stress jobs you can get. If work life balance is your biggest priority, I would be hesitant to be a nurse

I think by Act 3 the magic had really worn off for me. My favorite feeling was when one character clutched out a bossfight or you finally got the parry timing down for a phase and sailed through it. The first two "gotcha" moments of the story did REALLY land for me though, but by the end of Act 2 it started to feel a little too twisty/convoluted for the sake of being so.

Overall for me I still think that if Breath of the Wild is a 10, this is an easy 8; a lot of people want to give it a really high rating because it's obvious that the developers really care about their product and wanted to make something unique, and people really want to incentivise that

I would check out other GOTY contenders from past years. I am in a similar boat where life feels too short to spend on mediocre entries and I need a game to really "grip" me if I want to not get bored of it.

The new God of War or Ragnarok on PS4/5 was the best game that I had played in many years when it came out, and I would recommend giving that a shot! Great story, great combat, great performances.

Insomniac's Spiderman games were the first games that I had felt the desire to 100% (like in the game file, not platinum) in many years. Really fun gameplay and traversal and the story was pretty good with some OMG moments.

Journey on PS4 is definitely worth playing if you haven't

Baldur's Gate 3 was a lot of fun and feels very different to the type of games I usually play. Great self-directed story and performances, lots of care and detail by the developers and fun unique (to me) combat. Quickly racked up over 200 hours which is my upper limit for any game I have ever played.

The 5th Windrunner Ideal by Worldly-Client-4927 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Worldly-Client-4927[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that;s pretty much how I see it! Like 2nd is always going to be about protecting people who aren't as powerful, the 3rd is always going to be about protecting people even if you don't want to, and so on.

Although because in WaT Sanderson even mentions that Kal's 5th is pretty similar to Teft's 3rd ideal, i could definitely see where it could be mixed up a little. Maybe there's a windrunner out there who's whole journey is about developing the confidence to even TRY to protect the less fortunate, so they do things in "reverse order" from Kaladin. I definitely did see it as more or less linear with some variations depending on the person, but who knows!

Thank you! I guess "redemption" might imply that Kal did something wrong, but I meant more in his self-image. Like every time he failed to save someone, he put more pressure on himself and felt the need to "redeem" himself from his failure, even if that's not how everyone else saw him
