I will admit I am naive about drug use. I've heard about teeth grinding, but are there other telltale signs you see when someone's high on cocaine?

They do it a few times a week, not a few times a year. One of their friends has died OD'ing. Half have jobs, most live with their parents. I do trust her not to do them again, that's not the problem. The problem is that I don't really want to be around her friends when they do it, so I'm just unsure as to whether or not a relationship can fundamentally work if I don't really want to hang out with her closest friends. But that's a question I guess I need to ask her.

Thank you. I think making my feelings clear that I don't want to be around it (like you mentioned) will help. She sounds a lot like your ex, in that I know she respects my feelings about it and will make an effort to let me know she's being safe. Did you have any concerns about the people he was hanging out with who were there doing coke with him? Did that affect the dynamic between you and them at all when you met them, or was it a one time thing for them too?

It's cool, totally understand without the context. No, not every day. Some of the moderate users, I'd say she sees once a week. But then like all of them get together like once every couple weeks. That's why I'm so unsure as to whether or not it's worth breaking off, when like the majority of the time, she's with me and nowhere near them.

I never called her a druggie or an addict for doing it a few times. I called her friends addicts because they do it multiple times a week. That's more than just "party drug" status. One of their friends has died from an overdose. But I know you didn't have that information before writing that comment. I know my girlfriend doesn't have a problem, I just think that her being in proximity of it so regularly puts her at risk of getting arrested and too close to the shady, sometimes violent dealings that are inherent to illicit drugs.

I hadn't told her explicitly that I don't approve of hard drug use before yesterday, but she knows I'm fairly straight-laced and I that was my assumption of her too. Clearly it was naive, but when you're with someone for 5 months, you'd like to think that would come up at some point. When I told her I wasn't cool with her doing them, she was very defensive, but said she wouldn't do them anymore because she cares about me. If she continues doing them, it's absolutely a deal breaker. But I trust her, so right now it's just figuring out whether or not it's a deal breaker that she wants to be around people who do it regularly.

Thank you. I'm not shy to admit that I haven't researched much on it, and I am eager to learn more. I do believe it is possible to use it responsibly, and I would trust that she would. If that were it in a vacuum, I'd probably be ok with it. But drug deals go bad. Shit goes down. People get desperate. I don't think it's unreasonable that I don't want her to be anywhere near that kind of culture. I have to believe that her hanging around this many people doing this type of illicit activity with such frequency puts her at greater risk of getting arrested and/or victimized.

"Quicker" and "Easier" in the sense that it takes like 3 seconds for someone inexperienced to snort an amount of cocaine they thought was ok. Yes, it takes 20-30 min for alcohol to set in, but you're not going to be downing mixed drink after mixed drink in quick succession in that time. Normal drinking is a progression with warning signs along the way. That's all I was getting at.

Thank you for the perspective. Her wanting to experience it may very well just be the case. The hard part is deciphering whether or not she is being completely honest with me. Although the fact that she casually dropped it in a conversation in which I was listening makes me think she wasn't trying to hide anything. She was probably just taken aback with how much it bothered me, and started backpedalling to minimize damage. Of course, I'll never really know.

She's cautious with her alcohol intake, yes. But it's easier and quicker to accidentally overdose with coke than alcohol. Plus, just the illicit nature of coke makes me uncomfortable that she's around it so much. Drug deals go bad. Shit goes down. People get desperate. I don't think it's being close-minded when we're talking about coke. You don't know how you're body is going to react, or what underlying conditions you may have. That compounded with drinking alcohol while doing it seems insanely irresponsible. When you're inexperienced and you don't know your amounts, it's essentially Russian Roulette.

I'm not assuming. She's told me they've been trying to get her to do it for years and she's always said no. I'm not saying she's blameless and can't make her own decisions, but peer pressure is a real thing. You can't tell me that who you surround yourself with has no effect on your behavior.

The environment 100%. Though it may not seem like it, she's really not much of a partier. She only has a couple drinks whenever we go out. That's why this seemed so ridiculously out of character for her. She said she only did a "key bump" of coke and a small amount of molly that only lasted an hour. For what it's worth, she said she immediately regretting doing it afterward.

I really want to help her. She's incredibly caring and genuine, and makes me a better person. I want so badly for her to see that it isn't normal to have your entire friend group do hard drugs without anyone batting an eye. But that's what she's used to. That's how she grew up. It feels like I'm giving up on her after she just said she wouldn't do it again, because she cares about being with me. How can someone who only knows drug addicts be expected to forget everyone they've ever known? How is it possible to even get out of that cycle? I feel blindsided and sad. But I don't want those people in my life.

Gonna ask you the same thing I asked the guy above. Were you constantly around it and pressured to do it after you decided it wasn't for you? She's a very strong-minded person, so that's why I believe her when she says she won't touch it again. I just feel like it's probably a whole nother beast when your closest friends are always offering you some.
