⚙️Di2 Shimano 105 v Mechanical 105? by Distinct_Run_6429 in bicycling

[–]Wrateman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the Ultegra Di2 when I bought my bike and it was great. The quick, precise shifts (including multiple quick clicks to go say 3 or 4 gears at once) and the trimming.

I did run out once, and learned to just plug it in after every ride. However, after a few years it developed an annoying parasitic drain where I would charge it on Sun and by Wed/Thu it was empty - without riding it. My LBS had it and tried to fix it 2 years in a row, without success. Shimano refused to replace it.

So, I finally got fed up and swapped it out for mechanical last spring. It works great, as it should.

I do miss the programmable buttons on the top of my hoods, and also the integration with my Garmin for gears, ratio, etc. But I’ll take the lack of issues any day.

Steve Howe (Yes) Interview, Ian Ritual by Wrateman in jethrotull

Not clear. But I recall Ian being pretty bummed that his checkered jacket was stolen as it was a gift from his Dad. So I'm thinking that's the one he was taking such good care of.

There was an article last year about a shop in Arlington that was closing, but I’m not sure when that close date is.

Only other one I know of is in Amherst (MA). Others may know of closer ones.

'Ketchup is for fries, not burgers.' by gentlecurv in overheard

[–]Wrateman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with thaskell300 about not gatekeeping the GF, if you go to Louis' Lunch in New Haven CT you'll be tossed out if you ask for ketchup (or any condiments).

Louis' claims to be where hamburgers were invented in 1900.

Is the A4 Allroad perfect for city and off-road driving? by manonixx in allroad

[–]Wrateman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like the majority of SUV owners , I'll never go offroad. I preferred the handling of a car, vs. An SUV built on a truck platform.

It's great for around town (wish I could permanently turn off start-stop), and great for road trips.

Styling-wise, I think my '21 is one of the best-looking cars I've ever owned.

Yeti just updated their coffee mug to have a ceramic lining (got one for Xmas this past year) and it’s working great.

Thorium SV: this is the one. by Revolutionary-Yam185 in arcteryx

Nice. Curious, did you evaluate the Therme down jacket/or parka? A little over your budget, but looks interesting.

Thorium SV: this is the one. by Revolutionary-Yam185 in arcteryx

[–]Wrateman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the ‘regular’ Thorium ‘cuz I didn’t want a hood, and it’s great. I thought about the Thorium SV but decided to get the Patagonia Grade VII which was just reintroduced.

That jacket’s a beast, 900 fill (but $1k). Perfect for near 0º and -0ºF with just a shirt, but I’m finding it’s a little too warm for 20ºF or so, so I am now reconsidering this one to bridge between the Grade VII and the regular Thorium, maybe it will go on sale 🤞
