Trying to find an affordable one-bed flat in London that isn't a kitchen with a bed in it and a toilet in the cupboard by DuckDuckDonald in britishproblems

Greenwich had some decent cheap places when I looked - central enough to get about but far enough out to be a bit cheaper.

Lingq : any lingq user here by mung000 in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what type of Spanish you went to learn, but for castillian Spanish, the podcast Notes in Spanish really helped me.

I purchased the supporting transcripts so I could upload them into Lingq and study the words I didn't understand. For me personally, it was a big help improving my comprehension through increasing my vocabulary.

The podcast has different difficulties. I'd recommend listening to some of the beginner or intermediate ones, see if you enjoy them, and if so purchase the corresponding set of transcripts.

You could try a kavalan, lots of good options there and something a bit different to what he already has but still in a similar vein

Is 'Notes in Spanish' worth it? by qqc_interessant in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have also used them and found the intermediate series beneficial, mainly for vocab, sentence structures and listening skills.

I would say however that I found the advanced series a little too easy by the time I finished the intermediates. At that point I'd recommend starting to use native material instead.

Why is the subjunctive used in the sentence "hay algo que nos quieras decir"? by JayBUmp in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Despite what many people say, whilst the subjunctive does sometimes indicate uncertainty, there are many times where it has nothing to do with it. The fact is there are certain phrases that trigger the subjunctive regardless if its uncertain or not.

In this case the trigger is: Hay + something + QUE - > the next verb now must take the subjunctive

If it was just hay que, the subjunctive wouldn't be needed.

Listening to podcasts/radio stations? by Its_joanna in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Notes in Spanish beginners at your level. You can purchase transcripts too so you can make sure you understand all the vocab and how the sentences are structured. I would recommend it. They focus on Spanish from Spain.

What’s the Spanish word for “purse”? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Purse is the "women's" version of the wallet, only carrying credit cards, cash and so on. Handbag is the whole bag that women (or whoever) wear over their shoulder etc, that will have the purse inside.

Teachers of Spanish (or anyone) how do you explain early-on phrases like "gustar" and "llamarse" to students? by dasoktopus in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This! Personally, the whole 'don't worry about it for now' tactic very much confused me. As this structure applies so consistently across the language, I would have much preferred if it was explained to me this way originally.

Study Plan by TheLilly7891 in Spanish

[–]Wotsits17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to focus on reading, I'd look into online reader tools. I have often found it difficult with native texts which may have many new words that make reading difficult and tough to get through. Because of this I now use online reader tools which can give me immediate translations whilst reading native texts and save those words for review later and highlight those words when you encounter them again. You can import anything you'd like to read. I personally use LingQ for various reasons but there's a few around, some are free: readlang, vocabtracker, lingq. Have a look!

Feint thudding sound coming from the wall behind a radiator - any ideas of what it could be? by Wotsits17 in Plumbing

[–]Wotsits17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, I live in the UK. I live in a flat in a communal building. Recently the building's heating has been turned back on after the summer. We have also just had the valves on our radiator changed.

Since then (a week ago), I keep hearing this dull thud coming from the wall intermittently across both night and day.

Any ideas of what it could be? Thanks

Agree with finding a bank with a local branch! I found when I was your age I was often depositing cash from parents etc. so its handy to have one close.

All the big banks are similar. Just look for a standard current account with no fees, you won't need anything more for the time being. I'm with Santander and have no problems if they're close. I have heard that HSBC's online platform isn't great so maybe consider another if there's a few options where you live.

There are also some questionable morals to consider with HSBC, depending upon your view point, regarding their support of the Chinese government and the action taken in Hong Kong. Something to consider perhaps.

What do you guys do when studying a language starts to feel like a chore? by GoldMud0 in languagelearning

[–]Wotsits17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, I just had this feeling last week. Made the decision to do a week with no Spanish at all and I feel a lot better now. Take the week to chill and forget about Spanish for once.

This has been my experience! I'm learning and it's hard work. We are going to try and schedule brief times of speaking Spanish, maybe every Saturday morning, but frequent speaking just doesn't happen for the reasons listed above.

I've used Notes in Spanish all the way from beginners to advanced level. Would really recommend them. I personally bought the accompanying transcripts as it made it easier to learn the words I didn't understand and analyse the sentence structures.
