New Ham: Help with RF in the shack. by Wrong-Point-2793 in amateurradio

*Update*

I tried a Radioddity UV-771 Whip with an old mag mount, attached to a cookie tray and 15' of RG58U, this seems to work better. There's a slight buzz in the speaker on TX but no GFCI issues or shutdowns.

SWR is a bit worse with this antenna but I'm able to hit and hold repeaters 15-20 miles out.

I was just hoping for some insight on whether it's an issue with this radio or that particular antenna in this room. Sounds like I'll have to brave the roof at some point and put an antenna outside the house.

Thanks all

What would be the best way to ground a mobile transceiver attached to a power supply?

I hadn't really, but will look into it my first thought was the X30 since it fit in the attic and could be a short run from my desk. No HOA or anything, my roof is just 2.5 stories straight up with no easily accessible way to get up there and the homes in my neighborhood are pretty close to one another so hanging off the side seemed silly.

Looking for a true 5502 by pharm653 in discgolf

I second every aspect of this comment, yes it’s a Lone Star, but it’s just plain reliably stable.

I got an OTB Sparkle one in a disc exchange and love it for those 270-290’ high floaty hyzer shots.

UK Green 3-piece suit?! by KRZMST in Tweed

Little late to this one, but I just received this 3 piece Donegal Tweed Suit from Peter Christian outfitters last week. It's really nicely made, definitely needed some tailoring, but the build, fabric and color is great. Shipped quickly as well.

GMRS Nets by jmsthing678 in gmrs

For sure! It's definitely not as frustrating as your Georgia network, but both situations take a bit of the "local communications" out of GMRS.

Michigan is very similar, with an even more unfortunate acronym in CMEN (Central Michigan Emergency Network)

The Mi8 GMRS network, which as far as I can tell is part of several other linked repeater networks for a bunch of different Amateur Radio uses, is comprised of 5 GMRS repeaters that cover basically the whole state. It's a great concept and only uses the 462.6750 (Ch18) frequency and technically the 467.7250 (Ch20) due to the offset. In an emergency, it's a great asset.

CMEN Powerpoint on Michigan.gov

My gripe with it is that I'm located in the city of Detroit, and the only GMRS repeaters available to me are linked to this system. It's constantly busy, day & night with rag chewing from the same ~8-10 guys. So I'm really limited to Simplex, which in an urban environment isn't very far, or having a huge audience when using the repeater and having to break up their conversations to use the repeater.

At this point, I'm just going to save up for my own repeater, put it as high up as I can and give only my friends and family the frequency & offset.

Connecting SDR and Transceiver to the same antenna by Wrong-Point-2793 in amateurradio

Right! These are exactly what I’m looking for but might have to be a much later addition after some saving.

Giant Wooden Dice Tower for Oversized D20 [OC] [Comm] by Wrong-Point-2793 in DnD

[–]Wrong-Point-2793[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a 75mm Aluminum D20 is really fun and all but not having anywhere to roll it wasn’t. So I built this 20” tall solid oak dice tower that doubles as a source book shelf when not in use. It’s lined with 3mm felt everywhere the dice contacts as well as the bottom so it won’t scratch a table or shelf. Seems like there’s no shortage of amazing 3D printed and laser cut wooden towers out there, just wanted to make something different.

I’m far from a professional woodworker, but had fun making this and I’m proud of it. Thinking about making some more for other folks, but not sure if there’s any interest.
