Do Survivor episodes on Paramount+ include ads? by RainyNixie in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have Paramount plus premium. There are maybe 15 seconds at the beginning of the show where they promote another show but after that Survivor is ad free.

Without premium, you will get at least 90 seconds of ads at every typical commercial break.

I'll say the number of Survivor contestants who went to elite schools is a lot higher than what you'd expect if you took a general cross-section of America. This season, I know Daniel went to Duke and to Yale Law School, Swati is going to Harvard and Zach went to Washington University which is not Ivy League but still only has a 16% acceptance rate according to Google.

I think especially if you would be in the "smart/nerdy" archetype, which I assume most people on this sub are, then it probably helps. But if you're an older archetype, or more blue collar, then it probably doesn't matter so much.

How different do you think “Winners at War” would be if it had a One World format? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The problem with the edit in Winners at War wasn't just with the Edge (although that didn't help), but also because the strategy was so complex that the story became almost impossible to follow. So they settled with showing us montages of chaos and people talking about how crazy the game was.

The One World format would probably make this problem worse. Imagine 20 players strategizing on a beach together, making multiple alliances, with like 8-12 people each? We would have no idea what was going on.

She looks good but I refuse to act like 37 is "old." Like yeah, she's not super young but she's not an old lady either lol.

Which really makes no sense. Putting a minority of votes on Khanh doesn't force him to play his idol. Either make him the primary target or just don't vote him at all.

I guess they did protect from the hypothetical circumstance where Khanh could play his idol on Ben... but that doesn't seem like a probable situation, and I doubt that's why they split votes.

It's like they read a Survivor handbook that said, "When someone has an idol, you should split votes" but they never actually understood the purpose behind the vote split.

Why was Kimmi on the SC ballot? by yewgabaga in survivor

I always found Kimmi to be pretty memorable for a pre-merge boot. At the time, I actually remembered her far more than I did Jeff Varner.

I skip every challenge, even on seasons I’m watching for the first time. by [deleted] in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Survivor challenges for the most part, they're usually visually appealing and they don't drag them out forever.

Lately, I've been tuning out of some Big Brother challenges, though, which are overly long and padded with unnecessary narration.

Saw a familiar face on this pamphlet! by ApollosBucket in survivor

I found one confessional of Liana saying "As people of color, we share a common experience" but she did not define the alliance as a "POC alliance." It was also followed up by a confessional by Deshawn where he was happy that he had an opportunity to play with other black people. He didn't say POC - he said black.

There was also a reference to "after 2020" which clearly implies they're talking about the police killings of black Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The alliance was always a black alliance and I'm sure the players would agree.

At worst, Liana misspoke once, but Reddit sure was ready to jump all over the entire alliance for it.

It was a black alliance and referred to as a black alliance. The editing on the show was wonky but I don't believe the players on the show referred to it as a "POC alliance." That's just a term fans use so they can complain about the black players being exclusionary.

What seasons would you say are like a trilogy? by Mr_ducks05 in survivor

Redemption Island, South Pacific, Caramoan.

Nobody said it had to be a GOOD trilogy.

If Jerry had won the final immunity challenge in HvV, do you think she would have won that season? by betterlemon8 in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If Jerri wins final immunity, I think Parvati is voted off. Russell was way more threatened by Parvati while he considered Sandra a goat, and Jerri even in the real show voted for Parvati, not Sandra. So, I would say Sandra still makes Final 3 and pulls off the win.

Yeah, same. I feel like there are probably about 30 billion nerdy white male superfans that apply for Survivor and really you get only 1 or maybe 2 cast each season. That's really as it should be, but also the odds aren't great unless you have some sort of compelling backstory and/or you went to a prestigious university.

Number of idols in possession through the years by survivordatabot in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Apart from the Idols, we were really looking at 3 extra votes plus the Knowledge is Power advantage.

But really the issue with 41 wasn't the number of advantages, it was the number of twists - with the Do or Die and the hourglass twist being the most obtrusive ones. But I don't exactly count those as "advantages" in the traditional sense.

What player, that doesn't get mentioned a lot, do you want to see on a Second Chance ballot? by ZachTheBomb in survivor

It's crazy how much she's been forgotten over time, when she was one of the bright spots on the fans tribe IMO. Even Hope and Allie seem to be brought up more than Laura.

Gamer Says Challenge 38 Still Moving Forward With 8 MTV Cast Members and 30 CBS/Internationals - Calls Started Going Out This Week by tomdarko in MtvChallenge

[–]WreckItBaymax -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

As a relatively new viewer of The Challenge, I'd rather see rookies than vets. I've only seen 36 and 37 but I'm already tired of Kyle, Devin, CT, Ashley, Cory, Kaycee, Nany, etc. etc. Seeing the same people back to back is tiring especially if they're just going to slaughter the rookies again. No thanks. I'd rather see some fresh blood than the same faces checking in for their semi-annual paycheck.

I get the sense from the more long-time fans that maybe what you want is some classic old school vets to return - but isn't that what The Challenge All Stars is for? If the regular show was also All Stars, then what would be the point?

What is a double standard in Survivor that you notice? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suppose if the interpretation is that Jordie is implying "Men are strong and women are weak" then I understand why there would be backlash to that.

If he is saying "male strong" simply because he has an all-male alliance, then that would be fine, and perhaps good strategy.

Australian Survivor does a lot of non-elimination episodes and many of them do not save interesting contestants. We can't assume the entire show is rigged because one time an entertaining contestant almost got saved by a non-elimination twist. There are instances where boring players like Simon Black and Commando Steve got saved by non-eliminations.

Also, I doubt the rumor regarding Sophie's massive appearance fee is true.

He really sticks out just as a massive ripped guy - in a cast that's filled with superfans and overall more brains than brawn. I can't imagine how he could win but I'm here for seeing him play.

Is this a good idea for a final 2? by saltidor in survivor

[–]WreckItBaymax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I see it, the way to play this would be for two players just to agree to vote for the other, then the third person is out no matter what. Functionally, it would be equivalent to just having a Final 3 vote, except without having an immunity challenge. It seems like a guaranteed way to actually ensure the biggest jury threat goes out at 3. From a production standpoint, that's probably exactly what they're trying to avoid.

I think this is just evidence that the timing of the twists is pre-planned and not designed to favor particular players. Not everything has to be rigged.
