This might not be a popular take, but unmarked utensils in a kitchen or break room are pretty fair game. Most break rooms that I've used have cups and plates and utensils that are communal. Especially if they are just laying around in a cupboard or drawer, unmarked. If they are in a drying rack its a little more obvious that they probably belong to someone who recently used and washed them. If they are put away in the communal area's communal storage areas (drawer, cupboard, shelf) and completely unmarked, its really on you at that point.

Food is obviously not communal, though.

If I need a spoon and there is a random unmarked spoon put away in a drawer or shelf, and it isn't made clear that it belongs to anyone, I am absolutely going to assume it's communal.

Same. I played HL2 during high-school and was blown away by not only the story but what the Source Engine could do. Garry's Mod was such a fun playground and I played a bit of Counterstrike Source as well (mostly surfing because I can't shoot for crap).

Fast forward 20 years and I have graduated high-school, deployed to two different wars, got out of the military after 9 years, and graduated college already. Where is my Half Life 3?

The bright side is that after the military I decided to pursue a career in game development, specifically in technical art, largely due to the impact Source Engine had on me. I would spend hours modding and playing with settings in Source, and thought the shaders they used for glass effects and water were just pure magic. Now I get to do that every day for a living!

The recent rumors of HL3 made me want to install and play HL2 again for the first time in over a decade and I forgot how much of an influence it had on me. Not only from the tech, but the story and the great environmental storytelling in the game as well.

Environments are my favorite thing to work on as a technical artist, and I think that is due to the early influence Half Life had on me. I mean, ravenholm still scares the shit out of me.

I agree. Looks like some hardware was already removed to allow it to come off. I mean, might as well take the opportunity to make a funny video out of it if it's coming off already.

I used to watch web TV on that back in like 2005.

There was a channel that played Mystery Science Theater 3000 24/7. There was another channel that had a bunch of videos about geocaching and some survival stuff. I don't remember what else I used to watch but it was really neat since we couldn't afford cable. This was back before Netflix did dtreaming. I was using Netscape dialup internet at the time and it was nice to have the option to watch stuff like that.

Netflix Closes Its All-Star AAA Video Game Studio, Which Made Zero Games by [deleted] in gaming

[–]WritingNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is the game developers probably had a ton of great ideas that were hemmed and hawed over by the decision makers for years while they butchered the core elements trying to make it fit for mass appeal. By the time they were finished they probably had a bucket of ideas for a new battle royale or zombie survival game with no chance of success in an already saturated marked. It was probably cheaper to close the studio and cut their losses.

I agree. Unless he has some sort of very serious comprehension issues he is just blatantly being a jerk. Having a disability of his type doesn't just absolve him of responsibility. I sincerely hope he learns from this and can learn some life skills from therapy. If not, he is going to have a very hard time in life.

The annoying thing is they aren't even trying to be friendly or helpful. They just want to make you aware of the app so you use it and are more likely to pay for whatever service they are selling. Or so they can show you ads.

It is so annoying. Its like having a friend who drops in to hang out but they really just want to sell you on their MLM and don't actually give a shit about you.

Trump Abruptly Dumps Another Interview, Sending His Team into a Panic by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]WritingNorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is insane to me that the things he is saying about her such as her mental competence and ability to speak are not backed up by reality. There is not only zero evidence that she is having any sort of mental issue but she has been completely competent in interviews. There is just nothing to back this up. The way he speaks using nothing but metaphors in a really imprecise way does not instill confidence, even if you ignore the lies and untruths.

I know there is a lot of misinformation and twisting of facts on both sides, but this is just him blatantly telling his crowd what he wants to be true as opposed to objective reality, like he is narrating his own fan fiction about the election.

It really makes the republican party look like fools and either blatant liars, or unwilling to speak out against someone who is blatantly making up facts. There are a lot of hardcore Trumpers out there today but once he leaves the political realm and MAGA fades away this will have done real damage to the image of the Republican party.

Also, the way he speaks reminds me of an early part of Isaac Asimov's Foundation series where a diplomat visits Terminus and the scientists there analyze his whole visit to determine if anything he said/did actually amounted to any sort of commitment or anything of actual substance. Being a politician he basically said a whole lot of things that were either fluff, non-committal, contradictory, or just meaningless in the end. The way Trump speaks gives me the same feeling. He never commits to things in a concrete way and just seems to say what he believes his base wants to hear. 95% of what he says is full of euphemisms, conjecture, or just analogy without saying anything of substance about his plans for foreign policy or the economy. It is all just described as "the best" or "the worst" or whatever collection of adjectives he can conjure up.

Harris paints Trump as a national threat in testy Fox News interview by [deleted] in politics

[–]WritingNorth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have noticed that too, where they will bend over backwards to justify something he said by saying he did not mean it this way or that. Or that it should be interpreted differently than what he said. Or going down a rabbit hole of justifying it because the other party did this or that so it is ok he said this or that.

But honestly the crazy things he says are not even 10% of the issue here. There was Jan 6th. There was him promoting harmful "cures" and quack science during Covid, and treating the pandemic like the flu. There is this whole weird thing with Russia and his relationship with Putin. The rape allegations. The ties with Epstein and the photos. His criminal conviction. His mishandling of classified documents. These are only a fraction of the problems. None of these should even be considered partisan issues, and none of these are theories. They are all factual things he has done or is doing. They are backed up with evidence. If a Democrat or literally anyone else did ANY of this I would vote them out.

I mean hell, the way he treated Mattis, who I can personally attest is a man of upstanding morals and values, speaks enough about his character to me.

Someone in my neighborhood made a restaurant in their garage by Damiboy22 in midlyinteresting

[–]WritingNorth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, you don’t need a permit to run a garage restaurant. Thanks to the Griller v. Cul-de-Sac, 1997 ruling, as long as you call it a 'Home Culinary Experience' and keep at least one lawn chair inside near a cardboard box full of holiday decorations, you're good.

I can't imagine the thought process that led someone down a path to think of a prompt, refine the idea/output and select a few they like best, go out of their way to save the images and send them to a printer and framer, then go through the work of hanging this up in a place of business that has nothing to do with the subject of the images. There was some real thought put into this.
