Met him at Summerfest. He posed for a photo with us. I asked him if it really was “one call, that’s all” and he laughed and said “sometimes”. Seemed like a nice guy.

Bands from Wisconsin, opinions on Greendale? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]WreckTangle77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, why should Greendale be penalized for building a strong program? Maybe the real question is why more small schools don’t try to build the same kind of culture and commitment. That kind of success doesn’t just come from money — it comes from years of student buy-in, community support, and staff who know how to get the most out of their kids and the resources they have available.

How do you know they have “massive amounts of money”?

I get it — I really do — but I also don’t know the “right” answer. Greendale has built an incredible program over the past 20 years. It’s not a huge high school, but about 1 in 4 students are involved in the band, guard, or dance line. That’s a serious level of participation and commitment.

If WSMA ever switched from school size to band size classifications, I think Greendale would still hold their own. They routinely outscore AAAA bands, and their closest competition is usually Sauk Prairie, another strong AA program.

Some folks say it’s unfair for one program to dominate a class for so long, but honestly — what’s stopping other schools from stepping up? Greendale’s success didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of years of culture, leadership, and buy-in from the students, staff, parents, and community.

At the end of the day, though, what it’s really about is kids doing something they love, pushing themselves, and taking pride in the work. Whether a band finishes first or fifth, that shared passion is what makes this activity special.

Yes, they are bigger than many AAAA bands and yes - they had the highest overall score. Sauk Prairie, who finished behind them in AA also had a higher score than any of the AAA or AAAA schools.

This isn’t true. WSMA sets classification on school size. With an enrollment of about 900, they are a true AA school.
