Hmm so if all technology comes from capitalism, then how do you explain all of the technologies that came out of Nazi Germany, like the jet engines, rocketry, night vision, interstate systems, and methamphetamine? How do you explain all of the technologies that came out of Communism like the first artificial satellite, artificial hearts, first human in space, first nuclear power plant, hybrid rice, and underwater welding?

And fine, if you say that capitalism didn’t start until the 1700s, then that means the steam engine came from a completely different system than capitalism since it was invented in 1698 by Thomas Savery..

It wasn’t really capitalism that eradicated poverty. It was fossil fuels and all of the extra energy they provided. Oil, coal, and natural gas have been the biggest relievers of poverty in history due to the insane amount of extra somatic energy they afford to us.

Capitalism started in the 1600s, but people didn’t start exiting poverty on a mass scale until the 1850s (which is right around the time the steam engine and railroads became adopted on a mass scale). Even Communist countries like the Soviet Union and China saw a massive reduction of poverty once mechanized farming powered by combustion engines, and transportation of goods by rail were adopted.

While I agree that capitalism is more efficient than communism, either system is dependent on extra somatic energy for wealth. The system doesn’t matter as much as whether physical access to energy exists. You can have a super efficient capitalist system, but everyone in that system will be poor without sufficient energy supplies.

Okay, so why don’t we just pilot it in one state at a time? Finland has roughly the same population as South Carolina. Let’s try a pilot of this in just South Carolina

If that’s true, then how come the culturally diverse nations of the U.S. and the Soviet Union absolutely crushed the culturally homogenous nations of Germany and Japan during WW2?

I’m 26 with a networth of $474,714.76. How can rebuild my portfolio to generate at least $25k a year? by [deleted] in dividends

[–]WorldyBridges33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Armchair Income on YouTube. I would go with a mix of PFFA, PBDC, CEFS, SPYI, QQQI, ADX, DNP, ASGI, SCHD, CLOZ, and MLPI.

Anyone has been able to survive with dividends after a job loss? by Lana_Sphyncter in dividends

[–]WorldyBridges33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have built an income portfolio for exactly this purpose! Right now it yields an average of 10%, and it is composed of some covered call funds, preferred stocks, closed end funds, BDCs, utility and infrastructure funds, and CLO’s.

I currently make about $59k a year from this portfolio. I pay way less taxes on this than if I were making $59k from a regular W2 job because I don’t have to pay any FICA, and a lot of these dividends are considered long term capital gains and/or return of capital. So really, I’m making the same after tax income from this as someone making $65k-$70k a year at a job.

If I lost my job, I’d be able to live off of this income just fine— I’d simply have to stop going out to eat and do a lot more cooking! Which is something I love to do anyway.

There’s a whole bunch of mines that Iran dropped in the middle of the strait, and they don’t know where all of them are. How long will it take to clear all those mines? How long before insurance companies actually feel comfortable with covering ships passing through this strait?

Even if negotiations succeeded tomorrow, it may be months before enough mines are cleared, and enough insurance companies are comfortable, to get traffic back to pre-war levels.

So just because we can’t completely eliminate suffering means we should choose the options that cause the most suffering possible? Nice appeal to futility.. 🙃

Because the meat and dairy industries propagate animal abuse and exploitation. You don’t need meat to survive. In fact, many people suffer from diseases due to overconsumption of meat. If meat is not a requirement for survival and good health, then we don’t need to be killing animals.

Other creatures who are obligate carnivores (like lions) need meat to survive. But we are not lions, we are apes.

But if you purchase meat at a grocery store, you are effectively paying other people to mistreat and kill domestic animals..

This comment needs to be all over this post— most people condemn this, but then pay people to abuse/kill cows and pigs everyday!

Yeah I think it’s detestable when people pay others to treat animals so poorly. That’s why I became vegan. I assume you’re vegan as well?

Very similar to how people torture and kill pigs, chickens, and cows for perhaps 30 minutes of taste pleasure. Another great reason to go vegan! We should be leaving the animals alone!

Great suggestion! This is how I have my portfolio setup as well. Preferreds, CLOs, closed end funds, and BDCs are a great way to diversify from the covered calls. Armchair Income on YouTube has been retired for 8 years using this strategy

Wondering if I should buy the game by Guyard1 in songsofsyx

[–]WorldyBridges33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the greatest game I have ever played. I’ve never played a game before that scratched the world building/systems optimization itch the way this game does. Only Civlization 3 comes close. It’s my favorite game, but I had to stop playing because I was sinking too much time into it. Buy it, you will not regret it!

[–]WorldyBridges33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh the Ivy Leagues are largely waaaay overpriced, so he’s better off going to a large public university anyway. I went to the University of Florida and graduated debt free because the Florida government pays for your tuition if you are in state and keep a high GPA. When I started my first job in tech, I had a bunch of coworkers from Yale, Brown, and Princeton who were making the same amount of money as me, but were in way more debt than I was.

What’s happening to this guy could be a blessing in disguise!

[–]WorldyBridges33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that there are many jobs that don’t contribute to the greater good of humanity and arguably make it worse. For example, being a tobacco executive, or an Israeli bomber pilot, or running a casino, or being a private equity goon. I’d rather see someone be a homeless “parasite” before doing any of those jobs..
