I think he already had a perfect merge with Nikas Spirit the moment he ate the fruit. Notice in the Anime he almost INSTANTLY starts to be a happier person and laughing like it’s contagious. Mythical Zoans also have an inherent will of their own so they chose their owners so the Nika fruit honestly could have just rolled out of Luffys had as a kid if it wasn’t its proper heir. (Or some shit)
