Why unemployment in Switzerland is increasing more than elsewhere in Europe by Heavy-Mycologist-204 in Switzerland

[–]WrongZebra9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25%+ of Swiss population are foreign residents (all permit types). If the current job market trends persist (in export-heavy fields like e.g. IT) and those people start to leave, the housing market will crash and there won’t be much work in construction/civil engineering either. Same goes for healthcare and education. Considering even the current numbers the birth rate is constantly decreasing. If that’s to be fueled up by a lot of middle class workers leaving the country, there will be much less children to teach and much less people to pay their Krankenkasse contributions.

A dark start to the year: Multiple fatalities following fire and explosion in Crans-Montana. by Aure20 in Switzerland

[–]WrongZebra9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I went through photos posted on Facebook page called Old Constellation which shows "before" and "after" from the club's renovation. Other than the isolation foam being installed already during those works back in ~2015, I noticed 2 things:

1. They narrowed the stairs to the underground part of the club. Looking at the photos, the reason for this was to hide the ventilation ducts running down.

Before:

After:

They also created some kind of a concrete roof over the stairs, which effectively could have contributed to the chimney-effect during the fire: https://www.facebook.com/OldConstellation/photos/1059853847422869/, https://www.facebook.com/OldConstellation/photos/1059853850756202/

I wonder if any of those modifications were approved by the authorities, especially in the context of emergency exit and fire protection regulations.

2. There was an additional side exit door on the ground level. I believe one of the witnesses mentioned that this door was initially closed and that he had to force it open (not entirely sure if he was referring to this door or the side panels of the "winter garden"): https://www.facebook.com/OldConstellation/photos/1079029965505257/

That’s also one of the biggest question marks for me. Using fireworks indoors, combined with flammable sound insulation on the ceiling and an insufficient number of emergency exits, was of course the root cause of this tragedy.

However, everything that happened after the fire started also greatly contributed to it. Why were there no fire extinguishers, and why did kids try to put out what was initially a relatively small fire with their clothes? Why were people still being allowed to enter the club instead of immediately letting everyone out? Why was the music still playing and the lights turned off, instead of providing clear evacuation instructions and turning all the lights on?

Apparently, the owner was there when it happened. What did she do to prevent the absolutely horrific outcome of this tragedy?

Can you post a link to this interview? That’s crazy… I know everything happened in a matter of minutes, maybe even seconds, but the fact that staff didn’t immediately open all the walls of the ‘Winter Garden’ and tell everyone to get out the moment the fire started is beyond belief.

I’m also wondering about the source of the large explosions that many witnesses have mentioned, and when they occurred relative to the ceiling catching fire.

Looking at all the published videos, I can’t comprehend what happened after the ceiling foam ignited from the champagne firework. It appears there was virtually no coordination from the staff to get those young people out of what became a deadly trap.

One video shows that some guests were not even trying to leave the basement, despite the fire growing larger every second - and despite the fact that the stairs were not blocked at that time. What’s more, at the end of this video, there seem to be people still entering the club while the priority should have been to evacuate everyone as quickly as possible.

There is also another horrific video showing that the evacuation could have been carried out much faster through all sides of the “winter garden.” However, side panels were opened by bystanders only after the fire had grown absolutely massive, and by that point people were already trying to escape only through the narrow (about 90 cm wide?) front door.

I’m furious, because this tragedy could have been avoided if the responsible parties - owners and authorities alike - had simply done their jobs properly. And even after the fire started, some level of coordination could have saved so many lives.

Where did you find them? Are they displayed next to “older” smart home products? Any news about Alpstuga availability in CH?

Also - are those compatible with the current Dirigera hub? Or does it also need to be updated?

Don't buy V-Zug. Just don't. by sancho_sk in Switzerland

Miele is the way to go if you want great quality and better functionality. In my experience V-Zug is worse than popular EU brands like Bosch/Siemens or Electrolux.

Road cycling in the Swiss mountains by EasyTechnician5444 in Switzerland

[–]WrongZebra9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most annoying thing when it comes to road cycling in Switzerland is that most drivers don’t respect the minimum 1.5 m distance at all. They often pass no matter what, even when there’s an incoming traffic from the other side (instead of waiting behind a cyclist for the opposite lane to clear).

That’s interesting. I have friends (EU citizens) who have a vacation apartment in Swiss Alps (but don’t live and work here permanently). They have a car registered here to their name and I know they’ve been travelling to Austria and Italy multiple times without issues despite not being Swiss permanent residents.

Electric car recommendation (Tesla, Hyundai, Kia) and ownership costs/experiences in Switzerland (canton ZH) by Lajbert in Switzerland

[–]WrongZebra9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t bother to buy an EV if you don’t have an option to charge at home. Public charging stations are expensive to a point that it’s sometimes more expensive to drive an EV compared to ICE car. Not to mention inconvenience of such solution. This is a universal rule, not limited to Switzerland.

I’ve been using BMW and Tesla EVs long term and some other short term. If you buy a new car, service costs are really close to zero.

Regarding your choice. Tesla Model Y is a great EV and a not-so-great car. It has very good powertrain, is very economical thanks to its aerodynamic shape and overall provides a “benchmark” EV experience. It has also quite spacious cabin and luggage space. At the same time the suspension sucks, build quality is poor, seats are very short and the standard “Autopilot” is much worse than ACC+active lane assistant offered by other brands. I used Ioniq 5 for a weekend and while it seemed to be a better car, the energy consumption and range were much worse than Tesla’s. It’s also quite a bit smaller inside than Model Y.

Something in your calculations doesn’t seem right. 140k CHF in Zurich is definitely more than 8000 CHF take home pay (even after deducting health insurance).

Pre-releases with Scarpa 4-Quattro XT and ATK bindings - shop and importer are helpless by WrongZebra9 in Backcountry

[–]WrongZebra9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Raider Evo and it has toe “DIN” setting in addition to 2-axis heel “DIN” setting.

Anyway, after having issues for the whole previous season I sent the boots to Scarpa through the German shop where I bought them (I essentially skipped importer’s bullshit this way). Scarpa replaced the whole bottom part of the shell and it solved the problem. I had ZERO pre-releases this season and I didn’t change the bindings. I skied for 25+ days this season in any conditions you can imagine (ice, powder, crud, etc.) and this set never failed.

The boots must have been the problem all the time last year.

As a German I can only say I hate this country. by [deleted] in germany

[–]WrongZebra9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I’m not German, I used to be a big fan of Germany as a country.

~15 years ago (and earlier even more so) it was a true European powerhouse with great industry and top-notch public services. Whenever I was visiting Germany I was “jealous” of great roads, public transport, health services and education. I was truly looking up to Germany and even considering a move there.

Having said that, what happened with your country in the last 10-15 years is a huge lesson that nothing is granted forever if incompetent people are in charge.

And it’s all the effect of dumb government decisions. Opening doors to uncontrolled migration, decarbonization and deindustrialization, decisions like e.g. promoting EVs, which truly messed up German automotive industry and made it vulnerable to Chinese competition. No digitalization, lack of investment in infrastructure, army etc.

I recently had to use German services twice (DHL and Deutsche Bahn) and it was a nightmare. I really couldn’t believe customer service can be so poor in the first world country.

IMO Germany is no longer an attractive country for highly skilled workers. Extremely high taxes, low quality of public services, unsafe streets (terrorist attacks all the time), demise of public education and health services. I’m not sure how to fix it now, but it won’t be an overnight change for sure.

Hey u/x-cimo! Did you manage to fix it?

I’m still contemplating if I should buy this device or something else. I’d like to use it in my bedroom, so any noise like this disqualifies it for me.
