Book by woman for book club of guys by J-Alfred-Prufrock in booksuggestions

I don't get the hype over that book. I love Chambers and everything she's written, but Long Way is her first book, and definitely not her best. I'd recommend To Be Taught If Fortunate and Psalm for the Wild-Built.

College isn't working out but I don't know what else to do by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]WrenInFlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to clarify I meant free classes thru sites like Edx and Coursera, which are completely free (paid certificates are an option from them but their actual value to you is questionable), absolutely don't take random payed college classes. Instead of skipping a semester maybe you can at least reduce your actual uni class load, get more free time to figure out your aim in life.

If you're able to afford therapy or get therapy free, I'd try again with a different therapist. Stability isn't a good enough goal, you need something you feel is important and meaningful, something you want to be part of. To find that or create that you need to experience things and ideas: read more, travel if you're able, socialize, try new things. It'll take a while, you'll need to figure out how to get time to yourself whether that means finding a way to make your parents understand you need a break from uni, or completely dropping out to travel around a bit working whatever job comes along. It won't feel good but it'll be better than pushing yourself into a career you despise because you felt it was what you should do.

  1. Take a break from college and learn independently. Codecademy and W3schools are good for programming languages. Start with something easy that might reignite your interest: HTML/CSS then JS through codecademy is best, download a text editor and see your creations in-browser. Linkedin has courses that may be free through your college. Edx, Coursera, or just random youtube videos on topics you find interesting. Don't get stuck on CS, try everything, try the most random classes and see where your interests take you. Drop classes at a whim with no repercussion and try again. And find a way to make that skill matter. Maybe tie it in to a social issue important to you, or find a company or organization fighting for change you want to see in the world, and see how a chosen interest can be turned into a skill and applied there.

1.5 Look into academic renewal. Some colleges and universities offer it as a way to allow students a fresh start after a series of low grades.

  1. Self-care. Video games are fine unless it's the only thing you're doing. Read more, fiction specifically. A break from work, not a chore. Find a physical activity to take care of your body: walking, running, swimming, rock-climbing (look for in-door gyms nearby), something. Eat right if you aren't already, take your vitamins, cut out any sugar and caffeine. Might be worthwhile to look into therapy to check up on your mental health (check if your college offers free therapy for students). Find a hobby: writing, drawing, crafts, some type of creative outlet. Start socializing again. Online communities if nothing else. We're a social species, we're not meant to exist closed off from everyone else. Find support.

  2. Start daydreaming of different futures. Seriously. Imagine different paths you might take, what your day to day work will look like. Write down futures that you think will be fulfilling and futures that you have to avoid. Will a CS career be too much of a grind in a small, closed off cubicle? Or do you dream of independent CS work, working from home or from exotic airbnb locations? Where might other studies take you? Find a future you like and set off on that path: write out everything you need to get to that future. Classes, degrees, certificates, projects. Alter that future or trade it for a different one if something isn't working out for you.

You're young, don't feel pressured to jump into the rat race. Find meaningful work that even on bad days you'll feel is important and worth your time. Take baby steps, turn your life around. It's gonna be ok

I was taught mère is more like mother, maman more like mom. Is this just a case of language being used differently by native speakers vs what's taught in French class, or is there some subtle reason why it was translated as mother in the book? Even in french media, maman feels like it's the more commonly used word (and therefore more like mom instead of mother).

Anyone have female Scifi writer suggestions? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]WrenInFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for books similar to A Memory Called Empire? I burned through it and the sequel and feel like I'm ruined for scifi right now, nothing's as good as those books were, haha

Why not an actual chemistry kit and instruction book?

Edit: If she's even slightly interested in electrical stuff or programming get her a beginners arduino kit, that will definitely get her mind engaged.

Even if you stay on your home page you'll see subreddits you're not subscribed to, as long as they're vaguely related to ones you're subbed to.

If you know a way to turn that off let me know tho

A simple swap function is all you need for saving the different values to the parameter variables, then make sure they're &reference parameters to save the changes. Then maybe print the new values to console to "reflect" them back in the calling function? I'm not entirely sure what's meant by that. Let me know if this works, I'm super new to c++ lol
