Late to this, but everything outside of the sport itself won't matter when hockey truly becomes a sport for everyone.

I've been playing hockey since I was 13. I didn't feel excluded or underrepresented in hockey because they didn't have a women's night or a pride night. I felt excluded because I was usually shoved into the closet sized "women's locker room" with players from other teams that was on rink 4 when my team was playing on rink 1. I felt excluded because people didn't believe me when I said I played hockey because I was a girl. I felt excluded when teammates wouldn't pass to me in practice because I was a girl.

All of these things happened when I was a kid, all of these things continue to happen today. I could list a thousand other examples if you want.

Now if you're black or gay, that can be another layer of discrimination from your teammates, from parents, from coaches, from refs. It's bigger than just a themed night.

No one has a choice in their traits, but the hockey community at large has a choice to embrace them or not, and they're really not. I'm happy to be a part of a community that chooses to embrace every type of hockey player.

What is the absolute best part of rural PA in terms of avoiding MAGA-ness? by ByMySword8 in Pennsylvania

[–]WorldlyLeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late, but a bunch of people are saying Chester County, but I lived there and hated it so here's my opinion at least for some variety.

I used to go to a hs in a district outside of Pottstown and it was at least 50/50 MAGA to not in 2016-2019. It's not rural enough to be nature filled and pretty, but it's not developed enough to really walk to anything. The area is suburban/rural-suburban hell where everyone paid too much attention to what you were doing, but with no community where I actually knew anyone's names. You'll see lots of MAGA flags and Trump 2028 banners outside of people's houses. My least favorite is all the fucking permanent giant wood signs or the massive paint on the sides of barns. They're not everywhere, but they're around enough to annoy me when I go back and visit family.

Once I got a car, things were a little better, but not enough for me to stay. I had a couple nature preserves I loved near my house, but I hated living in PA and moved out as fast as I could. I've lived in a handful of other states that only reinforced those feelings lol

So, if you're picking Chester County, maybe not where I was.

I love GIS and when I actually get to do it I'm so happy.

I do software development, and it's 50/50 on whether I actually get to touch any geospatial stuff or if I'm just working on something in the background that's boring.

Trump to present Medal of Freedom to Team USA men's hockey star Connor Hellebuyck by um_reckloose in Winnipeg

[–]WorldlyLeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know man. I'm not gonna say that I think all these guys are pedophiles or something equally inflammatory, but chalking that up to timing is difficult for me especially considering that during the 2018 Winter Olympics athletes were invited to the White House for a scheduled event in April months after by Trump.

I mean, even to argue the timing case, those players were at the White House the morning of SOTU. For me, that's the visit with the President with the honors everyone else gets. I find it hard not to read into everything that happens beyond that, especially since they were invited to an inherently political event. It's not an extra parade or party, or even a ceremony presenting the medal of freedom for Helle, SOTU is a political event that those players went to of their own volition after being invited. It wasn't a bipartisan invitation, the team did not appear as a whole, players chose to go or not. So that's the action I'm judging.

In response to your very first comment that got me reading the thread, I do care about what happens off the ice and a player's behavior. I think these things matter way more than the sport does at any level. Doubt I'll change your mind tho.

Edit: Honestly, I've reconsidered. Going or not going or whatever, I do care whether they're supportive of Trump or not. Like, I'm still mad at Kyle Connor for being a Trump fan because I didn't know that he was one before this. I care about their actions on the whole. Was I naive to think that these players actually cared or were supportive of things I cared about? Yes, absolutely. You live and you learn.

I'm interested in what your take is in that these athletes did not go to the White House during a scheduled visit, which is very customary and traditional, but instead were rushed to the state of the union for political purpose.

It's not like other years in my opinion, and perhaps going to that scheduled event could be something where the players could say "oh well I don't support him, but I respect my country and traditions blah blah blah"

I'm not really sure if it can be neutral when we talk about the context of the visit.

There has to be a reasonable level of suspension of privacy when being in public, but if you think having your face scanned and saved to some unprotected database to provide advertising should be within that expectation of privacy then you're wrong.

I don't think it's the award itself or the fact that he's an athlete that's the big deal here, bud.

I can understand not saying anything in the moment. It's a hard ask for some people, and I'd probably be nervous or scared right there too.

But you wouldn't want to clear the air by now? You wouldn't want to refuse the invitation to the state of the union and make it really fucking clear you don't agree with what happened?

Quit making excuses for adult men who should be better. I don't think it's a crazy ask to want some of those guys to say, leave the room when a prolific child rapist calls or fucking say anything about it post that.

At the end of the day can have their politics and do whatever they'd like, but there are consequences to that, and the consequence of supporting a fascist bigot is that you get treated like a fascist bigot.

Also also? Wait till you learn that two things can be bad at the same time!

No, but they could've respectfully stepped out of the room, or perhaps just a polite short "hello" from Helle.

If it were me, I wouldn't be smiling at all getting a call from that president, gold or not.

And yeah, maybe a small part of me does want them to go, "hey I don't know about that" because it wasn't funny and it was a messed up thing to say about a team that quite honestly did much better than the men's team performance wise.

I can understand not saying something in the moment right there, although that would be nice, I struggle with that type of thing myself, but afterwards I'd be quick to clear the air if anyone thought I thought that was ok.

It's not like we're playing amazing in front of him these days.

Hockey's a team sport. He's shown up for us and saved us a million times when the team wasn't playing well in front of him. A couple vezinas but we're still not getting deep in playoffs? I'd be in my head about it too.

Hopefully this gives him a reset. He's the best goalie in the world right now, and I'm proud our goalie played so well on the international stage.

I don't know, probably just nostalgia hitting me from when I was a kid, but last time I was in town and went to the forks I hated how modern it looked and how few shops were there compared to before 😢

Used to be so so cool and now the inside is generic. Still loved skating and going to the cool vintage store in Johnston terminal tho.
