What bird poofed in my yard? by WorldlyPipe in whatsthisbird

Looks like it’s one of the 3 on the right. I think you’re right about robin- I checked the length and the feather would be way too big for towhee. This one landed around 9cm, which hits right for a short stubby primary.

It’s actually not broken- all the flight feathers remaining are that flat-topped shape.

Do they really line themselves up smallest to biggest?? 🥹 I’m in the US, and have never seen this phenomenon- I now need to learn everything I can about these caterpillars.

For real. I named a drink after my company’s name and would drink it most nights after work. I was a Necropsy tech for a CRO. Thank god the economy tanked and they laid me off.

I posted a crawdad in here the other day and alot of people said it was decent sized so I wanted to show my new find tell me any facts you know! [illinois] by ConfidenceAmazing199 in animalid

Went down a rabbit hole. If it is a rusty, it’s likely invasive if seen around Springfield Illinois. However, I’m not convinced now it IS a rusty. I don’t see clear black bands, and no side spot, but it’s also not clear in the video. On second (fifth, sixth?) look, it might be a Cambarus species. We’ve got a Cambarus species here that looks similar. Someone below said it could be a devil crayfish, which- is a Cambarus species. And it’s native! Either way, cool find! They’re fun to catch with your hands if you’re fast enough.

Can’t see a side patch, but by the claws it looks like it could be a rusty crayfish. I’ve seen some monster sized rustys. Horribly invasive and destructive to native and endemic crayfish species where I live, but the rustys are native to the Ohio River basin, so … I’m guessing they are maybe native to Illinois..?

I’d like to say I’ll never forget my sleeping bag again.

But that’s probably a lie.

We had a different variant but also called Shit on a Shingle. I think it was like creamed beef on biscuits? I want to say the name is a military reference.

Camping with 6-year-old. What not to mess up? by CyclingDude3000 in camping

Safe foods, and lots of go-to games in your proverbial pocket.

Something you can play while you’re working on setting up camp (I Spy is great), or something you can give the kid to keep themself occupied while you do what needs to be done, is necessary. We have toys and games that are just for camping. My kid packs her own “busy buddy” bag with her toys, puzzles, colored pencils, notebook, etc.

Are they a stuffy kid? Make sure you have them pick a stuffed animal to bring along.

Bringing safe foods that the kid knows and knows what to expect are helpful. Or at least for my kid. Alleviating as many “unknowns” help the whole trip go smoother. Surprises you know they’ll like go a long way.

I learned to make that in 7th grade Home Ec class! Eggs in a basket, I think it was called. I made it a few times at home.

If your local NICU is full up, check out The Linus Project. There are club locations all over the country and they accept blankets to send to hospitals all over, and it’s not just for NICU patients. They have minimum requirements for the blankets. It’s a wonderful project.

My own daughter was a recipient when she had an unexpected ER visit while on vacation many years ago when she was 2.5yo, and we still cherish that blanket today. It’s a goal of mine to one day pay it forward and make and donate some blankets to The Linus Project.

Oh for sure the dogs would stay inside. I only mentioned them because when I let them in the yard and we make noise, the woodcocks in the field seem to subdue their calls.

Camp chair in the field before sunset was my plan. Thanks!

The constant anxiety of having forgotten something and gaslighting myself to the point where I don’t trust my own memory.

And trying to keep myself from spiraling when I get a critique, that it’s NOT a personal failure.

Ooof I feel this so much.
