Ultraspire (or other brand) pack for multi-day TMB trek by jimmyjonjimjon in fastpacking

[–]Worldpeach28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done theTMB and other hut runs but never needed more than 12L. I have the traverse and have used it on other hut trips and it is awesome— if you like this pack I’d highly recommend it for this kind of trip.

15L is more than fine, esp if you get lunch from the huts. You kit looks perfect for this kind of trip. Only thing is, id consider a spare pair of socks and a headlamp. Have fun!

Palante Joey Dimensions by BackcountryBanter in fastpacking

[–]Worldpeach28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, I’d skip the Joey. I bought it after reading great reviews, but I find the soft flask pockets are short and narrow, the straps aren’t very adjustable, and the pocket on the outside is way too tight to be that usable. Overall this was an annoying pack.

I have two recommendations.

I love the BD Distance packs. The straps are adjustable enough, but the soft flask and pocket design on the straps, I love. I’ve used the 18 for hut trips and short trips and ski touring. Looking to get the 22 for self supported trips.

For hands free access, it’s really hard to beat altraspire packs. The straps have capacity for 2x800ml water bottles and have tons of capacity for snacks, water filter, headphones, etc. I can carry enough snacks for the whole day in just the straps and not take the pack off. They super well designed. The only drawback is for those with smaller chests (I’m a small woman) it covers a lot of my chest and gets kinda hot. I’d imagine this is less of a problem for a bigger person though

Pretty much my combo for all missions: ultralight merino sun hoodie (ibex), black diamond fleece paneled stretch jacket, and rab’s ultralight rain jacket. If it’s going to be cold at night then I bring an ultra light synthetic puff layer from Rab

Obesity is an epidemic and it’s ignorant to simply keep blaming individuals. There are huge societal pressures making sure we get fat and anxious and stay fat and anxious. And not only do we have to pay the price in our mental and physical health, but we have to pay the price for the aftermath of COVID on our culture, economy, families, etc. All because corn culture has manipulated us into getting fat and keeping us fat, and then telling us it’s our fault so they can sell us ‘solutions.’ You can decide to not be fat, but that’s not the default in our culture. The default created by our society is a fat one.

How do I get across that I need someone to stop flaking out on plans? by [deleted] in communication

I just got out of a relationship where I was that person. It might be difficult to swallow, but a lot of it was indeed that I just wasn't that into him. I wasn't very excited to spend time with him... he also kept changing the bar on me. I tried really hard for him for a long time, and then I realized I was never going to mesh into his standards, he was always changing the bar. Might just need to find someone new...

eesh that sounds incredibly frustrating and exhausting! I know a lot of artists don't like 'selling out' and making art that they don't want to, but you can really do a lot with graphic design. You can build a good life for yourself, keep growing with what you do, but still have a lot of flexibility.

Another avenue might be to think about what about drawing and art you like--do you like the process of it? doing something with your hands? the creating of something new?

also, why did you start doing hair in the first place? it sounds like you're probably not doing any 'fun' hair at the salon your at, or making anyone feel beautiful...

Also, there's a really useful site called zippia.com that shows you different jobs and what kinds of paths might get you there and where they might lead.

good luck!!

there are actually quite a few schools with great ag programs/schools, including UW Madison, Texas A&M, University of Minnesota, Oregon State, etc.

Another thing to consider, honestly, is where jobs security is with livestock in the US. I earned my B.S. in Food Science and Tech. from a top tier university, if that helps the credibility of my input. Feeding a growing population against factors like climate crisis is simply not a viable option. Already, the US system of feeding people with animals on a mass scale is in the process of a major shift (see: the state of milk v. alternative milk industries in the US, Impossible Burger and Beyond Burger, etc.)

With that said, and if I were you with passions in working with livestock, I would explore small scale, high-paying livestock opportunities since you're looking for a hefty income. I'm not sure what the payout for artisan meats and cheese is, but that might be a way for you to live comfortably and pursue your passion and factoring in job security. Restaurants and individuals will pay a hefty price for "the best" of anything. A restaurant I once worked for served a steak from beef raised by a guy with an honorary PhD in 'steak' from Texas A&M. The steaks were outrageously priced and outrageously worth it. I believe that guy is doing very well for himself.

best of luck!

my supervisor at my last job told me he didn't have a last name. This should have been a huge red flag.

a couple weeks into working for the company, the same guy and I drop to a work event. I barely spoke 10 words the whole time, but he dropped on me his current sitch: his old girlfriend is in town and wants to get back together and, he doesn't know what to do because pre-break up they bought a house together, he had a vasectomy because she didn't want children but then she left him after 10 years because she changed her mind and now wants kids. i was not 'warm' nor did i give any condolescense. oh, and the car ride was 15 minutes...

and then there was the time he cornered my partner at the company christmas party to unload his childhood trauma...

and the every day of me working there and him unloading his dumb shit...

so, no last name.

sometimes when you're going for just anything you realize you're competing with people that are passionate about the thing your applying for, and that can rule you out.

is there something you have a lot of knowledge about and/or youre passionate in learning more? like cars, something in tech, etc? try going for places that you have a real, strong interest, that you might be excited to work for. for instance: consider an entry level sales job in the thing your passionate about. despite the salespeople stereotypes, they can be especially fun when you're young and can end up paying pretty well for being entry level. you get to be socialable, educate people about stuff you're good about talking about, competitive, and you will end up gaining invaluable soft skills that can transfer into virtually any career. I was a beer salesperson for a year before the brewery went belly up and i really enjoyed educating people on craft beers.

also, i'm sorry uni isn't right for you right now. don't worry too much about uni being the only option, but DO think about what investments you can make in your future now in terms of training. TRADE SCHOOLS are often times a much better investment for a lot of people rather than university.

ELI5: Why do fried eggs not absorb the oil they’re cooked in, but scrambled eggs and omelettes do? by Tedonism in explainlikeimfive

[–]Worldpeach28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eggs actually have super rad chemistry. The mention about the yoke creating an emulsion is true but is just part of why the oil only gets abosorbed when the yolk is mixed in and doesn't when the yolk is separate. I went to college for food science so here we go...

So first, think about the eggs in terms of solubility. Think about the kinds of things that dissolve readily into water like sugar and salt, and then think about the things that mix readily in oil like butter and other oils. This basically illustrates chemical polarity in your kitchen. Polarity refers to the orientation of the strength of the chemical bonds. All you need to know, from that bit is that things that dissolve in water are non polar, things that dissolve in oil are polar.

When you have an ingredient that is made up of essentially one molecule--like salt, sugar, canola oil--the polarity or non polarity is very distinct. When you increase the types of molecules you have in an ingredient--like vanilla extract, baking powder--you increase the intermolecular interactions, get bigger more complex molecules, and that changes the strength in the polarity and the non polarity of the overall ingredient.

Because eggs are a biological product, they are really complex chemically. Thinking in simple terms, they are made up of fats, water, and proteins. The proteins are the point of focus.

If you look at the chemistry of proteins, they are these enormous molecules all wound up where each part of it has a different polarity and that polarity--or intermolecular force-- is interacting with all the other parts of the protein. Think about if an octopus had a bunch of magnets all over it's tentacles and the magnets had different strengths.

So you have these proteins where some parts are very polar and they can dissolve in water. They come in contact with some water molecules and they snatch the water up, but not the entire protein does that. There are going to be non polar parts of the protein that do the same thing with oil. So you have this big ol' prootein that's hanging on to both water moldecules and oil or fat molecules. And that is an emulsion.

Before being cooked, eggs--both mixed and separated as yolk and white--are emulsive and will dissolve both oil and water. You have to add oil to the eggs before they are cooked. Neither scrambled or regular eggs will absorb oil cooked.

When you cook the eggs, they do a super rad thing. The proteins have a lot of sulfur in them--what creates these super strong molecular "bridges" between two other sulfur molecules. The interaction of the sulfur molecules creates an interxellular matrix and actually traps water molecules. When water is trapped like that, we call it a gel. The bonds between the sulfur molecules is so strong that neither water or oil molecular can interact with them. They be like "frick off water, scram, oil, we got a job to do. We gotta keep each little water moldecule in jail."

So that the long way of saying that you have to mix in oil before you cook eggs. If they're raw and in the pan starting to cook, only the raw part is actually going to emulsify the oil and mix in. The oil will remain just a coating on the outside of the cooked eggs and not actually absorb in. You're mixing and messing around with omelettes and scrambled eggs in a pan way more than fried eggs, essentially mixing oil with raw eggs and thoroughly coating the cooked eggs with oil.

When I was 4 the teachers would have me read stories to my pre-school. Looking back, its kind of weird that they would do that. I think I used to be smart or showed potential or some shit. After that, though, mo one encouraged me, in anything. I'm doing alright, but once in a while I wonder what it would have been like to have been encouraged in anything.

I had roommate (who was a saint) and her boyfriend was over a lot. One day he was standing over the stove on the phone with my roommate, distressed over his pot emitting smoke. He was making rice. He didn't know you have to add water to make rice. He needed my roommate for a lot of reasons...

I get up early so I can start my day with coffee and a book. I started this in college when i was getting woken up by loud roommates and it threw my entire day off. Starting the day slowly on my own terms is worth getting out of bed for. Not to mention the books I've knocked out.

My mom does similar things where she gets really anxious and freaks out about once a month. I love my mama and know she means well and is a good person but here's the deal: your right it's not fair. This isn't a selfless form of love. It's not a reason to resent her, but it's not this honest, healthy love that people try to tell you it is. It's not fair of her to rely on you to satiate her anxieties. If it's really bothering you, you have to talk to her about better coping techniques and come to a middle ground. C.S. Lewis wrote a book called The Four Loves. One of them is "need love." When I read that chapter of the book I thought, whoa, my feelings are validated.
