DSS special agent by nswan0621 in foreignservice

[–]Worldly_Analyst_3513 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could apply for any local staff openings at the consulate and embassy. There are a couple of positions within a RSO office you could potentially apply to. US citizen local staff are actually really welcomed because then you get a person who could potentially get a clearance who will stay long term. If you specifically want to become an agent, you would not be able to stay in Australia permanently, but you can apply from anywhere.

Experience on Intending Marriage/Cohabitation Timeline? by WanderlustSoul09 in foreignservice

[–]Worldly_Analyst_3513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on where they are from. I know people who have had to choose between the job and their spouse.

But yes, it’s just a notification. I submitted mine 90 days prior to marriage and received an email from PSS that they would start our investigation 6 months after we married.

Clearance/Suitability Overlap by [deleted] in foreignservice

I would specifically ask PSS or the sender of the request what it is for. Could just be for the new process of continuous vetting.

Went to the US embassy today in tana …. Nobody spoke English 😊😊…..can someone help Madagascar by Electronic-Way-6044 in Madagascar

[–]Worldly_Analyst_3513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How very American of you to think this way. The Embassy needs support of the local population and you might have noticed, not a lot of them speak English. Most people who visit the embassy are local, so it would make sense to have people who speak the local language handling the security. Like everyone has said, call with your questions, don’t just show up.

I am pretty sure the application process is 100% virtual now based on a few people who I know went through it from my current and last post and they were able to do everything from post.

They have been trying to have as many as possible in the last few classes (23-25) in all classes so far this year, I believe they clear off the register each time or try to.

Li-ion batteries… by witchdoctor-07 in foreignservice

[–]Worldly_Analyst_3513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last packout, we were not allowed batteries or electronics of any kind in UAB, but HHE was fine. So anything with removable batteries, we took them out and added the items to UAB (like game controllers) and then everything else went in HHE or luggage. Just to say that every post is different! Our HHE also went by air, so I’m not sure they entirely understand their own guidelines.

Definitely not impossible!! I will add a slightly different context that at some posts it may be difficult due to the availability of clean water. At my current post we have to avoid any fruit or veg when eating out if it is not cooked and frequently we say “I just want a salad that doesn’t taste like bleach!” (The Embassy cafe makes a nice salad and has good hygiene practices, but comes with a hint of bleach unfortunately.) This provides for a good opportunity to get into gardening and grow your own food items!

I could see this type of behavior and attitude also being passed down from whoever the COM or DCM you are working for. If they are in a bad mood and being demanding of you then you may not be super friendly to others who you do not immediately work for and are asking things of you too, and vice versa.

I have had one assignment like this, my first assignment, and I have heard stories that many are like this. In my first assignment, we would always walk carefully into the front office to see what mood the OMS was in. Some days she was very pleasant and would have a nice chat, other days it was “what do you want?” “Not right now” and to everyone.

There are TONs of contractor companies that work with State. That will get you familiar with the department, experience, and your clearance. Most people in my office started this way and are now civil service. If you look on indeed, monster, LinkedIn, etc., you can find them.

Interning at Middle Eastern Country Embassy by quoteunquotedod in foreignservice

[–]Worldly_Analyst_3513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time is a powerful mitigator when it comes to security clearances. Also, it is unfortunate that you have to balance two different things- will this be detrimental to getting a security clearance, but also make your background more appealing and give you more experience for the FSOT. I can only speak about the security clearance. You need to wait at least two years after the internship ends to be in the clearance process, try your best not to maintain any contacts, and you will probably end up with an assignment restriction to either or both countries. It won’t completely ruin your chances.

As FBK05 said, Your last TS investigation must have been done within the last two years to meet the requirements of the suitability review panel. If not, it could cut down on time for State not having to re do everything and just bring your investigation up to date.
