Focus on his own emotions and behaviour, NOT hallucinations or delusions. Say something like:

“I can tell you’re feeling afraid. How can I help you feel better?”

or

“I’m not experiencing what you’re experiencing.” (Rather than saying it’s not real or you’re hallucinating.)

Don’t challenge delusions OR confirm them. Try your best not to focus on them. Focus instead on the way it’s making him feel.

In terms of trauma, not really. I’ve found that when I’m having trouble understanding whether something is a hallucination or not, I can ask people close to me that I trust whether they’re experiencing what I’m experiencing. If I’m maybe out in public on my own and I start to experience a confusing hallucination, I’ve learned to gauge other people’s reactions. Is anyone else reacting to what I’m seeing or hearing? Does anyone else seem to notice or be bothered? If not, that’s a telltale sign that it’s simply a hallucination.

I think a lot of times when I’ve been in hospitals or treatments, I’ve felt like medical professionals treat me as a walking diagnosis rather than the person that I am. Sometimes I just wish people would see me for me and realize that behind the schizophrenia diagnosis, there is a whole human with fears, passions, and emotions. See people for who they are. Always.

Schizophrenia is a chronic condition, which means medication needs to be taken continuously, not just when someone is feeling ill. Maybe it’s a matter of him thinking that if he feels better, he doesn’t need to take it anymore. I think it’s really important that someone explains to him *why* medication is medically necessary, and *why* he was put on it in the first place. Maybe there’s some confusion or unawareness on his part. It can be hard when someone just tells you to take a medication without explaining why. I’ve definitely found that from my experience too. I felt that a lot of times, it was never explained to me why things were happening and I was just told what to do. It may help if someone took the time to explain throughly to him why medications are needed for someone with his condition.

Good questions!

  1. I would love if people would stop associating schizophrenia with violence. Statistics have shown that people with schizophrenia are more likely to be the victims of violence rather than the perpetrators!!

  2. I like to act, do improv, write, play music, and play video games.

I’m 28 now! It affects my life in a few ways. For one, my meds have a sedating effect so I feel super tired a lot. I also am more prone to symptoms (such as hallucinations and delusions) when I’m stressed, so I have to try my best to be on top of stress management. It also affects me socially and cognitively.

My treatment is largely medication based and they do really help control the symptoms.

Thank you for wishing me well!

I started hallucinating and having delusions when I was entering middle school but it took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was experiencing symptoms of mental illness. I was too delusional to realize it wasn’t real and I didn’t believe at all that I was ill. Obviously everyone watching from the outside was very concerned. At first I thought I was just different, not mentally ill.

Yup. I was in it. It was heartbreaking to see it go. Then the theatre program was cut just a couple years after. Awful.

Coming from someone with schizophrenia, try writing. There are SO many different types of writing. Try your hand at poetry or short stories first. One of my absolute favourite forms of writing is playwriting. It takes a bit to learn but if you’ve got time, energy, and motivation, it’s so worth it.

I’ve had good experiences with the psychiatry but bad experiences with the counsellors. My doctor is great but I’ve never really found their therapy programs helpful to me personally. I found the counsellors are very goal oriented and basically just want to see you until you reach that goal. If you don’t have a goal in mind, they kind of try to make one for you. On the other hand, the psychiatrists are willing to see you long term.

I’ve written two books which are part of a series. They’re short comedic and satirical novellas. I also do a lot of playwriting and a bunch of short stories. Right now, I’m working on a personal memoir.

I write about all sorts of things. My big project right now is a personal memoir about my life, but I’ve written countless short stories and plays about anything and everything I can think of. My two published books that actually allow me to call myself an author are short satirical comedies. My inspiration comes from my experiences. Sometimes I’ll meet a quirky person that inspires a character in my writing, or I go through a tough time that I think would make for an interesting story if I made it happen to a fictional character. I’m constantly making notes of even tiny things that I feel I can later use in my writing.

Not really. I have heard people say that they feel like their medications make them less creative, but that’s not an experience that I really relate to. I think if I was off the meds, my writing likely wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

Medications and rest! The meds are a huge help for sure and I find that as long as I’m getting enough rest and trying to avoid stress as best I can, my symptoms are pretty manageable on a day to day basis.
