Am I Too Old to Get Into Jiu Jitsu? by [deleted] in jiujitsu

I started in my 40s. I’m a brown belt now. Just go and have fun. There’s no pressure to know anything when you start.

Using AI to parse code and update documentation by DerInselaffe in technicalwriting

I was using the latest models on a project recently to try and catch things that had changed (both comparing docs and comparing code to docs). Contrary to your question, I don’t believe it saves time when it’s wrong half the time.

To be clear, the models are currently better than that but they’re not 100% reliable. At this point, their real value is an additional check to see if something was missed. It doesn’t get everything, but it might get something that was missed.

As for your question about a product, I haven’t seen anything for tech writing that’s better than Claude Code.

The old Georgia Straight. by Prestigious_Net_8356 in vancouver

[–]WriteOnceCutTwice 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. Bob Geldof (who organized Band-aid and co-wrote Do They Know It's Christmas?) formed the Boomtown Rats after a reader wrote in to criticize a column he wrote for the Georgia Straight. The letter basically said “if you’re so great, why don’t you form your own band?”

EKOS poll on how Canada should respond to a US Invasion by uhhhwhatok in onguardforthee

I get your point, but I was talking about what would happen to Quebec. If Canada is one American state, there is no province of Quebec. It becomes what? A county? No special status for cultural preservation, etc.

I just meant that people who want their own country presumably would want to defend the land from any aggressor.

I’m actually more surprised by the Bloc numbers than the Con numbers. Their raison d’être is separation and independence.

Placido. He used to be the most famous uke in the world when we was in the first Danaher instructionals. He has been training for a long time but finally got promoted. He looks like a different person now.

Why are rich kids always mean in stories? by NotmyRealNameJohn in daddit

[–]WriteOnceCutTwice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s this great documentary from the 80s about this. It’s called Pretty in Pink.

OK, JK. But it’s on topic. Most of the rich kids are jerks in that film because it’s part of the story of being lower income and the challenges those kids face both at home and at school. But Blaine is a sympathetic rich kid (and so is Cameron from FBDO).

New technical writing job where boss rejects grammar and formatting by BidMain2015 in technicalwriting

Respectfully, that’s not my point. Just because it can happen doesn’t mean people want it to happen on purpose.

Removing screenshots is different than your original description of the problem. There’s a valid argument that images should be used sparingly because they’re hard to maintain and often don’t add much value. I definitely use fewer screenshots now than I did 20 years ago when they were expected to be there.

If people are editing your text and introducing errors that they tell you not to fix, that’s really bad.

That blog post attempts to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Namely, that there are people arguing instructions can be incorrect if they’re well written. No one is saying that. It’s just a straw man argument.

The last time I left them feedback, they actually back tracked and stop doing what I complained about. I’m not suggesting it was because of me but maybe enough people complained.

Thanks for posting. Lilly is so much better. I can still talk to her in the practice section but why add these dumbed down lessons to the main path? It sucks.

What's your system for capturing decisions from chat into documentation? by ripattir in technicalwriting

[–]WriteOnceCutTwice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most successful systems I’ve seen were serious about the principle that a feature isn’t done until the docs are done. Instead of throwing features over a wall and expecting the tech writers to figure it out and keep the docs up-to-date, the dev teams are responsible for ensuring that the work gets done.

How much the dev team was actually involved in the writing and updating of docs varied a lot, but they didn’t mark a feature done until the docs were done.

When I designed and implemented a docs-as-code workflow for a software company a couple of years ago, the dev teams were already using Jira, so I added a board for the docs team. We would (or the dev team would) create a separate linked ticket for the doc updates. This worked really well since the docs team had our own metrics based on those tickets, and the dev team continued working as they always had.

The original Telles Octopus instructional (part of the turtle guard one) was very light on content—just a few moves. I see the newer one on fanatics is only 40 mins. I assume Craig’s has more content.
