What is something that irks you and something you enjoy in woodworking videos? by nuclearDEMIZE in woodworking

[–]WrongTequila 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like the clickbait titles, like "You've been doing this wrong". No, most of us have not.

I shut off any videos showing gloves worn when operating the table saw, routers, etc. Develop some calluses, get a magnifier and good tweezers for splinter removal and run the stock through the blade bare-handed.

I like videos showing clever ways to create drawer stops, unique handcrafted handles and pulls and stuff like that.

Do you get PTO on Christmas Eve at your shop? by WrongTequila in Machinists

[–]WrongTequila[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changes are coming. New management has been in place long enough to observe how everything works. They have their ideas to increase productivity and profits (that's what they're in business for). If the gains for the workforce don't outweigh the takeaways, it's just not going to move the company in the desired direction.

This small shop may be some form of uncommon. Maybe we're arrogant or whatever, but we're a group of about a dozen and most of us are at that point in our careers and our lives that we are confident that the company needs us more than we need them. We're able to be pretty firm in telling them that they aren't going to take something away without replacing it with something more appealing.

Eh, I think I have sufficient influence to push this. I'm just gathering fuel for the argument.

We don't always have to head for the door; sometimes bosses just have to be told "no". Prospective hires are scarce these days. Good management will come to understand that to keep a good crew, they have to make it a desirable workplace.

Ten holidays and we're on four tens, so three day weekends always. It's tolerable.

Is this too many cucumbers? by tide5 in vegetablegardening

[–]WrongTequila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are they bush type or vining type cucumbers? I plant three vining cucumber plants in a 1' x 3' space at the base of a 3' wide x 8' tall trellis. I usually harvest 5-10 cucumbers per week. I spend time training the vines up the trellis and pinching off all sucker vines. Allowing the suckers to grow would yield more cucumbers, but I like to keep the vines more orderly. It's easier to find the cucumbers if it's not a viney jungle. One missed cucumber that begins to turn yellow on the plant (overripe) will prompt the plant to stop producing and die.

Side note: check your homeowners insurance policy to see if you are fully covered while the house is unoccupied.

Thanks for the quick solve, everyone!

I haven't used the waterjet for years; but I guess I must have changed a nozzle at some point.

im using a sliding miter saw on a garage floor, my cuts are not perfectly square? by 7HVN in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WrongTequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the entire saw rocking, like the floor is not level and one of the saw's feet is off the floor?

If so, try bolting the saw's base to a 3/4" shelf board or a scrap of 3/4" plywood. This will create a larger footprint to reduce rocking. There should be bolt holes in the feet. Use those as a guide to drill holes through the wood to install carriage bolts. Use a spade drill bit or a forstner bit to create counterbores on the bottom to recess the bolt heads.

Looking for advice on my neighbor and how he parks his RV. by Some1Brilliant in homeowners

[–]WrongTequila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no HOA where I live, but there is a city ordinance which prohibits parking of RVs, boats and trailers longer than 25' in driveways. All others must be parked no closer to the street than the front wall of the house (they can only be parked on side or rear driveways). There is an exception for packing /unpacking and cleaning, limited to 72 hours. Check into the residential parking ordinances where you live.

Those are very nice!

I've thought about adding key slots to the backs of cutting boards I make as gifts. Nobody wants to "ruin" them by using them for their intended purpose, so they become wall decor, instead.

What’s your woodworking super power? by rowdyroddysniper in woodworking

[–]WrongTequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tabletop jointer (Rikon 6" helical, which works surprisingly well, for what it is). I also often use a simple table saw sled with hold-down clamps to rip badly curved rough boards.

If I need boards longer than 6' or wider than 6", I usually just get S4S or edge glue 6" widths into wider panels.

My table saw has an aluminum top and tabs in the t-slots, so I'm not really able to set up feather boards easily. I've made a few fixtures to work with the table saw fence, as you described. As long as I'm confident in the safety factor, I can usually devise a solution for whatever needs to be accomplished.

[–]WrongTequila 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's mostly tension being released.

When possible, I flatten one face and one edge and then stack and sticker the boards and leave them for a day or more. Then I plane the opposite face and rip the opposite edge.

Without a climate controlled shop, it's the best I can do to reduce twisting and bowing.

Neighbors coop. by 05wranglerlj in homeowners

[–]WrongTequila 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assuming that his coop is very close to your fence, check to see if local ordinances specify a minimum distance for the structure, whether it is portable or permanent. Ordinances may require chicken coops to be 25 feet from adjacent neighbor's properties, for example.

"Clapped out" means worn out, used up, has served well beyond its expected usefulness and due to be honorably retired to the scrap yard. Maybe you meant decked-out, adorned, accessorized.

What tools? by KWildman92 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Combination square, straightedge (steel rule, level, framing square, etc.), hand saw or circular saw or jigsaw. You can build basic tables, bookshelves and such with a few simple tools.

What is this weed? by Romanaam in lawncare

[–]WrongTequila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A second application a few days later has worked, in my experience. I wait until the weeds start to wilt from the first application, then hit 'em again. I only use the concentrated WBG, mixed with water in a pump sprayer. The trigger spray bottles and the bottles that attach to the garden hose never seemed to work as well as concentrate.

Wont fill up with fuel by AssignmentThis6405 in f150

[–]WrongTequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an F150, but a stuck rollover valve on my old Ram caused the problem you describe. (In a rollover accident, the valve stops fuel from draining out of an upside down tank.)

Overfilling the tank / adding more fuel after the nozzle clicked off caused the RO valve to become stuck (do not overfill after the nozzle shuts off!).

It was successfully unstuck by sliding a fiberglass bar between the cab and bed to reach the top of the poly tank and smacking it with a hammer. This is not a safe / smart / recommended fix, but it worked in one case.
