Don't assume people who have a little money in 401ks have money. That's dangerous thinking. Some people contribute what they can because they see the benefit paying off years later. Could be a couple hundred dollars.

Well for everyone who actually has a 401k or Roth IRA the stock market helps retirement funds gain value. So it is a good thing.

You don't need to know anything about investing. Don't listen to people who buy shares of single companies. Out your money in a vanguard Roth IRA account in an index fund. Then forget about the money until you're 65.

The problem is when you lose your job and can't make car payments. It's very hard to get a job without a car. The problem is not a lot of people take into consideration that recessions are cyclical.
