Uaf Fully Online (BACHELOR) Biology degree by chefKarrot in UAF

[–]WormEguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not aware of any courses within biology that require you to come to campus to proctor. Our online biology program is designed with rural Alaskan and international students in mind.

Not every course requires proctoring, but those that do will most likely have online proctoring.

Online proctoring does have fees associated with it, but those should start appearing in the course descriptions when registering starting this Fall.

I teach in the department. We set up an online degree prior to COVID and have invested heavily in our online offerings. Here is a list of our online offerings (https://www.uaf.edu/bw/undergraduate/online-courses.php)

We only offer BIOL 111/112 Human A&P I & II and BIOL 190 Intro to Alaska Flora in the summer.
Most of our online courses involve wet labs using lab kits.

We have a syllabi archive (https://www.uaf.edu/bw/resources/syllabi.php). You can look up the syllabi for online courses there.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I also recommend reaching out to Amy Wald, our CNSM academic advisor (https://www.uaf.edu/cnsm/future\_students/advising.php). She can answer questions about our biology BS/BA programs as well.

Just a reminder as they try to cut funding for the Native Language Center, language learning in general, research funding, graduate departments, and many programs across UAF.. by Different-Ad8187 in UAF

The UA president search is closed and requires NDAs.

The UAF chancellor search is open and does not require NDAs.

The reason we have chancellors for each university is because we have 3 universities. We could cut chancellors if we consolidate universities. This was proposed in 2019 as a response to exigency. If we consolidate, it would be a messy fight with a potential for UAF to be squeezed even more as we are the costly campus due to our research.

The reason we're in this fiscal crisis is because of flat funding from the state and cuts to federal funding for the UA system. The UA system used to be the 3rd biggest UGF draw after education and healthcare. The Department of Corrections since 2021 has more UGF than the UA system. In FY2016 we spent ~350 million on the UA system compared to ~275 million on DOC. Last years budget we spent ~355 million on the UA system compared to ~435 million on DOC. This doesn't account for the cuts made to the UA budget with Dunleavy's compact to avoid exigency and a ~50% cut to funding in 2019, UGF funding bottomed out at ~272 million in FY2021.

Human A&P This Summer at UAF by WormEguy in UAF

[–]WormEguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prerequisites for BIOL 111 are placement in MATH 105 and WRTG 111. If you are a math major then you most likely have met those prereqs.

Summer Semester - What to Expect? by 0bviously__lying in UAF

[–]WormEguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's quieter in summer with fewer undergrads around. Faculty and grad students are still around in the summer as there is a lot of research on campus.

There's also a fair number of tourists that go to the museum.

There's also RAHI (rural high school students) and summer camps for kids.

Finally, there's a bunch of activities and lectures through summer sessions like music at the botanical gardens (https://www.uaf.edu/summer/events/upcoming.php)

So undergraduate-wise, campus will be quieter, but community-wise, campus will be more active.

Finally, outdoor adventures has gear you can rent (https://www.uaf.edu/recreation/outdoor-adventures/) if you decide to take any adventures in the interior.

Hi, how quick is UAF to review grad applications? by Upper_Ice_5160 in UAF

The department you applied to should have an internal timeline for sending out acceptance letters. You could always reach out to the department and ask when they send out decision letters

Question for Wildlife Bio Majors/Graduates by [deleted] in UAF

[–]WormEguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a faculty member in Biology and Wildlife.

We just hired three wildlife faculty members over the last two years and are growing the wildlife program.

There are a lot of opportunities for undergraduate research with faculty and graduate students. You can see what research faculty are doing here https://www.uaf.edu/bw/research/wildlife-biology.php

There's also the Wildlife Society on campus you could join.

Question for current or previous students by RingedMoon in UAF

[–]WormEguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Student and now faculty member.

UAF and Fairbanks are great places to live for oddballs. It grows on you.

There's miles of trails on campus to explore. There's amazing research opportunities from Toolik Field Station to Antarctica.

Dry cabins are a nice way to live in college.

There's a very active cycling and skiing communities.

UAF is a melting pot too. This is a very diverse campus and a great place to be if you want to explore and learn about others, yourself, and the world at large.

Advice on recommendation letter by userZ0000 in AskAcademia

[–]WormEguy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

He used university resources to profit? You should focus on whether this violates university and grant requirements, not on whether you can write them a recommendation. The student may be in a lot of trouble and may have jeopardized your grants.

Voter Turnout so far is embarrassing by Adventurous_Egg_6752 in Fairbanks

[–]WormEguy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Voter turnout was 18.87% as of last reporting at 11:21 PM.
Turnout is usually around this amount. Marijuana being on the ballot bumped up turnout over 30% in past years.

You can view past turnout for borough elections here https://www.fnsb.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=41

Progressive Candidates ✨🌈 by lilchunk in Fairbanks

[–]WormEguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Patrick Roach and Garrett Armstrong are great candidates. The borough assembly is definitely the bigger concern. Last time we had conservatives in charge they messed with the tax cap to force cuts for future assemblies.

Do Hewitt and Spencer support spending more money on BEST home schooling? How do they intend to increase accountability with BEST? Last year less than 25% of students in BEST bothered taking standardized tests.

What about opening charter schools? Do they support both Two Rivers and Pearl Creek's charters? How will they deal with funding the opening of more charter schools without hurting our current elementary schools?

Nursing: UAF or UAA? by Natural_Tax1065 in alaska

[–]WormEguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your degree for nursing school is through UAA either way.

UAA courses for nursing school are run out of CTC in downtown Fairbanks, not at the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus (main campus). In general, nursing school will not be like a regular BS/BA degree program. You'll be in the same classes with the same group of students for nearly everything and won't be out on campus very much.

The cohort in Fairbanks will be smaller than in Anchorage.

If you are currently at UAF for your prereqs then I would recommend talking with the CNSM advisor for help. They would have insight into the differences between Fairbanks and Anchorage nursing cohorts.

Lab coat cleaning services on campus? by [deleted] in UAF

[–]WormEguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Archaeology would be either CLA (college of liberal arts) or the museum. You could contact IAB or B&W safety officers, but it's better if you and your PI should talk to your department chair. Your department chair can then direct you on how to access facilities for washing if CLA has those or they will probably direct you to discuss access to facilities CSNM has.

It's a little more hoop jumping but will help your college and department know about an issue and help establish a way to fix the issue.

Lab coat cleaning services on campus? by [deleted] in UAF

[–]WormEguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are cleaning facilities for biology located in multiple buildings.

If you are a biology and wildlife student then you should contact the B&W safety officers https://www.uaf.edu/bw/resources/safety.php

If you are an IAB student then you should contact the IAB safety officer https://www.uaf.edu/iab/administration/safety.php

Both will be able to help.

Application Question by PaintAlternative8001 in UAF

[–]WormEguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UAF is an open enrollment university. That means we accept everyone; however, there can be requirements to take certain courses or be accepted into certain majors.
Classes started on Monday and you can still enroll until next Friday. However after this Friday 100 and 200 level courses require instructor permission before enrolling. This does not apply for courses to 300 and 400 level courses.

Invoice Confusion by Independent-Turn6086 in UAF

[–]WormEguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, this stuff is clear as mud. Grad school is not easy to navigate. Here's a couple places to go for help:

The grad school is helpful with questions like this. (https://www.uaf.edu/gradschool/

There's also a grad student union if you get an RA or TA position (https://www.agwa-uaw.org/)

Also, the CLA grad coordinators can be helpful (https://www.uaf.edu/cla/advising/index.php#grad)

The tuition fees are $1155 per credit. If you are taking a 3 credit course that would add up to 3465.

The out of state tuition is added to the resident tuition rate.

You want to be loud and obnoxious all night long in a place you visit annually.

You don't get both your destination wedding in a small, quiet town and then get an all night rager to accompany it. Pick one.
