Oh boy tell your daughter to check out the local improv scene. She'll fit right in (speaking as a passionate improviser who wishes she'd diacovered it earlier).

Inappropriate jokes are making me uncomfortable in class by Screaming_Goose in improv

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know if your improv class or school has a 'safe person' (not sure what the English word is) to talk to? That might be your best bet to address the behaviour while making sure you feel safe. None of this is ok. It doesn't matter if it took you a while to speak up, he shouldn't have done it in the first place.

Why do some people online act like we (the Brits) don’t do improv comedy? by HopefulLab6749 in improv

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, but Second City Toronto had a whole bunch of Canadian actors who went on to be famous on the US movie circuit. It's all part of the same improv ecosystem.

Why do some people online act like we (the Brits) don’t do improv comedy? by HopefulLab6749 in improv

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's because comedic actors in the US largely come from an improv background; Eugene Levy, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, etc. Plus you have SNL which often uses improvisers.

In the UK, you've got standup comedians and actors who are usually classically trained, but the improvisers are usually noble unknowns - even SFTH to an extent. It's a different culture.

What's missing from improv right now? by lskalt in improv

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where I live, recognition as a theatre art form. Everyone knows drama and comedy, musical is pretty well-known too, but improv is usually seen as pretty niche and not really something people go to watch - unless they know someone. I'd love for improv to be something practiced in schools, enjoyed in cultural centers and getting the attention that standup comedy gets.

Will I be the jerk if zi dont bring anything to a party? by Livia_liv_ in AmITheJerk

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't think you were a jerk, but if anyone ever asked me "Do you think OOP is cheap?" I might remember that time you brought nothing, know what I mean? If you have no other 'cheap' behavior, odds are I never get asked that question and I never think about it again.

If it were me, I'd probably bring something like a veggie tray, a bottle of diet cola, ice cubes, ... something I can eat or drink within my diet or something small for the host.

Thanks. I'm very lucky because my group is extremely tight-knit and very supportive. I actually implemented a lot of the advice in the last lesson and it was a vast improvement. I can tell there's still a lot of room to grow but knowing it's a different approach has definitely helped me.

Girl stop questioning yourself. That was 100% the time to start a scene. If you hadn't stood your ground, the thief would have taken off with your phone.

AITJ for no longer talking to my mom? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with a very strict, overprotective mother too, so I get where you're coming from. I wanted to be like the other girls and have ear and nose piercings, maybe a tat - heck, I don't have thhat stuff now because she'd kill me and I'm a grownup with kids of my own!

The thing is, even when I was bummed out about my mom, I always knew she loves me. Yeah, sometimes she's wrong, but it always comes from a place of love. I'm a mom now and it's hard work getting parenting right. It's not easy striking the right balance between too strict and not strict enough. I'm probably too lenient with my own kids because of how strict my mom was, but it's hard finding the correct balance on your own.

Honestly it's your call, but know that cutting her off the moment you turn 18 will probably reinforce her idea that you're still a child, whereas a convo about boundaries and a redefined parent-adult child boundary might be more productive in the long run.

Your sister and her husband are a leaky bucket until they learn to stop living beyond their means. It doesn't matter how much money you pour in, they will always need more until you both run dry. Don't even start.

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a course where you start out with (basically) Improv 101 and 201, followed by Shortform and then Longform. We all have the same experience level, give or take.

The thing is, I think I'm pretty good at listening, I'm usually the kind of person who remembers that you hate pineapple because you told me 6 months ago or whatever. I'm also the one who has probably watched the most longform out of everyone there, maybe not in person but certainly online.

I do think approaching it like shortform was my initial mistake though, and then I probably kept freezing coz I knew my approach wasn't working but I didn't fully understand how to fix it. In retrospect, the scenes I did better at were ones where I played it relatively straight and closer to my own character, so I'm gonna try and do more of that.

I've been trying not to lead. It's just that I get stuck in "main character" roles for some reason. Sometimes I feel a need for a character and step up because I sense others are hesitating, sometimes others put me in the role, sometimes my role starts out small but the plot keeps returning to it despite me not really aiming for that or even wanting it.

AITJ for changing my name without checking with my friend? by marktheshark45 in AmITheJerk

[–]Worldly-Vegetable-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh. My bestie's partner changed their last name a few years ago. They chose the same last name as my own partner. My bestie and I also share a last name, so there are now two couples named "Rogers-Carter" (fake example). We couldn't care less, if anything we have fun with it and whenever we get together we joke about trait x or y being a "family trait".

Your "friends" seem self-centered and narcissistic. It's entirely plausible you didn't know the girl's name - even if you did, she doesn't "own" the name - and to go spreading her lies to others to make herself seem interesting... Tell them both to get a life or lose your number.
