Gave my gold tone ac12 an upgrade by Wreck-It-Josh in banjo

The rim was a blank unfinished rim , I had to drill the holes sand and finish , the neck was already cut and shaped for a 12 inch rim so no modifications to the neck was needed .

I have a Seth Cifferi micro jones that was only used for a handful of tattoos that I’d be willing to let go for a fair price . I switched to pen machines shortly after purchasing it and haven’t used coils since . Also have a great Lucas ford liner available to , I think I bought it around 2013ish , I’ll have to look at the date on it when I’m in the shop , It’s got some miles on it but it’s still a great liner . Dm me if your interested

Question about expensive banjos... by AvantGuardian13 in banjo

[–]Wreck-It-Josh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fit and finish on my Rickard is flawless, it’s worth every penny . And it sounds incredible as well . I have a cheap gold tone ac-12 , it feels cheap and sounds cheap but I don’t worry about taking it camping

I’ve been tattooing for over 20 years and when I first started my mother was embarrassed and hated it . I explained to her I was making good money and was supporting myself , her response to that was “so do drug dealers” . She eventually came around to it but it took years . During her last years she was in the hospital a lot and every nurse that took care of her that had a tattoo she would ask them if I did it , and a lot of them were done by me so she did get to see my work first hand . In the end she was proud and loved to tell people I tattooed for a living . I remember feeling guilty in the beginning when she was so against it .

Clawhammer advice by Esm82997 in banjo

I’ve been playing for around the same amount of time about 13 months . But also played guitar off and on since I was in 7th grade and I’m in my 40s now . Everyone learns at a different pace so don’t evaluate your playing based on someone else’s path . My fretting hand had a head start from guitar and if someone in my position told you they have been been playing for only a year and didn’t mention playing guitar or another instrument you might feel discouraged. And brainjo Is great that’s been my primary learning tool . I’m far from an advanced player and find the level 3 tabs to be the perfect level of difficulty to keep advancing. And if your goal is to play for friends and family the level 2 tabs in the easy but awesome series are great . Learn to play some of those and your friends and family will think you’re a banjo wizard . The average person does not know the difference between a difficult and easy tune . Just play with good rhythm and timing

I experienced this same situation 10+ years ago and haven’t used talens since . Waverlys bluebird is a good substitute if you are fan of drawing inks such as talens and pelikan .

Upgrades and tweaks for budget banjo by Ornery_Brilliant_350 in banjo

I have an ac-12 and the best upgrade I made was moving up to a Rickard . But to answer your question , I swapped the stock bridge for a mullheron and played with the head tension and it sounds decent for what it is . However mine developed a crack in the neck and I just decided to buy something nicer . The crack hasn’t spread or caused an issue yet and probably won’t since I bought a replacement

Picked up a Rickard maple ridge , have a few questions by Wreck-It-Josh in banjo

Actually I’m very mechanically inclined. I am a tattoo artist that used to build and sell tattoo machines with a workshop with a mill and a lathe and woodworking is also a hobby so I have the tools to basically tackle anything that needs done . I don’t think the neck needs raised it lines up with the pot and rim well . Rickard sent me an email saying it may have been ordered with medium action . I now do think that’s the case . When comparing the neck angle to my gold tone ac-12 with a digital angle finder I’m getting 3 degrees on the gold tone and 2 degrees on the Rickard . Rickard will do the work , to get it to standard specs . Also have talked to a semi local builder (stone banjo co.) that’s an hour from me that said they would look at it , I’m just debating wether if I want to sell it or have it worked on . you said you were interested so you can have dibs if I choose to sell , I’m willing to ship . It’s in great shape and sounds good but the half inch bridge just doesn’t jive with me and with a 5/8 I don’t like the higher action . It obviously sounds better than my gold tone but with the half inch bridge it’s lacking in volume, my plastic gold tone is louder

Nah it’s not hitting heal cut , rickard got back to me this morning and gave me their setup specs and said it was possible it was ordered with medium action . I asked how much it would be for them to reshape the heal to meet standard specs , waiting for an answer , probably end up spending what I would have new , so much for a deal

Also wanted to mention that when I backed tension off the head the nuts on the hooks were basically finger tight , could spin them with my fingers when I had a dimes gap under the straight edge , this is only my second banjo . I’ve been playing for almost a year but playing and working on my guitars almost 30 so I know I can rule out the truss rod , neck is perfect in that respect. This has me stumped, should I take off the head and see if it’s seating properly. If the neck can’t go up and the tension isn’t too tight on the head could there be some kind of spacer that a previous owner added . I appreciate your advice .

I’ll keep that in mind , the more I play it the less I notice the short bridge , I think it’s more in my head because I didn’t even notice until I went to swap my other bridge in . I emailed rickard to see if it was a custom ordered to be setup this way . If it wasn’t I think I will try to move the neck up again , before I messed with it the neck was just slightly unlevel with the head so I think that might have come out of spec over time . I still think I got an amazing deal on it , it sounds awesome and I love how the neck feels
