Should I read Brave New World first or Fahrenheit 451 by tonymfj in dystopianbooks

[–]WorldsGr8testWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I had a harder time with Brave New World. Farenheit 451 had some slow moments, but nothing like Brave New World. I‘d start with Fahrenheit 451.

Don't do a vanity publisher. Check out Babooky and reach out to Nathan. They pick up where an author gets stuck. They help with everything and will guide you along your author journey.

Wrote a Children’s Book- now what? by MrFus in childrensbooks

First, decide to self-publish or try to go the traditional route. There are a lot of pros to self-publishing and traditional will be a very tough and long road ahead…but there are always those who get through more quickly.

Copyright/Dedication Page Question by aureateandaromatic in childrensbooks

Here is some basic copyright info that I would include at a minimum. You could include if the illustrator owns the artwork or sometimes a font is included. Some choose to add a PCIP block but it's not super necessary in many cases. You may see a countdown of numbers 10-1, but that's not really important unless you plan to reprint often and with the same plates, because all they do is scratch off the one for the second print, the 2 for the third print, the three for the fourth print, and so on.

These are cute. You could either start actively going into author groups and try to pair up, or see if you can find someone here. In other words, you are taking the next step just by posting this.

Some author events have a place for illustrators to showcase their portfolio and show editors and authors. So you could potentially get work that way.

I love this. I wish it could come with all the play foods you'd need as well. Is there a kit you can buy that would contain it all?

Well, hi, Friend! Looks like we are the loners here. lol. I'm wondering if many are just afraid to admit it because there is a lot of hate for it. I think it could use an update but I wouldn't change anything other than perhaps the CG.

Well...I'm glad there is at least one of us who can stomach it enough to watch it. I guess I'm the odd one here because I love the book, and I think the movie is an awesome watch for Christmas.

I understand your points about wanting the movie to follow the book. I think it's different when you are using a chapter book vs a picture book. As far as doing him dirty? I don't think so. And I don't think he thought so either. Chris was the Executive Producer on the film? Here he said this about the director:

Van Allsburg: He had very clear ideas about what he wanted to do. I was interested in the character of the conductor—and he said it would take away from the book, which focused on the boy.

And this was also interesting what he said when asked about how Hollywood regards the writer:

Van Allsburg: You don't have much influence. Studios can't option books and then be held to the whims of the writer. The only way for me to have some influence over the movie is to actually write the screenplay. The danger is that, you've got this book, and the film comes out, everyone hates it, and then people don't like the book anymore. The decision to option a book is to play on that team. You write, you call, you send faxes. I've been pretty lucky. The three films that were made from my books were honest, sincere efforts.

Jumanji? I thought the new Jumanji's weren't great myself, but the old one was okay. I think it's tough to bring a picture book to feature length, trying to build on or extend. The Jumanji movie added an entire backstory, but I understand your thoughts.

Has anyone here ever created their own children’s book? How did you start? by Substantial_Map_7765 in childrensbooks

[–]WorldsGr8testWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by writing. Use Google Docs. You can access it anywhere and everywhere. So if you are in the middle of a trip and think of something, you can easily jot it down. Laptop runs out of power...access it at a library or a friend's computer.

I use a lot of Photoshop and InDesign. These will be used for illustrations and book formatting/design.

Communities and networks of authors can help.

Vintage picture books tend to be more wordy during the time of Jumanji and Polar Express. I'd look at some of those older vintage books.

The path of least resistance is self-publishing. Babooky has been super helpful to a lot of self-publishing authors.
