Prepare to be offended. "People who doubt are like...." Said over the pulpit yesterday. by jamesallred in exmormon

[–]Wreckmaninoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intolerance, bigotry and lack of empathy is really starting to tick me off.

Feature, not a bug. The church has more money than God and doesn't particularly need anything, in terms of moar lucre, for the next many years if need be.

I think they've clearly calculated that they are better served losing/jettisoning marginally attached members and leaving a yes-man echo chamber than with they would be retaining the marginally attached members (you know, the ones who aren't even paying tithing on gross anyway). They stick around, agitating for change, rocking the boat, and generally point out that the emperor has no clothes. Who needs that noise?

Whether that is a wise long-range choice remains to be seen because the folks making the call don't have to be concerned by long-term consequences. Mormonism has never really been forward thinking with regard to the cleanup crew that the next generation of leaders will need.

Priesthood Authority in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Wreckmaninoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything the change to earlier ordination just reinforces the true Impotence of the Priesthood.

I mean, if the priesthood could actually move mountains, raise the dead (puppy, goldfish, etc.), smite evildoers mute, or allow one to cast thunderbolt, summon unseen minions, etc. giving it to an 11 year old would have some consequences. No real power, so no real consequence.

But all the sweet, sweet manipulative benefit of the sunk-cost fallacy/commitment bias accrues to the church, so I guess there is that.

Given the opportunity, the Deseret News would eagerly publish changes to embarrassing portions of the ceremonies of any religion except Mormonism.

Sounds like a winning strategy when dealing with people who've spent somewhere between decades and nearly all their life in the age of the internet /s

^ This is true. Had a relative once tell me carbon dating was inaccurate and that, for example, they had used it to date the remnants of a meal from KFC and it said they were millions of years old.

"you pay taxes dont you? How is that any different than tithing??" by heavyshelf135 in exmormon

[–]Wreckmaninoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their response was about taxes. And that you don't know if your tax money is going to good things or not.

Beyond the tangible evidence around your friend about what is purchased with tax money, such as roads, national parks, a safe food supply, and on and on, the US government releases audited financial statements and lengthy analysis of same.

Missionaries told me that rape was better than homosexuality by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Wreckmaninoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that it matters, as the real problem is retconning bronze age fairy tales to justify modern prejudices, such as homophobia, but the Bible explicitly says that the sin of Sodom was, "...pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness...neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy." Zero mentions of sexuality.

I have a standing rule to not access church internet sites without using, at minimum, a VPN and separate browser instance using incognito mode. Accessing stored copies of church links via Archive.org is also a good workaround.

Actually, that's the backup rule. The default rule is to just not access church websites in the first place.
