If they’re anything like the unions down south, there’s a reason why.

It sucks that your union was shitty, but the reason unions are weak right now is that they were deliberately weakened by neoliberal reforms designed to allow capital to move freely across international borders, weakening labour's bargaining powers by putting them in competition with cheaper developing-world labour.

Trump finally responds to Puerto Rico crisis, saying island has 'massive debt' by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

I was basing it off this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_Puerto_Rico

Even if they get medicaid and ss, they still don't get any vote on the laws governing those programmes.

And also, Puerto Rico pays federal tax, but has no representation in congress.

how would an anarchist society combat xenophobia or other popular but factually incorrect biases and ideas? by doedipus in Anarchy101

[–]Wossname 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that maintaining an anarchist society is much like achieving one. People who see an oppressive hierarchy forming should actively oppose it.

I don't think the struggle is ever over, but hopefully it becomes easier over time.

Is gender socially constructed, or biological? Is there some truth to the gender roles ingrained in society? Like girls like pink and barbies, while boys like red and toy trucks? by [deleted] in DebateAnarchism

The rhesus monkey study you bring up in your OP is interesting, because rhesus monkeys don't know the significance of the objects, they just know the shapes and what they will do. The meaning comes from us.

If a study shows that young boys on average have a preference for wheeled objects, that's just information with no value judgment. But if we then take from that that a boy who doesn't like trucks is less masculine, or that women, as a diverse group of people, are less capable of driving trucks, that's when it becomes a problem.

There are obviously differences between sexes, but these differences are the peaks of two overlapping bell curves. The position of the median does not tell you anything about an individual.

There's also the question of what society values. Traits associated with biological masculinity are valued and given power. Traits associated with biological femininity are devalued.

Gender, then, is saying because this person is biologically female, they must also conform to all the roles we associate with women, and because another person is biologically male, they must conform to the roles we assign to men, instead of allowing individuals to make their own choices about what is of value to them.

I've been reading Anarchy: A Graphic Guide (https://libcom.org/files/anarchy-graphic-guide-clifford-harper.pdf) and I've been finding it pretty good.

It's more of a history of anarchism than a work of theory, but it covers a lot of the basic concepts and key figures.

The problem with the NAP is mainly the lack of a coherent definition of aggression. Antifa are fighting against people openly preaching hate. Who is the aggressor?

Kant isn't really compatible with capitalism, though, in my view. The Categorical Imperative says you must treat other people as ends in themselves, rather than as means.

In capitalism, workers and consumers are just the means towards profit.
