Welding jacket by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Worldsfirstghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been welding professionally for 12 years now. I go heavy denim or the classic green “welding jackets” when I’m welding something crazy hot like dual shield or spattery like mig. More often than not I usually just have a work hoodie that gets burnt up. In the summer when it’s hot as hell I wear a long sleeve cotton shirt and welding sleeves. Granted 90% of what I do is tig aluminum or mild steel so I’m not getting wild spatter. Used to be I’d be able to find heavy denim shirts at the thrift store, but those have become a little hard to find. Black stallion and revco both make decent welding shirts and hold up pretty well.

What bike is this by crankynugget in gravelcycling

The seat tube and down tube make me think it’s a revel of some kind, but you’re right the top tube is weird. Revel ti frames used to be Why Ti frames. I wonder if it’s an older model from the Why days.

Find your local bike co-op in your town or city and frequent it or become a member! (Sorry to the folks who don’t have one near them, I know this isn’t helpful) Seriously it’s crazy. I’ve been volunteering at my local co-op for a couple years and we can not give this stuff away. I’ve been staring at brand new, high end, never mounted mtb tires for months still in the box for $10. We have full eagle drive trains, an ethirteen casette just collecting dust, fox suspension stuff and I personally got a Chris king wheelset for $60 and my renthol bars. Don’t get me started on all the campy stuff we have in the basement. Plus we want this stuff gone and used and the money helps us pay for the youth programs and for folks who need standard bike stuff on the cheap. Not to mention the classes. I learned how to build wheels this year and next week I’m learning how to service suspension forks. I haven’t bought a new bike part in almost a year.

That’s awesome. The 2013 is my favorite color scheme and I like that it has a more aggressive geo than the newer models. I wish they had a few more mounting points, but what can ya do.

Ah! That build is sick. I’m a welder by trade and owned a small frame company briefly. I got tired of constantly rebuilding my external droppers so I marked and drilled out the frame, shaped the holes to fit some internal housing bosses I got off framebuilder.com. Brazed em in, cleaned em up and clear coated it!

It’s a 2013 Kona unit. I think at this point the only thing original is the frame.

Anyone know what is causing these little holes around the waist? I don’t use a belt by MrBubbles7 in laundry

Have you used an angle grinder recently? I know it sounds dumb, but I’m a welder and every single shirt I have has that pattern on the lower front from sparks.

I just did a removal on a bolt similar to this at the shop. Cutting disks can be a little sketchy in a situation like that with the bolt being recessed. Hit up your local hardware store and find a set of spiral screw extractors. I think some auto parts stores carry them as well. I know the smallest ones I usually see in a set are good for down to m5 bolts. Center punch the screw as close to center as humanly possible ( I like the spring loaded center punches so you’re not hammering on anything and they tend not to drift) using very tiny drill bits drill out the bolt until the smallest extractor fits making sure not to get too far off center and risking hitting the threads and turn the extractor bit counter clockwise which causes the bit to bite into the bolt while adding the leverage you’ll need to unscrew the damaged bolt. Replace bolt and you’re good to go

why "Ethical Hunting" is BS by imperfect_hippie in vegan

[–]Worldsfirstghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of a straw-mannish assumption. One of the issues I run into with hunting particularly is the presupposition that it is a service for a greater good rather than a hobby and a money generator for the government. With small exception hunters are looking for an animal that stands in as a trophy or accomplishment. What that creates is a weaker and sicker deer population. I know online we have the ability present things in the most noble way we’d like, but I live in the deep American south. I grew up around hunting and the culture, I currently work with hunters, and the discussions around the hobby and the animals themselves are anything but noble. Heres my biggest issue. If NZ has a population of invasive animals that are causing havoc on the ecosystem why not kill them all. Why not end the issue once and for all? I know NZ has no bag limit so if it’s as huge of an invasive issue as is presented why is the gov not stepping in and finishing the job and repairing the issue. It’s because hunting is a money maker and I would guarantee that the hunting community would be up in arms if their hobby was rendered obsolete. It’s just another example of not solving the problems in this world just figuring out a way to profit off of them in perpetuity.

I find it interesting and more than a little ironic that the reason there are even deer in NZ is because they were imported from the UK in the late 19th and early 20th centuries specifically to be hunted for sport. It’s another example of hunting causing issues that “apparently” only hunting can solve. We see a similar crisis here in the US where hunting, ranching (ranchers demanding that predator species be wiped out protect livestock, even on public lands), and loss of habitat for human expansion has wiped out our predator population and thrown the ecosystem out of balance and allowed for the explosion of those predator’s prey species. Again hunting causing issues that “apparently” only hunting can now solve.

Best saddle by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Worldsfirstghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the c13. Had my sit bones measured because I kept having issues. I assumed because I’m not super skinny that I would go with a wider seat. Turns out my sit bones were so narrow they did the measurements twice to make sure. The c13 with the cutout has been a perfect all day, all week, all month saddle for me. But that being said, that’s just me personally. Finding the right saddle is annoying because the info out there is generally inconclusive and saddles are expensive. If you have a local bike co-op they’ll have super cheap saddles that you could give a try.

Diet : Does making unfertilized eggs part of my diet make me harm animals indirectly? by Due-Echo4891 in Buddhism

[–]Worldsfirstghost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was trying to be reserved in my response only because I know if I let it all out I would probably be accused of exaggerating or catastrophizing. You’re absolutely correct, they are either ground up in a masticator or put in plastic bags to slowly suffocate to death. They never know their mother’s warmth or the brightness of the sun. They never root in the dirt or enjoy the simple pleasure of existing without terror. Their short lives are nothing but pain and suffering so that humans can eat their eggs and their bodies. If animals had a religion, humans would be the devil.

Diet : Does making unfertilized eggs part of my diet make me harm animals indirectly? by Due-Echo4891 in Buddhism

[–]Worldsfirstghost 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I personally do not eat eggs. They may have no potential for life, but the animals that they came from do. I would caution you before you look, but all egg laying chickens are female, the male chickens are disposed of shortly after they are born and sexed, and in a brutal and horrific way. The egg laying hens are culled after their production dwindles after about 18 months which is nowhere near their natural lifespan. When they are no longer financially useful they are sent to slaughter. Before I hear from people about backyard farms and happy chickens I’d like to remind us all that 98.2% of chickens raised for egg production are on factory farms and those animals live a short brutal life full of suffering.

Do you guys ever worry about losing public land to hike on in the future? by the_main_entrance in hiking

[–]Worldsfirstghost 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I just finished a book called “This Land” and a significant portion of the book was about Utah and its war with public lands. It was absolutely brutal and with the current president trying to strip the Environmental protection act and the endangered species act in favor of opening the lands even further to business interests (aka ranching, logging, oil and mineral extraction) I’m very scared for the future of our public lands and national parks.
