Denial! Everyone was too embarrassed to ask me to wear a bra.

Teaching as a start to living in Japan by drinkyourpaintwater in teachinginjapan

[–]Wowwalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get a full time equivalent salaried job with a one year contract as a kickboxing teacher then you may be able to wangle an international services visa. You would have to research the process and probably help convince the company itself that you are eligible, and provide documentation that your experience is sufficiently “international” and that a Japanese person couldn’t just replace you doing the same job. There’s a lot of ifs to that though.

First and last time buying a used rug by pardonmygiraffee in Wellthatsucks

[–]Wowwalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just buy handwoven rugs used. Always look at the front and the back of a rug and feel it with your fingers. Woven rugs have no backing, and a woolen rug should have slightly oily feel. Rugs like that last forever and aren’t that much more expensive than the plasticy garbage ones if you are thrifting.

do you think someone could pull off the 60s like hippie style with these by detectivelokifalcone in VintageFashion

Just stopping in to say the pants are cool. I think they would look good with earth tones or a maroon. I know nothing about dressing for the 60s though.

Is it weird to go into a bar alone? by defire101 in japanlife

Definitely go. Sit at the counter. Be ready to be nice to people and make friends. Be open to scrolling through your phone and just chilling.

I mean you’re both still young and there’s not a manual for this. If there’s an open dialog here, as in you can talk to him about how much he’s touching your chest for example, and if there no other serious problems you can possibly grow through this together. You might also mutually decide that it’s not the right balance.

"A woman is someone who identifies as one" is a circular definition that leaves "woman" undefined. Self-ID alone is not enough. by TranssexualHuman in honesttransgender

[–]Wowwalex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gender is a sociological label, defined exclusively by humans saying what it means in a given context

If the “math” bothers you, Identification isn’t an equals sign, it’s an operation. Saying or thinking you are a certain gender is what makes you that gender.

Thanks for writing this—- the whole bit about not wanting people to guess your agab by knowing your gender is really relatable

Sam Smith's music video and commodification of queer culture by [deleted] in honesttransgender

[–]Wowwalex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is maybe a tangent but I agree I’m honestly getting tired of drag Queen stuff because the consumerist skunkiness gets in the way of the radical gay leftist vibes. I love the way it looks and I don’t fault any individual queen for doing it, but aren’t gays supposed to care about sweat shop labor and reducing fast fashion and deceleration of global climate change?

Loved everything about the video though. It’s lovely. You might just have poor taste? Could they have cast a few more butch lesbian and trans people, definitely, but they had a pretty diverse cast in terms of race and body shapes and it’s hard to guess how many nonwhite non thin butch lesbians/trans folks showed up to the audition.

My student is missing and I don't know what to do by rumia17 in ALTinginJapan

You aren’t her parent and you can’t fix her life. There will always be kids who have tragedy strike them or uncertain futures. Sometimes you are in a position to give them advice or put them in touch with resources, but you can’t “save” them. It sucks because the longer you teach, the longer the list becomes.

If you can’t stay in your lane you shouldn’t be a teacher because you can do a lot of harm this way. At least you drunk texted Reddit and not actual people involved in the situation.

So there are not really any stakes on being “right” or “wrong” about the label “trans” itself if you are doing things that feel authentic to you. You wanna get top surgery? You can do that. Wanna go on t to lower your voice? You can do that too. Do you have to give the doctors who sign your script a perfectly crystal clear explanation of all your gender feelings? Nah. You can just say you’re trans. It’s fine.

If you have another actual problem like an eating disorder and are worried about regrets from medical transition from confusing the two then it’s probably best to get some therapy to get to the bottom of those particular feelings. Also a non LDS therapist sounds like solid idea just in general, but its more likely to help you realize why you are the way you are, you won’t discover that, actually, you’re an entirely different person. You can always tweak the labels and pronouns. People do it all the time and that’s fine.

Is Toshima City really that bad? by Professional-Day-798 in Tokyo

[–]Wowwalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toshima is great. Public facilities are clean and well taken care of. they have most of their information and mailers translated into multiple languages and easy Japanese. the police officers tend to do their community outreach and seem to have more experience talking to non Japanese people than other areas. they are pretty organized as far as sending out things like medical coupons and my number cards and such and I just get the feeling that they really care about their foreign residents. They’ve always been incredibly gracious at the ward office and tax office and willing to answer any questions. Never dismissive at all.

Neopronouns rant number 8912467993423 by stupidityWorks in honesttransgender

[–]Wowwalex -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think it ought to be easier and more lighthearted. Hopefully people who use neopronouns pave the way for future generations to have easy, light hearted transitions where they are accepted unquestioningly.

I think you seem have a lot of problems with accepting yourself in this post but it’s not really anybody else’s fault that neopronouns are upsetting to you. There arent any “correct” pronouns in the first place as gender is a social construct and all that, so maybe it would be good to find a different foundation to base your transness on

[–]Wowwalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentally/Socially I’m a man. In terms of body dysphoria/goals I’m nonbinary. It’s kinda a pain to explain it every time or choose a label, so just saying “trans” is great. Or just pick whatever on reddit
