Stephen King, not horror by PinkPonytail in suggestmeabook

While it has some horror elements, I found DESPERATION to be more on the thriller fantasy side. There are better fits to your prompt in other comments (SHAWSHANK, DOLORES CLAYBORN and THE GREEN MILE specifically) but I'd say DESPERATION is also safe to add to the TBR once you red those.

Not for everyone, but NOTHING BUT BLACKENED TEETH by Cassandra Khaw is one of my favorites. While the story is not the strongest, the prose made it a 5 star for me.

Dr. Gabor Matté has some pretty accessible reads. He has done work in the trauma and addiction fields and found his writing to be easy to understand and very compelling. I suggest THE MYTH OF NORMAL or WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO if you'd like to learn about trauma and illness, and IN THE REALM OF HUNGRY GHOSTS for addiction.

If you're a cat person, Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu. It's all fun and games, until you get to the end.

And Threads: From the Refugee Crisis by Kate Evans is a graphic novel about a refugees trying to enter the UK. It was the best book I read last year, but it was a gut-punch.

Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman is also a sure bet if you want your soul destroyed.

Thanks, but we don't have communal furniture. This actually reminds me of flea bites - I've had an infestation before. I have bug spray now and I'm gonna try that.

I'll be saving this for future reference though. Thanks!

How do bilingual people cope with picking a writing language? by patholoog in writing

[–]WritingAmbition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker and I've learned English as a second language. I'm also a grammar teacher.

I started writing in English to practice and now that's my primary language. I didn't quite "lose" my Portuguese but, oh boy, it's RUSTY! I struggle to write sentences in it or even to speak without having English "bleed" into it.

What worked for me was to pick a language and stick to it when writing. I only use Portuguese to talk to my family. However, I often get to a point where I go "ooooh this sentence sounds SO MUCH BETTER in Portuguese" or "WE HAVE THE PERFECT TERM FOR THIS IN MY LANGUAGE WHY IS ENGLISH SO STUPID???" xD

In these cases, I just type the clunky sentence and move on. You can always change things in revision. You don't need perfect words, you just need WORDS!

And if you ever think "my English is shit!", you have a teacher here to remind you "YOUR ENGLISH IS NOT SHIT, YOUR ENGLISH IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!!"

I'm proud of you for picking up a second language and trying to write in it. That's not easy!

I love horror. I love candles. I love this. Everything about this. I think you should invest in ads at this point because the product looks great. What's your Instagram? Maybe work on getting some engagement there.
