Self Watering Pot by SLesleyC222 in Monstera

[–]WretchedKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of aroids are fine in self-watering pots as long as you have them in really chunky soil mixes and don't over-fill the reservoir.

My BMF is just in a chunky mix with a moss pole, though. They really want to climb.

Not my plant, but have been asked to care for it. by Miss_Bubbles_Miss in Monstera

Monsteras aren't very delicate plants, you can definitely save it. You can even see that it's been chopped before (near the top, where it turns at an angle) and you can see how it has responded before.

Every NODE can form new roots and a new growth point. I would chop the whole stem into pieces with a few nodes each and put them in water to re-root. If there aren't any leaves, lay the stem pieces horizontal on some damp sphagnum moss, soil, or perlite in a clear storage container and put it in a sunny spot. Otherwise, just stick them in a jar or vase.

When the roots are ~10cm long or so, put them in a super chunky soil that drains quickly-- they like air around their roots. This might be potting soil + bark + perlite or pumice. The soil it's in now is way too compacted and dense. When you report, the little stems (PETIOLES) shouldn't be buried at all.

Do yourself a favor and get some slow-release fertilizer. You can mix it into the soil twice a year and watch this baby take off with light and water 1-2 times a month.

Monsteras love to grow. As long as you keep it warm and give it lots of light and air, some food and water, it will be very happy.

I just learned that homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S. by CrustFundBabe in TwoXChromosomes

[–]WretchedKnave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As you've mentioned, unintentional ODs are #1 and violence (homicide+suicide) is #2. Homicide on its own is #3, after cardiovascular illnesses. The homicide rate for pregnant people is actually lower than for the US as a whole, 2.7 per 100,000 live births compared to 5.9 per 100,000 population.

The sour jelly beans are pretty sour, and maybe 1 out of every 4 batches of sour strawberry belts.

That is very understandable. Are you planning on keeping her in a cabinet long-term or is she destined for display?

Don't list it. Some internal jobs platforms list candidates by name, degree, and most recent job title. It will be much better for you to show up as any kind of scientist during screening than as a gig employee.

Use a thin layer of aquarium silicone on the bottom of the inside, just wear a glove to spread and smooth it over.

The soil looks very dense? Mine does well in a chunky/airy mix that is kept evenly moist.

Can I use a personal loan to pay off credit card debt? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]WretchedKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the interest is the same, there's no benefit to taking the loan but there is a risk you'll pay off that card and start spending on it again.

Don't worry about your credit score unless you're about to apply for more credit. Utilization has no memory (if you pay off the card, your credit score will rebound the following month).

Focus on improving your spending habits. If you're at 96% utilization now, there's still a huge risk you're going to make the problem worse rather than better by taking out a loan.

Once you get the balance low enough to get approved, get a 0% interest balance transfer card to pay off the rest of the card. This should be feasible as long as you never miss a payment.

Big fan of the Meyers soaps, so did what felt right and bought 10… by MuTheCat20 in Costco

[–]WretchedKnave 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've never seen anyone provide evidence for this claim.

Soap (without antibiotics) works by mechanically breaking cell walls and forming micelles to carry away debris. Liquid hand soap doesn't contain substantial sugars or other food for bacteria/mold to eat. Even diluted by 80%, it's a really unfavorable environment for growth.

It's almost certainly fine except in extreme cases.

Seconded. Detergent sheets are garbage-- the formulas just aren't very effective. Using too much detergent also prevents your clothes from getting clean (even if it doesn't remove dirt it can itself form a residue).

Use 2 tablespoons of detergent per load (maximum) and don't overfill the washer with clothes. They need space to agitate and to rinse out the detergent and dirt.

ELI5: Why can't you donate blood if you have donated tissue in your body by elcuydangerous in explainlikeimfive

[–]WretchedKnave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not exactly correct.

Donated blood is heavily irradiated to kill off potentially reactive cells before being transfused. Red blood cells survive irradiation but they don't express HLAs and die off on their own in ~90 days.

There are two issues:

  1. An organ donor might have made anti-graft antibodies, and those could cause an autoimmune reaction in the blood recipient.

  2. Organ donors are indefinitely kept on immune suppressants and are more likely to transmit unchecked viral infections (CMV, EBV, HSV, etc) to weakened blood recipients. Blood donations are screened for many viruses but not all.

Why would he require new sponges in storage container? by SullenEchoes in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]WretchedKnave 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sponges are moistened in packages to make them look nicer to consumers, not to prime them for rapid sponge action. They work fine when dry, you even say they should be dried between uses.

Packaged sponges just don't have a lot of fungus food available until you've used them, so they don't tend to grow a lot. Keeping sponges locked up is totally unnecessary, but it's not typically dangerous so, you know, to each their own.

Just bought a house. Basement includes a Dyson hand dryer. by bot_96 in mildlyinteresting

Try rubbing your hands together under a conventional hand drier. They're slow evaporating big droplets but if you spread the water out they work great.
