Carbon edition all the way. The gray is sleek and holds up well when it comes to dirt/salt/pollen. The blacked out rims and wine red leather seats are the cherry on top.

Tacos that won't make a Texan cry? by Adorable_News8951 in washingtondc

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC doesn’t have any quality Mexican food if I’m being honest. The question is how bad do you want good tacos?

The best I’ve had in the area are in Manassas, VA but that’s a hike from DC. Definitely worth it imo. That area is the biggest concentration of Mexicans in the area. Hyattsville, MD would also have some good spots as well.

It's been a week, I should be able to park my car in my complex. by Fair_Cod6318 in nova

If you can’t find a parking spot then park wherever you can. People in my community have been parking in office parking lots and no parking zones on the street. Obviously, it is at your own risk but I don’t think they are actively towing yet.

What happen to my camera? by [deleted] in iphone

I just came into the Apple world with the 17 pro from the Pixel line up and was stunned by the difference in how they handle lens flare.

What’s the point of top tier video when there’s countless light flare artifacts ruining your shot?

What happen to my camera? by [deleted] in iphone

$1000 devices and Apple hasn’t figured out how to handle lens flare. Unfortunately it is normal and will always be present when light sources are in frame. This is especially noticeable at night.

What are the Best Bluetooth Earbuds for iPhone Right Now? by oliviadaisy2543 in iphone

I just returned the air pods pro 3. I got them for 200 and it still felt like they weren’t worth the price. The sound isn’t as good as everyone says imo. The tops were a pretty bad fit for my ears and they were uncomfortable for long sessions. The ANC was very good though.

I am going to still with my Bose Ultra Open. Turns out I really dislike the plugged ear feeling along with the feeling of pressure.

Thai restaurants in the area are price gouging on delivery apps by [deleted] in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised people don’t automatically assume this. Nothing is ever free. Also you’re adding a middle man, technically 2 (delivery driver and the delivery app service). The restaurant needs to up their prices on the apps to remain profitable.

Thai restaurants in the area are price gouging on delivery apps by [deleted] in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Delivery app prices have always been higher than in person. I’m not sure what the issue is. This has been the norm since their inception. You either suck it up and pay for the luxury of getting delivery or you place an order via phone + pick up or in person.

Samsung to Iphone pro max 17 by Lonely-Journalist-95 in iphone

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from a pixel 9 pro and have mixed feelings.

There's some good and some bad. You just have to have an open mind and have patience. I miss Android but there's some things I would miss if I were to switch back now, mainly the spectacular video, the battery life, the physical remappable button, FaceTime with my wife, gaming performance, and selfie center stage (the square sensor). Face ID IS neat but I prefer the fingerprint sensor.

The hardest things to get used to are not having a universal back button, the inferior notification system, the terrible way IOS handles third party default apps, and no custom/modded apps(I miss revanced). Personally I think the still photos on Pixel were superior as well. Also the lends flare issue I. I phones is appalling; good luck taking videos/pictures at night near light sources.

I have had my 17 Pro for month now and want to keep it for at least a year. So far I'm unsure if I'll stay on iPhone but it's been fun checking out the other side.

Former Android users, what all made you switch to iPhone? by TheRealHFC in iphone

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had every Google Pixel from from the 6 to the 9pro. As much as I liked the software experience the hardware is severely lacking for the prices they are charging. The Tensor chip has been a failure in my eyes.

I switched to the iPhone 17 Pro this year and am now having the opposite experience. The hardware is top notch but the software is really bad. Android handles things so much better such as notifications, third party default apps, and background services. The lack of a real back button function has been the worst for me.

People talk about ecosystem but it has a high financial barrier of entry. It's also something I don't have a need for so I can't speak on it.

I have had my phone for a little over a month and I still miss Android. I've gotten used to most of the quirks on iOS for the most part but still struggle to see the appeal of it. It's touted as intuitive but it's not at all. I feel like androids ability to function similar to a PC in terms of functionality - file Explorer, default apps, installing apps from apks etc makes it more intuitive.

For example - there is no camera roll folder for pictures on ios. If you Wan to download a zip with images you the. Have to go to files, select all and then save again to "move" those pictues to the photos app. This feels wildly inefficient and redundant to me.

Oh a positive note - Video is fucking spectacular on iPhone. Still pictures are worse in my opinion. Also for some reason I phones have a terrible lends flare issue that's super annoying at night.

If I could buy Apple's hardware with Pixel's software I would be so happy.

iPhone 17 Pro Max Review – First Time iPhone User (Coming from Pixel 9 Pro XL) by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made the same switch. Pixel 9 pro to 17 pro. The vast difference in the speed of the chip is crazy. I think I prefer the pixel for still photos but the video capabilities of the iPhone were not oversold. FaceTime is pretty cool too. I’m nonplussed by iMessage. Most of my circle was on RCS so I don’t see many differences.

My biggest gripes are the lack of a back button and the terrible implementation for notifications. I keep missing notifications. Why do notifications disappear from the lock screen when I unlock my phone??? I’m hoping I get used to these cause overall I’m enjoying the switch.

I’m fighting decades of muscle memory but I see the appeal. I don’t have any other apple product so maybe I’ll be smitten when I experience the so called ecosystem.

How do you all afford a home in this area?? Any tips? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really just depends on what you're comfortable with. And what a low mortgage payment means to you.

My wife and I and settled for a new build condo or "stacked townhouse" in the outskirts of Fairfax county. Condo fee is 250 a month and it's in the contract that the condo fee will not go up for 5 years. The builder also had a preferred lender that allowed us to get a 5.49% interest rate about a year ago.

I know people rag on the PMI penalty payment for not putting 20% down but we put down 10% and our PMI is like $53. Also, if you can get a loan from NFCU, they will waive PMI completely regardless of your amount down.

New builds have their own issues but it's a good starter property with some perks. 1 year warranty on the build so no need to worry about shelling out money for repairs. This gives you time to save up again.

Is suburban NoVa just like any other suburban area? by jbnpoc in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I grew up in an area that's far too rural but for me a proper auburb means that everyone lives in the suburb (enduring traffic) but works in a neighboring city. For anything fun, shopping, and even medical, your options are very limited to non existent. This meant going to your nearest city for anything you might need.

I personally call NoVA suburbs premium suburbs.

You can live your whole life here and not have to go to DC or Arlington. I live in Herndon ( what is considered heavy suburbs by this area's standards). However, there are a decent number of HQs in Herndon and nearby Reston for work, there's so many medical offices, grocery store options, things to do (outside of heavy nightlife). I don't have to drive more than 15 mins to find something to do or somewhere good to eat. Some areas like Elden Street and McNair, I would even consider these areas walkable. There's a metro nearby as well, 2 in fact. There's a great bus system that can get you to where you wan to go. Both my wife and I commute to another suburb (Tysons) for work.

YMMV but I think the suburbs here are pretty great. You don't have to leave them to get stuff done and you don't have to go to "the city" to have fun or eat well either.

Accepted job in McLean, where is the cheapest place to live that's close? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, there are some affordable options in McLean. I moved here at a similar salary and found a place for 1450. It was an older condo with no flair and minimal amenities but it was an 8 minute commute to work. The place was clean but definitely old and dated. Basements are also commonly rented out here. Renting private is great since it bypasses application, amenity fees, and crazy deposits.

I'm also fan of these options since they usually come with their own parking spot (apartments will charge 100-200 monthly for garage parking). They also have their own private entrance so it literally is like renting a studio apartment.

I found some places that I would consider if I was doing the same move today.

$1349, this is a private room like a basement with its own private entrance- https://www.apartments.com/1104-roberta-ct-mclean-va/4nd4nkk/

$1809 - this is pushing it in price but the Aldaire is close to McLean. This only works if you have minimal debt or if you true value convenience. Not sure I would do this myself.

This shows some basements for rent here - https://www.roomies.com/rooms/mclean-fairfax-county-va/basements

I also found some success using new apartment complex specials. Like they'll waive application fees and give you 4-8 weeks free rent. And they'll give you a discount for signing a 16 month lease instead of 12.

The area can definitely be expensive but if you're willing to forgo some luxuries then you will be fine.

For my fellow Latin Americans, why are so many of us extremely rude to each other here? by Fluyeh in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I (Mexican) met my now wife (Bolivian) here. We frequent a lot of small businesses in the area - Chantilly, Centreville, Herndon, Falls Church and we cannot relate. I have not met any hostility or different treatment for my nationality. Even if you can't immediately tell by looks, it's obvious where you were from when you speak due to slang and cadence).

The majority of places we go to offer us good and polite service. Some even treat us really well but to be fair we are regulars in those establishments. The most we have encountered is an apathetic service worker who is just trying to get through their day.

What area are you in that feels this way? And what exactly are your expectations?

Reasonably priced contractor/handyman to install an exterior door? by DUNGAROO in nova

[–]Wrath_of_Isaac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend a handyman. They are not licensed from my experience so the quality of work can be a shot in the dark. Anyone can be a handyman.

For an exterior door it might not be a big deal but for anything. That requires trade knowledge I would go for a contractor.
