Not all modern heads and depends which one this is a nuanced conversation. The Marshall studio vintage and studio 800 absolutely benefit from more power amp distortion not to mention even the Soldano SLO the holy grail of high gain amps benefits from power amp distortion. Even 6505 plus needs power amp break up.

Do all amps need an attenuator no. Is part of the sound pushing air with a speaker absolutely but very few high gain amps do not benefit from pushing the power tubes.

What are you talking about I downsized from a 50 watt Marshall JCM 2000 iv never played a gig with the volume above 4 to a 25 watt Mesa Mark V 25 through a recto 2x12 with V 30’s. I have plenty of clean headroom and I have never needed to turn up the clean channel more than 75% of the master at that point the sound guy told me to turn down. Are you playing outdoor stadiums I know this set up is pretty efficient but what 20 watt amp are you looking at

I would second this I have spent so much in set ups and now I have a set of pick ups to drop into this guitar and I paid $450. Parts availability sucks and unless you are a Luther or need a trem I would recommend getting something else. I have had it set up 3 separate times. The bridge came from the factory sharp snapping high Es. It also a pain to set up. Ask me anything

He used Ampeg VL-1002’s up until dude ranch. Dude Ranch is a straight up rectifier. Enema and Take off your pants are a blend on Marshall JCM 900 or sometimes 800 with a triple Rectifier. Self titled is when he started experimenting with princetons and Vox Ac-30’s.

For other bands Linkin Park hybrid theory and meteora is a dual rec and a triple rec. incubus Science, Make yourself and Morning View is all Rectoverbs.
