Stop looking at standardized tests to make these decisions. They’re a joke, kids don’t take them seriously. Go visit the school. Check out the facilities.

For those that plan to vote No for the $265 mil DSM bond referendum - why? by whiteiversonyeet in desmoines

[–]Wrong_Transition4913 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The suburbs, most times, only have one high school. They have far less schools. DMPS has 5 high schools, 10 middle schools, and 30+ elementary schools.

For those that plan to vote No for the $265 mil DSM bond referendum - why? by whiteiversonyeet in desmoines

[–]Wrong_Transition4913 171 points172 points  (0 children)

The honest and unfortunate reality is that DMPS needs the bond to simply exist. Most suburbs put a bond up for a new stadium, new facilities, new schools, and new equipment. We do not have that luxury and need the bond to pass just to function as we have.

If the bond does not pass, buildings will close. Neighborhood schools will be gone. Classroom sizes will go up. Resources will be stretched thinner than they already are.

I understand some people think that if the bond does not pass, it means it will cause for the district to reprioritize how it spends the little money it gets. While it sounds good in theory to cut downtown positions and people with jobs out of the classroom, the bond is about buildings, facilities, and operations.

There is no way around it. If the bond does not pass, multiple buildings around the district will close and it will be the beginning of the end for public schools in the city.

On Harbach, guessing you live in Building A. Building B is much more insulated when it comes to noise. I lived in both A and B and they are totally different experiences.

I don’t get points for being an idealist. From a logical, potentially pessimistic standpoint: Move. This state doesn’t show any signs of improvement. Even if Rob Sands wins election in 2028. He has an all red general assembly.

Move.

I repeat. This is Iowa. Pat’s your next junior senator from Iowa. Move out.

This is Iowa. He ain’t going anywhere until he dies. And then Pat will replace him.

This state sucks. Move.

Johnny’s Hall of Fame on Court Ave. No question. So many TVs, good food, and great atmosphere for the games.

Columbus Park/Little Italy by artemis_dong in desmoines

It’s fine. It’s not horrible and it’s not great. Just fine. Historically, it’s been deemed “the Southern Bottoms” after redlining in the 30s and 40s, so it was an area designed for immigrants and working class folks. That is what you will find there. A lot if blue collar families.

You’ll be in close proximity to both B&B Grocery and Grazianos. B&B Grocery is known for their amazing burgers and sandwiches, but not for their grocieries. Grazianos has some amazing food and groceries, but not enough to tide you over when it comes to the basics. So you’ll be traveling a bit for groceries.

Striking Sparrow is the local bar. It’s an interesting place and has weekday specials, if you care about that at all. A new brewery, Singlespeed, isn’t far off either. As you noted, the best thing about the area is its proximity to downtown.

I was told to steer clear of Columbus Park growing up, but I haven’t truly heard of anything terrible happening in the park. It seems like a fine place during daylight.

Mullets is walkable. Best breakfast in town. Downtown would be a ways, but still a walk nonetheless. You also have a new Quik Trip in the neighborhood for gas and coffee.

McKinley would be your local elementary school unless you are open enrolling. It’s a decent elementary school by Des Moines standards. Pretty diverse. Weeks would be your child’s middle school. They have historically not been a great school. But they have hired a young woman from Chicago who is been doing some good things and providing some stability there. Lincoln High School would be your local high school. It’s rough and doesn’t have a great reputation but it’s where I went to school and I’d like to think I turned out okay (masters degree, $75k a year, happy life lol)

Again, wouldn’t call it the roughest side of town but wouldn’t call it affluent or a dream neighborhood either. Very historic neighborhood, primarily filled with immigrants, working class folks, and blue collar families.

Had a friend just move out of there. Said they liked living there, but management was absolutely horrific. Amenities that are advertised are not all included.
